Evading monsters and the Sedanette

By nachti, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I've played Arkham Horror for a while now, and I think I'm playing the game pretty well. However, today we stumbled over a few things, we weren't quite sure about. The game was strange ... er.

1. Can an investigator who has the Sedanette (card text: "You may automatically Evade monsters of toughness 1 while in street areas.") autmatically attack evading monsters with one toughness in street areas? We played with Tulzscha and I was happy I found a nice (if not broken) way to use the Sedanette was to kill those annoying, seal-removing cultists, though I had the Disguise skill (I'm sure it works on this one). Tulzscha's cultists didn't stand a chance.

2. When calculating the game score (done that for the first time because we started to contribute to the statistics thread), do monster and gate trophies count if the investigator was devoured during the final battle?

3. Regarding gate bursts: the DH rules state "However, a doom token is not placed on the Ancient One's doom track when a seal is burst open by a gate burst. Also this does not cause a monster surge." Why would someone think there could be a monster surge when an Elder Sign is removed from the board?

Thanks in advance!

1. Can an investigator with the Sedanette automatically pass the Evade check to enter combat with an Elusive monster that has toughness of 1? Yep. This is yet another game component that puts Tulzscha to shame.

2. I never knew the answer to this one. It doesn't say in the rules that the trophies are discarded, but I assume they are.

3. Just covering their bases I guess.

Maybe the trophies are lying around after an investigator's demise for others to loot? demonio.gif

Yes, but when an investigator is devoured during final combat, he is not replaced like in normal gameplay. When adding up the scores for a victory, you get "1 point for each surviving, sane investigator." The only time you don't get points for an investigator, in other words, is when he is devoured during final combat. Trophies probably follow right along with the investigator.

I'm no authority on the matter, but I definitely discard them.

2. Yeah, I always wondered about that too. I keep them, because it doesn't say anything about losing the trophies. *shrugs* I dunno, first off it rarely comes up. Secondly, if it does it's likely to make only 2-3 points difference anyway. Third: if you're having investigators devourered in final combat, you probably didn't make a score worth writing home about. Fourth: Score is laregly a matter of personal satisfaction anyway, with absolutely no game effect. So, IMO, as long as you calculate it the same way every time, calculate it whatever way that makes you happy.

What caused me to wonder if the trophies of devoured investigators really don't count was a situation where my main monster hunter was devoured due to a bad roll. He had accumulated ten monster trophies and two gate trophies. That's 5-6 points.

This was a pretty long game that went over 28 turns, so everyone had collected a lot of trophies that had not been traded for anything. They also had excellent equipment which enabled the remaining investigators to beat the AO quite comfortably. This was one of those games where I managed to seal three high-frequency gates early but because of a string of bad luck I always lost clue markers at a crucial point and could only close gates from then on. I did have five seals when a double doom card ended the game (which also caused the terror level to increase to 1).

Sure, the score doesn't really mean a lot but I'm still excited when I get an unusually high one. Especially, since the statistics page allows me to compare scores with other teams that faced the same AO in similar circumstances.

those were supposed to be rules of thumb, not blanket statements, sigh..

Anyway, so jhalen, how have you always done your scores? Chalk it up like you always do and you'll know if you attained an unusually high score or not.

Yeaaaah... A good house rule for Tulzscha is that his cultists can not be automatically evaded (this actually fixes a couple of other cards too).
