Attachments Question

By ventura72, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

Can you play Attachment Support Cards if you don't have a unit to attach it to?

Last night, my wife played a Choppa into the BZ, and then the next turn put a unit into the BZ and then attached Choppa. Was that a correct way to play it?

Hi! ;)

In order to play a Support/Attachment card, you have to choose a Unit to attach it to.

Just for Clarification, you can play support cards during capital phase and this is a support card. The card does say attach to a unit, but doesn't specify when, or as you play card to attach. What exactly is stopping someone from playing an Attachment Card and then attach a unit later?

There are no explicit rules tellin' we can/cannot do that, as you point out...

But from a logical prespective and analysis of game rules AND this statement:

Cards that are attached to another card
(most often Attachments are support cards) are sacrificed
(put into the discard pile) if the card they are
attached to leaves play for any reason.

...We obtain three things:

- An attachment has no reason to stay on the table without a Unit (or another valid target);

- By definition of the term, an Attachment requires something to be attached to;

- MOST IMPORTANT: when you play an attachment (and any other card) you have an indication: "Attach it to..." When you play a card, you have to follow the text.

It's like choosin' a target, choosin' a zone in which you're going to play the card, etc...

You CAN'T ignore that part of the text. If a card says: "Attach to..." you HAVE to do it.

Hope it made sense ;)

That does make sense.

I appreciate the clarification.

You're welcome. gui%C3%B1o.gif

If you've played Magic The Gathering, attachments in Warhammer Invasion work similarly to how artifacts (that were equipped to creatures) worked before Equipment and Equip keyword was introduced.

Actually there is a spot in the rules which allude to this, that when putting a card into play all costs, choices, and targets must be made prior to the card actually being played.

And there is a spot where the timing of this is specified. The statement "attach to a target unit in your Battlefield." does not have a bold trigger which means it is a Constant Effect. It must be resolved immediately on play. It is a statement telling you what you must do right now, the moment the card is played. Otherwise it would say " Action: attach to a target unit in your Battlefield." Which would let you attach it at your leisure during any opportunity for a player action.

Played again last night, and had to tell my wife the bad news. We are playing attachements the right way now, thanks for help.
