Battle Maps

By caradoc, in Battlelore

I'm not sure what FFG's attitude is towards the Troll and Country battle map DoW produced prior to selling the game, but if it is considering following this model and releasing some of these in the future I think it would be awesome to really stretch the game.

Maps that have adventure seeds and event locations (moving to a particular location at a particular time could trigger X event related to the adventure, etc).

Maps that have a glut of terrain: large castles (most of the board), villages/cities, large bodies of water, complex river systems/marshes, cavern systems, etc etc.

or a Terrain pack that can be used to do some of the above...

My opinions! :D

Cheers,

Giles.

I'd be surprised if they did those. DOW got hammered pretty good for putting the Troll expansion out that way. I personally hope they don't. I'd rather them stick to the packs like what is coming out shortly in the creature and dragon packs. And hopefully race expansions. Also if they (or someone) can get an editor back on line you can design a map and print it out.

Hi there,

an expansion made solely of full sized maps or beach strip for one edge or snow fields, you know, just general larger terrain features would be interesting, possibly tie it into a castle siege pack expansion? (though a single creature and double sided map ala troll, mmmm, not really but good for prezzie lists)

So with a rule booklet a few default castle designs and a veritable bucket load of other maps and terrain tiles I reckon that would get my gaming pound...

Or perhaps a terrain pack that has various elements. For example castle tiles that would comprise walls, corners, gates, etc so then you can layout a castle design however you want.

Of course if the choice was between one type of expansion and another I would go with bigger army packs (holding out for these!). But I think some really off the wall scenarios could make good use of that medium. If the scenarios were just epic sized normal style scenarios I would be disappointed, but some unique and interesting ones could be really fun. I'm not advocating that they abandon the larger expansions in favour of this style of map - just that creative maps could be cool!

Whether they could simply be available as convention bonuses, downloadable/printable maps, or in a pack with terrain tiles and multiple maps - whatever form, I think that medium could be used to explore some interesting ideas (a civil uprising in a city for example, or a raid on a forest town, an assault on an island fortress etc.).

I love the idea of a siege set, that would be great. I would also like to see a great terrain pack come out that allows for some creative and interesting map building (along the lines of above). Building tiles, castle walls (more of), open water, etc etc. The castle tiles would be good. Adventure sites could make for some interesting scenario points - especially tied to Heroes...

Any other thoughts?

Cheers,

Giles.

I've been doing some home brew siege rules (&maps) and there really are very few configurations that can be created and still allow attackers and defenders space to move, even on an epic board.

What about a broader perspective siege? A chain of small castles? Some just towers, others several towers linked by ramparts? Or a small fort in the middle of the board with a small garrison against a larger enemy force...

Well I've been working off a self imposed brief, 'the final climatic battle for a castle where the attackers know a reliving force is inbound'. I wanted to avoid the dull roll to see if walls are breached and the build up side of things.
Towers and ramparts I think would be more of a strategic game rather than take down of a castle type battle (plus see below for another reason).
A small fort in the middle can't really exist because the left and right sectors would no longer be used by the defender which makes card choice largely irrelevant.

One siege I am working on is a rectangular castle in the middle of an Epic board but on a standard board you have a close up of the castle so units in side the walls would have their own battle ignoring whats happening on th...........

Oops I appear to have thread jacked...

Back on topic I recon lots of extra terrain would make a good addition say between two race expansions to scratch the whats the next release itch whilst allowing peoplget used to the subtleties of the new race (heck if they throw in siege rules it would be the final element needed for a full on campaign rules set to come out after the next race:

Tork
Siege and terrain pack
2nd race which I can't recall
Campaign rules
3rd race
RPG?!!! / another critter pack / the remainder of lore & command cards DOW chose not to use in the base game
4th Race

there you are best part of 18 months / 2 years of releases (throw in a goblin and dwarf army pack bringing all current packs into one plus a few extras and I'm a happy shopper

Different zoned cards could apply to different castle positions - left flank = units on walls. middle = units in coutryard. right = units in towers, or outside the walls, or in reserve...

Die results could be altered too - certain results sapping supplies from the defenders who only have a finite amount.

Don't worry about thread hijacking! Sounds good.

I like your release schedule. Campaign rules are a logical step after the heroes expansion.

Seige rules would be neat, but not sure whether we'll see them... We are more likely to see a Lore/Command set come out, with some new types of Lore Cards and Guest Lore Masters to go with them.

Can't wait to see what races will be released! Should be exciting.

Cheers,

Giles.
