Fan-Created Content for 3e

By HorusZA, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Warhammer FRP has always had a very active community that provided a great deal of content (both crunch and fluff). This was particularly welcome during the diaspora when WFRP was in limbo.

The new edition relies on lots of shiny bits: cards, special dice, tokens, etc. which, to me, make it very difficult for anyone other than FFG to create content. Are we limited on creating house rules to aspects that are not "on the cards"? It has always been easy to add new careers, tweak the combat rules, introduce new spells and other crunchy stuff. Will the new configuration limit us in what we can do, or are we going to find ways of compensating (perhaps with FFG's help) by creating our own card-backs, character-sheet templates, etc.?

As an aside: I'm seeing something similar happening in D&D4e: Many people are relying on the (rather excellent) Character Builder whoch means if it's not in there, it doesn't make it into the campaign. There's been a thread over on rpg.net where 3pp publishers are lamenting this fact: it's become an entry-barrier to their products.

It's not going to be a problem. People create house rules for board games all the time without these sorts of concerns. You can change the wording of any rule by simply writing down your house-rule and sticking a post-it note in the appropriate place.

By all credible accounts, this is a roleplaying game through and through. That means it's not about the artwork on the game components or how they look on the table. You'll have to get creative when it comes to making changes, but there's absolutely nothing stopping you from changing things. If you want to make big changes, you might have to sacrifice some of the aesthetic value. If you want to make drastic changes to the wounds system, it might mean that you have to create a table and roll percentile rather than use a deck of cards, or get a stack of index cards and create your own custom decks.

Everything has a solution.

I think DagobahDave is quite right. However, I also wouldn't be surprised at all if we'll see a fan made "WFRP3 creation kit" akin to the Strange Aeons for Arkham Horror. I kind of like playing around with stuff like that so I look forward to it. :)

I don't honestly see this as a problem.

In this day and age, very professional results can be achieved with a desktop computer and a printer, including the cards and such necessary for WFRP3!

I don't see any obstacles whatsoever to fan-created content for WFRP3. I ran the demo.

  • Fillable PDF character sheet: Done. No doubt within a week there will be a fan-created one-sided character sheet that will elminate 99% of the unnecessary clutter in front of a player.
  • Fillable Green-Side action card: will be done
  • Fillable Red-Side action card: will be done
  • Elimination of the Fatigue and Stress counters on a character sheet and use pencil instead: will be done
  • Elimination of the career card as a seperate card and instead sockets and info put on character sheet: will be done
  • Elimination of talent cards and put on character sheet as a one-line entry with a check box: will be done
  • Elimination of the stance ring on the mini: done
  • Elimination of the puzzle for the stance position and use the character sheet checkboxes instead: will be done
  • Creation of Red/Green fan-spell cards: will be done
  • Creation of Talent cards for "socketing" will be done.
  • Creation of new Party types card: will be done
  • Elimination of the basic actions and be put on a single sheet of paper (or put into a sheet protector) instead of being loose elements: will be done
  • Monster stat block will be created for fan scenarios
  • Symbol or abbr. for dice types for fan scenarios: Done (see nezzir's post.)
  • more?

The loose things that will absolutely remain in my game will be the wound cards and action cards. Talent cards are close to being on the chopping block. If they weren't able to socket to the party sheet, I wouldn't bother at all.

In my campaign, I intend to completely eliminate those ridiculous chits except for players who really want to dink around with them (and there's always one! Chad, you know who you are! ;)

It seems like a stack, but it's simply mechanical stuff. All of that loose crap will be on our character sheets and tracked with a pencil instead. Long term campaigns won't do as well (IMHO) with all those loose, losable things.

It all sounds good Emirikol. I do think that Fatigue/Stress Tokens are the only real tokens worth while in the game because they come and go so quickly it would mean tons of erasing and marking that eventually, you'll burn a whole through the character sheet. My group hates chippies and find those to be useful (as well as fortune points). We do want a box though to mark down how much we had at the end of a session so when we pick it up again, we're good to go and can restart where we left off.

My suggestion for Basic Actions (like Basic Attack, etc) is to create a weapon card that has those effects listed on it). Weapons are the one place where every-game could use cards. Why? It would really help when players pick up weapons or steal weapons, you just chuck them a card, already written up without the need to open a manual. I don't know 3e skipped that idea, but instead of the basic attack cards, I'd rather have seen it just thrown on cards.

Talent cards are also useful because they can be attached to the party card, so its another place the card mechanic facilitates the system, rather than limits or confuses it. Just a suggestion, and by all means make a sheet that includes them, it is just easier for book-keeping with the cards themselves.

MAD NOD TO STRANGE EONS:

I know many people have overlooked this idea but Strange Eons is great and would be great for Warhammer. For those who don't know, it has a template for all the Arkham components that allows you to enter the text and info so they look exactly like an existing Arkham card, but you can edit them directly, then put them onto a Card Deck Template and print out a series of cards on a single sheet. It is simply amazing how well it works. It also has an authoring tool (which I've tried to figure out, but don't have the skills to do so), that allows you to create any type of new card you want or modify the program to run any other system rather than just Arkham Horror. Talisman created their own expansion using Strange Eons so I'm sure Warhammer could use the basic engine to make Warhammer components via the plug-in authoring kit.

All it would take is someone figuring out how to write the script for Warhammer cards with Strange Eons (it is some type of Java writing program) and let the program run its course. It's great and I'd love to see a Strange Eon: Warhammer ASAP. I wish I could, but I just don't have the a clue when it comes to programming at all (I've tried to make just basic alterations to Arkham cards, but failed miserably.). If anyone else has some programming skills they should take a look at the plug-in editing system and see if we can use Strange Eons for it. Okay, I'm begging you to. I'd be willing to help in anyway I can, but my skills are extremely limited. It is a fantastic program though and it would benefit the game 100%.

Scotch Magic tape (by 3M) works the best. There's endless writing and erasing then. That's how we used to do our D&D HP's in the grand olden days.
