Question Re: Full Throttle Talent

By LadySkywalker, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

I have an Ace (Pilot) player who wants to try and use the Talent "Full Throttle" more than once in order to keep boosting the (cumbersome) freighter's Speed. He claims that he can't see anywhere where it limits its use, and neither can I; however, I said that at the very least, cumulative uses would cause System Strain as the engines were pushed far beyond their limits.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

It's a toggle-type talent (Edit: a "buff" in video game parlance), as far as I'm aware. The ship is either "on" Full Throttle, or "off" Full Throttle, hence the round limit based on Cunning. If your player is attempting to use Full Throttle a second time while the first is still active, then nothing should happen. They need to wait until their next turn after the last round of Full Throttle in order to use it again, but if they do so, there is no ill effect.

So if it's just extended duration they want, they don't need to do anything immediately - they just use an action to Full Throttle again on the round the talent wears off. If they're trying to increase the Speed beyond the 1 point provided by the talent, then they're going to need Full Throttle (Supreme) (AoR, p. 148), as that is precisely what that talent does.

Okay, thanks! :-)

Not really something chisseled in stone, but...

A TIE-Fighter has a printed speed of "5", for example. When modifying the top speed of a vehicle, I'd say you always use this printed speed, so the basic Full Throttle talent couldn't increase this TIE's top speed above 6, to continue the example. This can easily become a RAW versus RAI rules debate.

If the player is really into the mechanical advantages of the rules (it doesn't say "printed top speed"; RAW), then I would counter with a likewise witty remark indicating technicality (Full Throttle doesn't say "the ship's top speed cumulatively increases by one..."; RAI). The fact that Full Throttle (Supreme) actually does allow a top speed of 2 greater than normal is actually a nice indication of RAI here, actually.

Also keep in mind the Full Throttle action doesn't actually increase the speed at which the ship is currently traveling, all it does is increase the maximum speed it CAN travel at.

So if your ship is currently Speed 0/3, using Full Throttle makes your speed 0/4. You can either then take a maneuver to accelerate, putting you at Speed 1/4, or suffer 4 System Strain to Punch It! and go directly to Speed 4/4. If you actually want to go anywhere in that same turn, you'll have to take 2 strain for an extra maneuver (and 2 System Strain for an extra starship maneuver) to take a Fly maneuver, which would get you to Short range of wherever you were (assuming you Punched It!).

These "Buff" Talents act without stacking, where further applications simply re-set the duration that they last for, not increase the effect.
