with the choice in tournaments as to which damage deck to use, what do you look for when deciding which one to use?
damage decks
Generally, lists of generics without upgrades like the old deck, and lists using named pilots and secondary weapons like the new one.
But for me it comes down to the fact that I only own one damage deck at the moment...
Cue endless argument about whether it's kosher and sportsmanlinke to choose your damage deck based on your list.
The new deck...always.
I just really like how much better designed the new deck is so I use that one
Only bad people use the old deck. FFG screwed up that ruling BADLY.
I only found out recently that the old deck is legal. I went to my first tourney and people started using it and specifically a ship got damage card with absolutely no effect. I was so annoyed because I was using the new deck which as far as I knew was what was suppose to be used because of the original post. considering the ships I was using I would o prefered the old deck.
how long do they intend to make people able to choose

For now there is not set end date to the current setup. Until they release tournament rules that say otherwise you get to pick. I agree with some of the posts above, they majorly dropped the ball on this one, given the entire point was to give all critical hits some teeth regardless of what you're flying.
People whined about being forced to buy a new Core set (which you can get for $20) when they didn't want the new ships. Though, the number of people going to tournaments that aren't buying the new set are pretty small. Still, enough whined that they reversed themselves. They will probably never go back on that, unfortunately.

There has been no indication of any intention to stop people choosing as yet.
Given that they're still selling the original core set it would be a bit of a suspect decision IMO. Having people able to buy into the game, show up to their first tournament and be told that the thing they bought yesterday isn't legal to play would be bad for the game.

I draw Structural Damage on a VCX100 or Decimator.
It didn't work.

Well thanks for being rude!
I thought April 1st was the drop dead date for using the new deck. Considering the date maybe it was a joke.

The date was Jan 1st, but too many people who had already bought the TFA core set cried their hearts out about how unfair life is, that FFG reversed their ruling.
To answer the question though, I exclusively play with the new deck. It is the re-balanced deck that FFG intended we all use when they released it back in September. I prefer to get the full experience out of my hobbies, and not game my way into potentially a win when I shouldn't have earned one. If I'm getting shot at enough that I'm drawing damage cards, I'm doing something wrong anyways!

While I'd agree with the idea that you should use the new damage deck if you're going to metagame you just look at the old deck and consider how bad drawing those cards would be and if they aren't devastating you use it. With the new deck a face-up card is going to have an added effect in most cases but with the old deck there are a lot more cards that some ships would just treat a face-up card as no worse than a face-down card.
it's a simple thing of them stopping to print the old deck and replace it with the new deck in the old core boxes they still sell. eventually all those sets with old decks will be sold out. they could also provide new damage decks for sale outside the core set.
As it currently stands according the rules put forth by FFG, either deck is allowed.
In general:
if you have generics without upgrades- old deck
If you have aces or secondary weapons- new deck
It currently stands as a strategy decision for which to bring
Other people with a "higher standard" would like to think it's a moral choice
I wasn't aware that they are different. Why on Earth would FFG do that?

Because the old damage deck has so many "critical" that actually do NOTHING special to a large number of ships that they are little more than face-down cards with some text on them. A primary example is Munitions Failure which ONLY affected a ship if it actually had a secondary weapon equipped. There are plenty of others that have insignificant effects when used on many ships.

The changeover will happen it is just going to be some time. I think if not at Regionals then at nationals and worlds they will be supplying the new damage deck to make it standard across the board. So for those that are going to Nationals and Regionals they might want to get the new set just to get practice in with the new cards.

If it really mattered, they could sell the deck individually.
Personally, I totally understand people not liking the idea of having to buy something that retails at $40 (even if it can be gotten cheaper, I've never seen it for $20) just for a small deck of cards. Not everyone likes TFA, and not everyone likes those new ships.
It would be a simple matter to package the new damage deck for a reasonable price, but they haven't. Until that happens, it's not "whining". You're talking about other peoples' real world money. X-Wing's Upgrade Card distribution is sketchy enough without forcing people to buy $40 duplicates of something they already own to get one item out of it.
If they already own the TFA core set, they already have the new deck. If they don't, they get the following:
Maneuver templates with s-loops and t-rolls printed on them
6 more dice
New asteroids
An extra range ruler
The new format RRG, which is pretty nice to have if there are rules questions
2 TIE/fo minis
1 T-70 mini
Pilot cards for the above ships, and I hear at least one of those T-70 pilots is pretty good...
New upgrade cards
The new damage deck
Now, you are entitled to your opinion as to whether that is worth $40 or not, but saying its a duplicate of something they have is BS. The only thing "duplicated" is some cardboard (and you don't NEED a new rule book if you have kept current on everything for 3 years).
Edited by FatherTurinMost of the time - new one.
Decimator? Loves old one.
Ghost not so much unless budget build.
High hull ships, without secondaries tend to like old deck more.
Gunnered PWTs like old one.
you can easily find it online at many retailers for $25.

They'll have to do something. Either upgrade the old Core Set with the new deck, the new rule book, the movement templates with the talon and segnor's markings...and maybe some other things I missed? Or maybe phase out the old core set completely and instead have it as a booster pack with the ships and cards? No I don't think that would be a popular choice. But it really feels like they have to do something about the outdatedness of the old set.

They have actually been on sale for as little as $18!!! I bought TWO, as I already had one for $25!

It's really the only decision FFG could have made. Forcing players to buy the new Core set wouldn't just be a matter of folks be disgruntled about needing to drop $30 to play again; that's also enabling FFG to obsolete any material component they want, and force players to buy new ones if they want to compete.
Oh, we revised the maneuver templates, here's a third Core set at $30.
Oh, we revised the damage deck again, as well as dials for these ships.
And you're probably sitting there frowning thinking "That's absurd, they'd never do that". Their decision to perform actions like that are based upon how they affect the bottom line ($$$), determined by customer/fan reception and sales. It's always and only about money in the end, and, if the company determines that it's a profitable course of action to purposefully obsolete material components of the game and force consumers to make purchases to stay current and compete, they can and will. But, this game is not Warhammer, and I do not want it to become Warhammer.
I don't hold FFG wholly responsible for being unable to predict how the course of X-Wing's development would pan out, so frankly, it seems they made the best decision they could have. If you want to require the new deck, it should be provided. I'm one of those folks that only just got into the game this past January, and bought the original Core set (largely due to disdain for the new movie/content, and love of the old X-Wing design). I don't have any compunction to purchase it. I would consider a separately packaged damage deck for a couple bucks, but as of now I don't feel the need. I participated in a tourney about a week ago and no one there minded my damage deck, though that could have been due to my squad of Vader and RAC.
The moralizing and demonization throughout here is borderline histrionic, by the way. Completely absurd.
