Cromprehension Problems

By YariSamurai, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hello fellow Star Wars fans,

I'd really like to buy one of FFG's Star Wars roleplaying games. Unfortunately I don't quite understand what the difference between "SW:Force and Destiny" (Is it an add-on?) and "SW Force and Destiny Beginner Game" ("Core Set"?) is.

Thank you,

YariSamurai

The Beginners Game is what it sounds like. A boxed game that's designed to introduce new players and/or GMs to the game or even Role Playing in general. It comes with a guided adventure and pregen characters. It's designed to introduce the mechanics of the game at regular intervals instead of dumping it all on you at once. All total there's less than 100 pages of info here That being said it's also a stripped down version of:

SW: Force and Destiny Core Rulebook. This is the main book with all the rules. Experienced roleplayers and GMs could probably get away with just this book. This is a full 400+ page tome with the complete rules, background setting, GM advice, etc, etc.

I highly recommend the beginner's box set. Initially I was turned off to the idea.. why not pay for the the main book and call it a day.

But the fact it comes with dice puts it over the top for me. Gonna have to pay for a set (or likely 2) or dice anyways. Mine as well pay a little more for some character tokens, and a neat map. (Lots of other stuff too, but that's the list of stuff I cared the most about and justified the cost by itself)

Also if you're new to the system it does do a really good job breaking it down for you. I'm a very experienced gamer and I appreciated the guidance.

Welcome to the Force!

The Beginners Box is the tutorial level. The CRB is the actual meat of the game.

Considering this system uses custom dice, a set of which comes in the Beginner Box, thats generally a good place for a group new to this system to start. There is a free PDF that continues the story from the Beginner box available here under the player resources tab, it will turn the adventure into a 4-6 session adventure (depending on play speed and session length etc). it also has all pre-generated characters and no rules for character creation, although there is a system of character advancement. all of it is slightly different to the core rules, although the underpinning game mechanics are the same.

If your group is confident then jump straight into the Core book, but you will need to pick up some dice (or the Dice App if your unable to get actual dice). It has an adventure in the back of it too, although its not as long as the Beginner box with the PDF.

Mostly your going to want more dice though, we have 4 sets to share at the table for a group of 6 and thats fine. In general the more dice you have the less time is wasted passing dice around.

So I'm new to SWRPG and have collected all the Force and Destiny books and beginner game. But now I'm looking at Edge of the Empire books (I'm a bit of a completist). Are the other beginner games for EotE and AoR worth picking up if I already have the one for FaD?

Since they have dice, maps and tokens they generally are worth the money, If you think of them more as an adventure with free dice. The adventures can be adapted to other groups and existing campaigns, or at least have pieces lifted out for other campaigns. But if you already have dice, or don't want the adventure ideas, then you will get more from the Core book since the Player options fit so well.

If you're a completest then the answer to your question is yes. Otherwise it wouldn't be complete without them. :P
