Newbie Questions

By tcabril, in CoC General Discussion

I just recieved my Call of Cthulhu Core Set and I can see that I am going to enjoy this game.

I do have some quick questions, however:

Q1: On page 6 under "For the First Game" it states one can mixe any of the two factions together. Does that mean all the cards with the same faction symbol?

Q2: When you play cards in the Operations Phase - if you have neutral cards do you have to pay for them with neutral resource icon cards? There just does not seem to be enough neutral cards to make this work effectively.

Q3: Looking at the "Game Set Up and Suggested Play Area Diagram" on page 7 - based upon the rules under the Operations Phase - it does not appear that those cards can be legally set up - I understand that this may be for demonstrative purposes only.

Thanks!

1) - As I understand it you can mix as many factions as you like.. it is all up to you... but there are Heroic and Villainous attributes that mean you can not cast a bad guy when a good guy is down... this is a text effect on some of the cards. There is also a Neutral faction... though apart from "theme" tose cards are more about no needed factions symbols to cast. The "2 factions" thing in the manual is a suggestion... as in "If you just mix 2 factions to make a deck you get X deck sets right out of the box"

2) - As I understand it ... (I am pretty new to this as well.. I got coaxed form magic the gathering by this new price model "living card game").. anyway as I see it a Neutral card can be paid with ANY faction symbol. So you just need to drain a domain with a minimum of resources to pay the cost...

3) - Um... not sure what you mean here... that "shot" is what the table should look like. In a real game though there would most likely be domain markers on the some of the opponents domains...

Neutral is actually factionless, not a faction. And magic can keep its "cast" nomenclature. But anyhoo.

ok

1. you can mix any two factions, thats 2 differnent sybols, plus a 3rd if you wish some of the grey neatral cards

2, nope neatral cards can be paid with ant amount of any rescourse

3. i think youre refering to the cards that are laid, and you are right really those cards could not be lais as theres for one not enough rescourses for them to be laid, its just an example

and most importantly welcome to the game and forum mate :)

1. So you can only have 2 faction at a time max? I thought you could mix them as much as you wanted.

Also my understanding was that same as johnny shoes as in natural was not a faction... just the absence of a faction so to speak... So when you talk about a 3 faction deck.. I would have think that would be 3 factions + you could also have neutral and conspiracy cards.

2. nope neutral cards can be paid with any amount of any type of resources (just added a word to your 2nd point as it was confusing me)

Cast / Pay.... I think you know what it means. As a player of many games I get all those terms that they use so they do not step on each others copyright all mixed up. Exhausted, Tap, Kneel, Disengage ... lol w/e it all means the same thing

yes you can mix as much as you like, but i was just answering the op as asked, but you will find it easier, playing a twin faction deck really does run better, even though i have some more fun tri decks.

it easier to find cards and synergies with just 2 factions, that also doesnt take into account neautrals which are not really counted when you say for example a twin faction deck, it can include neutrals but your main staple so to speak is 2 factions, and thanks for the 2nd point clarification happy.gif

mind you it is possible to run a mono neutral deck now, may not be a tourny winner but can win some games
