Proper method of dice rolling

By Podman74, in X-Wing Rules Questions

For starters, we have a few players at the local gaming store that like to roll dice individually. I have heard some claim that there is nothing wrong with this method, and other state that individually rolling dice alters the odds. I am curious as to if it is actually a point worth being concerned over, or if its totally fine to roll one die at a time?

Déjà vu

Did you mean to start another thread on this topic? (I'm guessing no, and that you attempted to make one, but since you didn't have any posts yet it was pending approval, and you tried again?)

I built a machine once that rolled green dice several thousand times to record the results. I even tested a visibly deformed die. The results, random. But the only thing I really proved that my rig would produce a truly random roll. It did not test whether doing the quick flip that most people do is actually random. My suggestion, use a dice cup. You can shake it up to your heart's content and not destroy your ships in the process.

Ok, new way to answer this.

Rolling dice one at a time does not NEED to change the odds. An issue is that it CAN be used to alter the odds when where/how you roll the second die depends on what the first die shows. Rolling one die at a time also makes it easier to manipulate results by how you roll.

Now there is something wrong with rolling them one at a time when you don't need to. The BIGGEST of those is that it is simply a waste of time. The second is that it can lead to those manipulation results I just mentioned above.

If you do strange **** when you roll dice, handle your dials, move your ships, or draw cards then expect to be accused of cheating.

Rolling 1 at a time feels like it easily can slip into an attempt to game the system. Under new tournament rules it's technically legal (though abusive and highly likely to get you disqualified) to roll 1 at a time to your specified amount, realize it's a bad roll, roll 1 more then say 'oh I rolled too many, I must reroll with the proper number'. Again, this is going to get you in trouble and is pretty obvious but disallowing rolling 1 at a time just removes that as even an option.

Such a great way to game the system. Slow roll and if you don't like because you're getting poor results and can't seem to knock them into better results just "accidentally" throw down one extra and do it again. Especially useful if the attack is not at R1 (Oh, I thought I was at R1 and got the extra die. Here let me shoot again.) or defense is not at R3.

MAYBE a TO would let you get away with this once (you'd better believe I'd make him aware of your rolling style) but anymore than that and something really needs to be done.
