pilot skill

By starrius, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello everyone.

I'm still pretty new to the system and recently was doing space combat and well t was noticed how pilot skill had no effect on the manoeuvres that were used during combat.

This seems a little odd how can someone with now skill be able to do as well on evasive manoeuvres as a no skill 1 agility character.

Any suggestions how to improve this so that a pilot actually feels worth while?

Read the difficult terrain rules in that chapter and use them a lot. Also use the chase rules as much as possible.

But in a straight up dog fight generally your better with good Gunnery than Piloting, which I'm actually ok with, if you think of Gunnery more like the dogfight skill and Piloting the "I steer well" skill.

thanks i'll try that

This is a common misconception with this system. Your ranks in the pilot skill don't fully represent a skilled pilot, that is what the talents are for. Think of the skill ranks as technical know how, or textbook learning, and talents as practical knowledge.

For another example, lets use a car driver as an example. Having ranks in the skill will let you drive day to day, and if necessary give you the know how to avoid a collision by making a check to stop in time. (Talking on a comlink adds a two setback dice and upgrades the difficulty twice). Now most people make out fine with just the skill ranks. But then you have the stunt drivers, these are the folks that can do pretty impressive things, hace knowhow that most don't - like William Shatner getting the stubt crew to shave the emergency break slightly, so it doesn't lock up the wheels when you pull it, for T.J. Hooker - these things represent Talents.

When you combine these two elements, practical (talent) and theoretical (skill) knowledge, you then will have a good pilot.

Brilliant Evasion (Talent) is when you'll want to have a great Pilot Skill.
