You ignore the
ESCORT
and
COUNTER
keywords on enemy squadrons.
Ok I understand the Escort part, but the Counter keyword does that mean if IG-88 attacks a Squad with counter that they cannot roll a counter on him?
Wording on IG-88 card
That is correct.
I find IG is great for tying up A-wings or TIE Interceptors, mostly because he can knock them out of the sky without much opposition.
That is correct. In Soviet Russia, IG counters YOU.
umm may need to rethink my squad now that my friend runs a lot of Awings in his build

Not rules related. Main problem with this is that if you happen to play someone with no squads, and you bring IG-88, you might as well have brought a TIE Advanced with a ton of points left over. Thats generally why hes not popular.

That is true, he's expensive.
I dig Iggy Pop because he's a thick-skinned, fighter killing Rogue at speed 5. Activate 5 squadrons with an ISD, they pin down the opponent's squadrons, then bring IG88 in from boonies during the squadron activation phase to take an easy kill on the squadron your opponent really didn't want killed (Rhymer, Ors, Dengar, Fel, etc.) with no retaliation. Then, when they want revenge, he's got counter2 (3 if Dengar is hunting nearby) with a scatter. If Dengar's around and IG survives, he can disengage after he gets a shot off. Oh yeah, and he's got a black ship battery (75% chance of a hit).
But he is expensive.
As a rebel player it's mauler I hate. With Chiraneau he moves around every activation and does one point to every squad around him that doesn't activate counter. Then he ges a normal attack if he wants it.

Kill him with IG-88
IG-88's true beauty comes from superior positions.... he can move and then attack on the rear hull of any ship for at least 4 turns every game... he alone earns 45 points.

How so? He can't shoot at ships if he's engaged by a non-heavy?

any squad/ship in this game comes at just face value.... until you add a grand strategy to it... i'm just saying ig88 can add strategy to the right list.
like with a squad heavy list + ig88, you can do some work on superior positions... where as just 21 points for the cute little robot is a steal.

You're not really saying anything...but I'm guessing his speed + rogue makes him potentially valuable for ass shots?

Maybe i'm missing something? i dont understand whats so confusing or wrong about what i am saying? ig88 is the best squad to have on superior positions... easily. maybe i have to clarify this statement and say that it is my opinion?
obviously by picking ig88, its not a guaranteed 45 points on superior positions... but it wouldn't be that hard either.
now yes, there are counters to ig88 earning 45 points on superior positions, but that's where strategy/synergy come in. it is a strategy game after all... there are things your opponent can do to stop it, and there are things you can do to help it... i didn't think that needed to be said either.
IG-88 only gets the Superior squadron points if he is able to move and shoot a rear hull zone and isn't tied up by enemy fighters AND that black dice comes up with a damage. Given his abilities are specialized towards destroying protected squadrons, that feels like a waste to me. If you're looking for something that can milk Superior Positions, Intel supported commanded TIE Bombers (sheer volume of attacks) or Rogue Firesprays (reliable 2 dice attack, Rogue) would get my vote.

I cannot understand why IG88 is the "best" squadron on the Sup Positions objective. Sure, he's a fast rogue with a black dice, but why would you use him for shooting at ships when his special is killing squadrons protected by escorts and/or counter? By far the best Imp squadron for this objective is the TIE Bomber. Or maybe the Firespray is you want a rogue.
