More story and more exploration?

By BrianBard, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Greetings,

I love Descent. I have played the original campaign, trollfens, LoW, SoN, and am working through Heirs of Blood....

I used to play RPGs but can't play them now due to time constraints and lack of a playgroup. Having said this, I am so glad that I found Descent. The tactical combat is really awesome and the grid/map miniatures part is better than what I could come up with as DM with pathfinder and dnd....

But, Descent is not an rpg... I miss the exploration and story development part of rpg play

Besides the new app and the co-op expansions, does anyone have any homebrews that add exploration and storytelling?

I guess I would like to have a feeling that we are searching for an answer and finding it... the fluff text does this for us, but is there a way to make the heros work for it a little more?

Maybe an expanded campaign phase?

I saw in 1e road to legend (I never played it), that there was a big world board also...

Could I homebrew descent into a runebound type map where the heros do quests to discover what is going on and get powerful weapons, etc...

Does this make sense? Again, the published campaigns are awesome, I just feel like the story and exploration are handed to the heros if they can hold on through the quests....

For sure makes sense. I just didn't this myself due the lack of time, but it's always what I have in mind about descent. Just like you I'm used to pen and apper rpg and miss that kind of stuff in descent.

You can create your our campaign, you just plenty material in the boxes to do it, go ahead and let us know :)

I came across a home built campaign that looked neat on boardgame geek a while back. Haven't had a chance to really dig into it, but from what I skimmed over it seemed like an interesting journey. You might take a look at this: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/861678/campaign-silken-threads It may also provide you some inspiration for your own homebrew campaign. You might be able to take the 1st Edition Road to Legend and Seas of Blood campaigns and translate them to Descent 2E. This is something I pondered, but might not do it as I have a group that gets together every few weeks for RPG night. Was going to use some material from those quests in my RPG game.

Sounds promising. Thanks for sharing :)

I'm currently in the process of designing such a campaign using the quest vault. I haven't looked but I'm sure others have done the same thing. The quest vault may be a good place to search.
