Favorite Wave 8 squad so far?

By JJFDVORAK, in X-Wing

Ok so what is your favorite wave 8 squad so far? And I don't mean "I addeda base TAP or Jumpmaster to my favorite squad" I mean a squad made up majorally of Wave 8 ships. So what is your W8 squad? How did you do?

My favorite Wave 8 squad is:

Sienar Test Pilots with V1 title, Guidance Chips, and Proton Rockets x 5.

I only played it once against a Dash/Ehtan list but it did great and was a blast to play. My friend uses Mangler cannon instead of HLC to avoid the doughnut and then gets a second crit from Ehtan. He came up quickly with Dash on Turn One, and shot with his Mangler but I evaded them all. I shot back and he evaded. Turn Two, I used my lower PS to quickly move up and barrel rolled to block Dash. Then he shot with no dice modification at a ship in my formation, but again I evaded. Ehtan had bumped a rock and couldn't shoot. Then I unloaded with the TAPs (only one could shoot his prockets since the others had barrel rolled) and between the one procket shot and 3 range 1- 3 dice attacks, I killed Dash. Then the guy who had been in contact with Dash, shot at Range 3 into Ehtan and did two damage. The the turn ended with my ships untouched (4 with Prockets still) and Ehtan with only 1 shield and 2 hull left. My friend called it at that point. So anyway, I know this was pretty much a best case scenario, but it still seems like with the TAPs close range dial and 5 Prockets, it should be a pretty good list. It's fun eitherway.

What have you tried?

I tried the 5 procket list and didn't like it. Probably a good squad to bring against a list with fat PWT's but if your opponent has more ships it gets harder to use those rockets.

I am liking the 4 barons list with PTL and Title and AT a lot more. Beat a ghost/shuttle/awing list with it today but my opponent was using it for the first time and not quite used to it yet.

4-Lom with PtL, Cloaking Device and Mist Hunter Title

Fly him like an aggressive B-wing and dump your stress onto your opponent's ships during the end phase. When you need to bug out or if you know you wont have a shot, cloak and evade.

Paired that set up with Dengar and a generic Khiraxz the other night to strong effect

I'm having quite a bit of fun (and success) with Sabine. The crew card that is. Currently I'm running her on a Warden w/ TLT, Conners, Seismics, EM, AdvS and TLT. It's an god awful expensive ship, which is why I'm trying to shy away from it - perhaps by dropping the TLT (but it's so useful on turns when I don't AdvS). But I haven't lost yet, and that ship has been the MVP of every match.

That said, something even more fearsome is needed. I've been running it with budget Chopper and a Bandit w/ Concussions or the standard 37pt Poe. But the 22 points has kinda become an awkward total for rebels. Rookie w/ R2 + IA? Blue? Gold w/ Protons? None of these excite me that much. Perhaps an Green Squadron w/ PTL and Juke/Crack? Or a Prototype with Protons? So many choices, none seem that exciting. Plus while Poe is obnoxious, everyone fears the 4 dice primaries of Chopper.

What is the strength of the 4 Baron's list? I don't have my pilot cards in front of me, do they make for good arc dodgers with such a low pilot skill?

I've enjoyed flying this. Gives the Palpmobile extra utility and I learned quickly that the Inquisitor is pretty hard to hit.

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Electronic Baffle (1)
Tractor Beam (1)
Emperor Palpatine (8)
Ion Projector (2)
The Inquisitor (25)
Push the Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
TIE/v1 (1)
Darth Vader (29)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)
Total: 99

Scyk Scyk Sputnik

Serrisu w/SD, TB

3 x TPV w/ Manglers

ALL of them with Attanni Mindlink.

Fun, semi-competative, non-meta.

I mean, my favorite list at the moment uses a single 1-point upgrade from Wave 8, but Rage is what makes the Swarm viable these days.

How have you been doing with the Youngster Rage and 7 Academies? I'm a former swarm player so I want to try it but I'm burnt out on playing useless genericwing ships.

Does it have a chance against Palp Aces and squads that feature Soontir in general?

Triple U-Boat is the only super wave 8 squadron I've been flying. It's great fun, and unlike quad TLT it isn't a chore to fly.

Quad gammas with quad homing missiles, quad EM, and quad chips also if that counts.

The 8-TIE Rageswarm has difficulties against Palp-Aces offensively, until you remember how to block.

Still, I find greater success in that match-up with a 7 TIE swarm.

Youngster + Rage

Epsilon Leader

Wampa + Hull

4x Academy

Wampa with a 42% chance of using his ability at Range 2-3 rather terrifies the Aces :).

I've tried that too, using

Jonus w/thread tracers x2

Scimitar w/Assault Missiles, Cluster Missiles, EM, Guidance Chips x4

Pretty fun. Not very competitive. Lost to Palp Aces(but at least I killed Palp)
