Which new EU book should I read next?

By Tailsgod, in X-Wing Off-Topic

So I just finished Dark Disciple and I have to say it was pretty alright, some of the emotional bits didn't hit as hard as I would like them too and I feel a little underwhelmed from the ending but I enjoyed a good majority of the book

I read New Dawn a while back and loved that one, really enjoy Kanaan and Hera's relationship and I feel like the book does a lot to deepen their relationship in the show as well

Aftermath was what I read last... And it was boring with no real standout characters beyond Mr. Bones. It felt almost too campy and kinda dragged its feet throughout. Overall I recommend simply for the last chapter which I do admit was a great one

And finally I also read Lost Stars which was amazing. Some slow points but I forgive it because of some of the amazing characters it explores and for having some truly amazing moments. It helped that I listened to it on audiobook so John Williams scores blasted just at the right times.

(In fact I recommend a lot of these as audiobooks because the music that they include really helps sell the scenes and give them more emotional punch)

So now I'm curious what to read next, I have one audible credit to spend and I really want to know what might be worth the listen (also I already listened to the book version of ep VII, also pretty great btw)

What do you guys recommend?

Tarkin?

Lords of the Sith?

Heir to the Jedi?

Smugglers Run?

Weapon of the Jedi?

Moving Target?

Or some other one I don't know about?

Tarkin.

All of them.

If your a fan of the clone wars, lords of the sith has Cham syndulla in it; actually, just read it anyways, the parts with vader and palpatine are amazing. Tarkin is also very good, would recommend. Now, stay very far away from heir to the Jedi, it is just soooo bad. It's written in first person perspective from Luke's perspective and is no good. His characterization of Luke is bad, and the writing itself is inconsistent. He throws around Star Wars words like "airspeeder" and "the force", hoping you won't notice how bad it is. Sorry, rant over. But yeah, lords of the sith and tarkin are excellent books!

Heir to the Jedi certainly starts of really badly but once it got going I really enjoyed it a lot.

I've not read either Weapon of a Jedi or Moving Target, purely because they're not available on Kindle (at least not in the UK), but if you love Star Wars then all the current canon books are well worth a read. Some are better than others and there are a few awful bits, but overall I'm sure you'll enjoy all of them.

Just to point out.....those are not EU books. They are part of the new canon books. They are regular books that are all part of the actual story.

This is EU, but not a book, book. Darth Vader(Keiron Gillen) the new Marvel comic line. It's up to issue 18 and you can get it in trade paperback form, six issue bundles. It takes place right after ep. IV and The Emperor is pissed at Vader for the Death Star's destruction. There is quite a lot going on in this storyline, with cool new bountyhunters and a dark version of our favorite droids that work for Vader in secret. As far as audiobooks go I got a neat one for christmass, The Princess, The scoundrel, and the farmboy. It's a retelling of A New Hope from the perspectives of the three main characters. It's good but might not be what your looking for.

Lords of the Sith is fun, even though it is almost as much about Cham Syndulla as it is Vader.

I read the excerpt of Lords of the Sith on Google Play Books and I gotta say it was just not that interesting. Very, very little to do with Vader and Palpatine. The parts following the "good guys" had them needlessly torturing badguys because it made them feel better.

It was bland. The violence was unnecessary. It just wasn't a good read to me. So I didn't buy it.

Just finished Tarkin
It was pretty good!

Oh, one note. You know the kid character in this? Timon? He was in the new movie as an adult. He was an X-wing pilot. He was the guy with dark hair and a beard. The one some call "new Porkins".

Doesn't make him more likeable

Was at a bookstore today and ran into the problem of....."huh there's a lot here. "

Having never read anything by anyone since splinter of the minds eye in the 80s....I had no clue...at all...where to begin.

I was mildly interested in the one that looked like it had to do with the rebels TV show... But nothing's numbered or dated. No idea where anything fits in a timeline.

Ended up getting nothing at all and feeling irritated.

Yeah, Expanded Universe is a different continuity than the Disneyverse.

I had to Google the new books. The Rebels one is good. Start there.

Yes....but we will see more and more of EU characters and overall plots pulled into the canon material. I don't think exactly the same as it was, but I bet they pull a lot in. Personally, I think that's a good thing. I didn't care for the majority of the EU books and now they can just re-write them, but better.

Just look at Mara Jade. People are saying she's been deleted. Not true. She's a legend right now. How much you want to bet that they will eventually bring around a Mara Jade character into the canon? Oh, it might not be the same story as before, but she'll be there. She's too cool to get rid of.

From a movie-centric perspective - everything that's not movies is EU.

So, there's two EUs

Legends EU

Newcanon/Disneyverse EU.

For those interested in Rebels - A New Dawn is a prequel to it, showing how Kanan & Hera first met and teamed up.

If you're interested, and have not read it yet, Timothy Zahn did some excellent EU (Legends) writing! The Thrawn Trilogy is definitely a classic.

Yes, go read the proper EU books. The Thrawn trilogy that restarted it all is good. There were many others but it all gets very samey after a while, some threat appears so of course the leaders of the galaxy have to run off to investigate etc..

Some standouts are the X-wing/Wraith series (also very funny) and the New Jedi Order. It is a breath of fresh air for a license that was becoming repetitive and stale. It is much darker in tone and anyone can, and does, die. It is to SW novels what Netflix's DareDevil and Jessica Jones are to comic book TV shows. There are also many great and epic scenes. Star by Star in particular is amazing, one of my favourite sc-fi books of any type.

Have read all the non 'young adult' Disnyverse books and they are pretty poor over all, not unreadable or atrocious just not very good wither.

Lost Stars was the only one worth while since it gave a look into the lives and views of regular Imperial citizens and members of the armed forces.

The Force Awakens book was terrible, I was shocked that it was from a veteran SW writer like Alan Dean Foster, but still maybe read it since it at least explains parts of the film that did not make sense (eg. able to mind trick out of nowhere) or where it was obvious scenes had been cut (Leia's story line). Also some interesting comments on Rey from Jacen.. I mean Ben.

It is sad that so many far superior (and some terrible) books have been cast out and replaced with such mediocre stories.

Why do you care? Those stories are still out there, you know.

I just finished Lords of the Sith and rather liked it, although I would have enjoyed it more had Rebels not spoiled the outcome roughly.

Thrown Trilogy

Hand of Thrawn duology

Choices of One

Anything Timothy Zahn really

Republic Commando is the best imho, though I know most people wouldn't agree.

I'll take issue with this. I agree that the one with Luke was really really bad. Aftermath was OK and not as horrible as some people suggest. I really liked Tarkin and A New Dawn. I thought those were excellent and better than most EU stuff I have read.

The Thrawn series was pretty good, but after that, the rest of it is at best OK. There are a lot of people that act like the EU books were amazing. They weren't.

Eh, post Heir to the Empire trilogy novels is a mixed bag for Zahn. ESPECIALLY after the Hand of Thrawn duology.
