Attack Shuttle Reconstruction

By Eisai, in X-Wing

So, I got my Ghost on release day, and decided a few hours later that I was going to mutilate it. I figured I could relatively easily free the Attack shuttle decorating its aft, and maybe magnetize it or something to show it being docked/undocked.

I got home, and after a bit of levering it up, discovering it was only attached to the Ghost by a thin piece of plastic at the top, I had it free.

Having liberated the half-Phantom (the entire lower half doesn't exist aft of the guns), I decided I'd try rebuilding it to fly on its own. I didn't have any sheet styrene on hand, so I had to order some, and it came in last night. Tonight I began my rebuilding efforts.

Considering what it looked like to start with, I think it's coming along fairly well. Still quite a bit of work to do on it. I'll try and post some more wip pics as I work on it, and when I'm finished (at which point I'll toss it over into the collected thread for safekeeping :P )

When it's done, I plan to work on the back end of the Ghost so that it can be stored there for transport. And to represent docking/undocking as was my original idea.

Hah - nice! That was exactly my idea, although I'd imagined (since I'm lazier, and I suppose have too much disposable income) that the "easier" way to do this would be to buy a second 'Ghost' kit, entirely, and create the 'docking' Phantom by cutting down from the standalone model.

I think that way may be the wrong way, though - seeing how easily that came off, I think you've got the right plan down! Just build that out so it can easily plug in or be removed from the Ghost model whenever the Phantom is on its rounds!

If I got 4 Ghost (which I don't make enough money to do so) I would try and attempt something like this.

I actually got a second Ghost, with the intention that I'd only mod the one. Seeing how well this is going on the first attempt though, I'm tempted to do the other as well. And then play 4 Attack shuttles :P

Of course, if I do that at a tournament, I'll have to make sure to have a friend who has two more to borrow in case someone complains. Because yeah, not buying two more Ghosts just for Attack Shuttles.

Op, you are A LOT braver than I! Nice work.

Nice! I was wondering how long it would be before someone tried it.

Interesting how it was 'attached'. I was a bit disappointed when I realized that the Phantom wouldn't actually dock/undock.

One problem you'll run into is that those top panels are actually the wings folded up (and why I was disappointed there's no yellow on the bottom of the attack shuttle's wings).

My intent is to rebuild it as if the wings were folded. So much easier :P

If I really wanted to, however, I suspect it wouldn't be too hard to do a bit of dremeling and rebuild the lower wing as well.

I'm also going to paint my actual Attack Shuttles so they have the stripe on the underside of the wing correctly.

awesome!

As cool as this is why would u make a complete shuttle that won't be able to fit back on the ghost? If u wanna use 2 u will need another dial which u will have to borrow (at this point why not borrow the model as well) or have a second ghost again for the dial and u will have the shuttle from there?

Looks great tho :P not bashing or anything just don't see the point to rebuilding the shuttle when I think it would be easier to just have that built to dock and in dock to represent if the shuttle was docked or not.

Or go full maniac and do both. Have the undercarriage and wings on a flight stand and magnetized. Pop the cockpit and upper hull off the Ghost, and lock it onto the base.

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week.

Got the rest of the rebuild done this evening, now time to start working on adding details.

Man you just made my day. I was so eager to do this but i was afraid ... :P Now seeing the halfphantom is separate part holded only by 1 pin.... :)

Big thanks mate

AAAANNNNDDD mine is already detached :D managed to get even clener line than you :D

Yeah, IF I do the other one I have, I'll probably only use an x-acto to detach the shuttle. I wasn't sure how thick the plastic was, so I used my dremel this time.

There isn't a lot of room for the shuttle at the back (if only the wings could fold :3).

In they were a bit thicker you could cut them off, then drill through them, split each wing into three pieces and run wires through the holes. That way you could possibly fold them by bending the wires.

So... maybe turn it into a gunship instead?

Any further progress on the modding? I'm keen to see what you do with the back of the Ghost.

Started this the week before Spring break (currently a sub teacher), and then, inconveniently, school started back up again. I've gotten a bit of detail work on the rebuilt Phantom done, have a bit more to do. This past week was also the lead up to our Regional here, so more time was spent playing than anything else. I'm also working on building a pair of portable gaming tables which has taken up some time.

Hopefully by next weekend I've at least finished up the detail work/maybe have some paint on the Phantom. If I get that far, maybe I'll get to work rebuilding the back end of the Ghost. Figure it's not worth doing much to it until I have the Phantom done and know how much space I need.

So, a couple quick updates. Details are finished (and peg installed), images are kind of crappy since I took them after priming white on a white background. Yeah. The rear didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, but right now I'm not going to tear it apart and rebuild it again. Hopefully next week I'll start in on the rear of the Ghost. and maybe paint up the rebuilt shuttle.

Man, that looks like crap. Oh well, should look better with some paint.

stubbywip11_zps9ent2wg6.jpg
Yep. Half of it's completely faded into the background.

So, decided I'd bring my Rebel and Scum stuff up into my apartment this evening to paint engines, and when I pulled out the Ghost from which I'd detached Stubby here, I spur-of-the-moment decided to start to work on the back of it. Took a fair bit of dremeling. Apparently if you dremel inside enough, though, you can cut through several attachment points and slide the upper engines out.

This should actually make it easier to work on getting a nesting place for the shuttle finished, though it will require a bit more work in the touchup department.

So, the attack shuttle itself is finished, painting done. Haven't made any further progress on the Ghost (except a bit of repainting the rear yellow bits to match the same color I had to use on the shuttle).

Overall I'm pleased with how it turned out. Specifically, I think the rear looks like crap, but I didn't want to go to the trouble of cutting it back apart and re-rebuilding it.

A pic with it with the Ghost too. And a comparison with my unmodified VCX. I fdidn't think to grab an actual shuttle model for comparison when I took the pics.

Looks flush - great job!

Finally some more progress to report (I know, it's been a while -- I've requested this thread be moved to the painting/mod subforum as well).

The docking area is coming along, finally. This was conveniently posted in a different thread somewhere; thanks to whomever found and posted it.

ghost_dock_zps75tsdypm.jpg

My docking area won't have quite that detail, but it'll be good enough.

ghost_dock1wip_zpsdi5bidqm.jpg

Mainly I need to do a bit more trimming/filing, and then add the actual docking door. And of course repaint it all.

Essentially finished now, other than a bit of touchup painting. Otherwise done, glued back together. Also added an extra peg that centers the Ghost for use with normal pegs, since I hate the three-prong thing.
