[RPG 4th edition] Court of the Minor Clans

By droidscotty, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hi everyone!

After many hours collecting, reading and editing files,

I finally completed a compilation of minor clans for L5R 4th edition. I give you the link below.

Court of the Minor Clans

Enjoy your reading!

Thanks a lot!!!

I've always wondered about creating a few of my own but having these made by others is so cool!

A "hedgehog" and a "rooster" clans appeared in my own Rokugan but only with some very, very basic homebrew mechanics backing them.

<-Creator of the Eel Clan, very happy to see them getting spread around.

Alas that the Yak, Sandpiper, and my version of the Moth clans were not even a glint in my eye back when AEG's forums were operable... 'cause those even have nifty little mons and post-Iweko II stories to go with them...

I would be very happy to update the document with new clans as long as they meet some conditions:

-The clan doesn’t exist yet: it has a proper symbolic, a legitimate purpose for the Empire and true (even if dark) goals.

-The description of the clan should be complete with the same paragraph pattern as the book: (Founding, Geography & Economy, Demography, Customs, Family, Schools Paths and Dojos, a motto and a mon.)

-The schools techniques should be complete (5 techniques for bushis and courtiers), original ones and equilibrated as much as possible.

You can also propose new ancestral items, ancestors, advanced schools, or specific rules as long as I’ve space enough to include them properly into the book.

I’m also working on a book for the Emerald Empire of Stars (from the Imperial Histories 2). So if you can detail the purpose of the clan into a futuristic Rokugan, I should also include it on the other book.

2° If you have specific demands for a mon you can contact Evan Walters Design via http://www.evanwaltersdesigns.com/ . He draws the lost clan’s mons. I’ve done some of the book’s mons by myself but I’m not an illustrator, I just use Photoshop at a basic level. I do it freely but you’ll have to accept the results as I can’t modify or draw an original picture by myself.

You work will of course be credited into the book and appear inside on a future update.

Your doing stuff for Empire of the Emerald Stars? Is there a way to see it? I actually ran an Emerald Stars game at a con soon after Histories II came out. I kind of cheated by using a Mechwarrior Scenario, but it seemed to fit quite well.

I also have artwork of a Crab Clan Bushi for Emerald Stars, and am in the process of commissioning some art for a katana-class cruiser.

Thanks a lot for this effort, this a great reference for both GMs and Players alike.

Now with my questions:

1. Can the names be repeated, with different theme and school?

2. Can I use a ronin path as a starting point to develop my own minor clan, lime the Yotsu and the Tiger?

1. When I have a name or an animal for a clan that already exists, I try to find another that fit well or to adapt the idea for the existing one. I don't think that to have two dog clans or three cats clans would be very appreciated even if it's a white cat, a black cat and a grey cat... Remember that the symbols are in use for troop recognition on the battlefields and/or to identify a clan on the first sight, it's an unlikely situation.

2. You can do whatever you want just as long as the Emperor has a good reason to award them a family name and/or a minor clan status. ;)

I've updated the file with some corrections. New clans are already in progress to join the files. I hope to make other updates quickly. :P

-Under working: Lynx Clan, Hawk Clan, Hedgehog Clan, Rooster Clan

Edited by droidscotty

I would really like to add my Hedgehog and rooster....but haven't found time to properly write them (and translate what I also made in Italian...).

Hi! I updated the file:

-Added the Elephant Clan

-Added the Tern Clan

-Correction of the Seahorse Clan technique.

The Neko family of the Cat clan has given me a facepalm.

The Obake clan seems interesting, but it seems to me that the word "obake" means "monster" and it seems not right as name of a clan. Also, have you ever consider to make a monks clan? They existed.

The Rakuda family is in short the bedouins of Rpkugan. Have you ever consider to take inspiration from the Sanka people?

I'm not the author of the Cat, Camel and Obake clans. I only have very limited contacts with the original authors and I don’t give me the rights to modify their work more than the strict necessity to keep them « canon » and alive. I voluntary limited my job to collect as many information as I can. So thank you for your suggestions but there is nothing I can do.

Hi! I updated the file again:

-Added the Nightingale Clan

Hi! I updated the file again:

-Added the Lynx Clan, work of Daigotsu Masanori

Thanks Droidscotty, and I need to give a big thanks to Okuma! Who helped me a lot.

Hope you guys like the Lynx as much as I do and find a place in your Rokugan for them.

Now move to the Hawk!

Hi!

I've updated the file recently with the Hedgehog and the Cormorant Clans ^^

It is nice to see my creation (Hummingbird Clan) still being passed around.

I also did the Scarab (I was legit confused for a moment and thought someone else's version was in there), but that's not listed in the credits.

It's good to see that this project is still around!!

I know I promised a Rooster clan to be shared...but never did!

I've also noticed that you put your version of the "Hedgehog"...although I still prefer my own "Hedgehog" since they have a rougher, "vengeful", more warlike and more crab-like mood!

I corrected the credits.

There is always a place for the Rooster clan if you wish. ^^

It's NOT my version of the Hedgehog. It's one I found on 1d4Chan. If your complete your Hedgehog clan, as long as it remains an original one end you agree to find another animal, I would always be happy to add it too. ;)

Use it as you like...but my Hedgehog, remains the Hedgehog! (at least in my own games).

It's the best defining animal and I feel that it fits my clan (of stubborn, defensive spearmen) more than that version.

So...what other animals? Porcupine? Histrix?

I know these english words sometimes refer to two different no related species.

By the way, choose what you prefer.

I just toying with another idea....Sea Urchin/Urchin but unfortunately my Hedgehog has nothing to do with the sea.

Actually, that would be very realistic! See the War of the Roses in England's history, with the York House using a white rose as symbol and the Lancaster House using the red rose!

I've a problem to change the Hedgehog I find on 1d4 Chan since it has already a mon with it...

You're are free to keep the hedgehog for your own clan. I don't have so much problem into french...

I just would like to have another animal if you like I put it into Court of the Minor Clans.

Remember also, I need a fully complete description and motto, a mon and a true purpose (that doesn't already exist in the fan book)

The origin of heraldry still comes from a need for troop recognition on the battlefields...

Back to the crusades all crusaders used St Georges cross as their symbol. The color of it served to difference their language between them: red on white for French, white on red for English, black on white for German, Green on white for Dutch…But all of them were in the same faction...

I’m not here to make or receive a history lesson, just to design L5R material. To do so properly and keep quality, I had to establish some rules and limits as I'm not the author of much of the material. I only collect things and tries to adapt them to keep them canon and alive. You're free to adapt the material again to your needs and tastes. ;)
