Planatary Obsticles, Surface emplacements - The Battle of Hoth

By Funk Fu master, in Star Wars: Armada

So I was thinking about utilising some mechanics from BFG and Sails of Glory to implement planets as obsticles. With the release of Rebellion soon, we also have some cool looking Ion Cannons and Shield generators coming out.

So, first

Obsticle: Planet

Shape: a crescent 3 foot wide by disance 5 deep, with a straight edge.

Rules:

When a ship within medium range of a planet executes a manouvre, it may increase its yaw value by 1 click towards the planet.

When a ship is overlapping a planet executes a manouvre, it must decrease its yaw value by 1 click away from the planet.

Surface defence network: The surface defence network counts as a single ship for activation. It consists of several surface emplacements that act as a combined defence. When activated or defending you measure all rangesfrom the edge of the planet closest to the emplacement. You may fire once per weapon emplacement. When a redirect defence token is used, you may redirect the damage onto any one other emplacement, as long as that emplacement as sufficient shield value to absorb the damage allocated.

Surface emplacement: Ion Cannon (10 points)

Hull: 4

Shields: -

Defence Tokens: Brace, Brace, Redirect

Anti ship battery: 5 Blue Dice (360 Arc)

Upgrades: Ion Cannon slot

Surface emplacement: Missile Defence silo (10 points)

Hull: 4

Shields: -

Defence Tokens: Brace, Brace, Redirect

Anti ship battery: 4 Blue Dice (360 Arc)

Upgrades: Ordnace Slot

Surface emplacement: Planatary Shield Generator (5 points)

Hull: 4

Shields: Add 3 Shield to every surface emplacement at the start of the game (Can stack)

Upgrades

Defence Tokens: Brace, Redirect, Redirect

Upgrades: Defensive retrofit

Surface emplacement: Planatary Command Centre (10 points)

Hull: 5

Shields: 2

Defence Tokens: Brace, Brace, Redirect

Squadron Value: 3

Engineering Value: 4

Command Value: 2 (Navigate commands cannot be selected)

Upgrades: Officer, offensive retrofit

Assault Objective: Planatary Assault

The first player receives 70 points towards a Surface defence network

The second player receives 70 extra points towards their fleet total

During the setup phase, the first player selects a short board edge and places the planet obsticle, and all other obsticles. They then place there surface emplacements anywhere within the planet obsticle. They then deploy the rest of there fleet within distance 5 of the planet. The second player then deploys there fleet within distance 5 of the opposite board edge.

End of game: Second player scores 15VP for every surface emplacement destroyed

Still thinking of some other objectives, such as blockade run. i.e Hoth

on a 3x6ft game area use the 3ft sides for deployment this represents the planets gravity well that prevents (sane) ship captains entering/leaving Hyperspace

how deep is the planet obstacle? range 3-5?

Looks like a Typo for the Missile Silo. Did you intend for it to have black dice?

What is the Rebel win condition for this design? Get away from the planet? Destroy more than the Imperial player in 6 turns?

The mission calls for using the short edges. and the obsticle description states it as distance 5 for depth

The missile silo is supposed to have black dice.

As for the first player win condition, it is just normal points. I wrote this one as a defended planet against an invading force.

I havent come up with a planet evacuating against a blockading force yet (al la battle of hoth)

I have been thinking of this one myself. I was thinking that a long edge should be the planet. It takes the first inch on that side, and the next 4" represent the atmosphere. Any turn a ship ends it turn in the atmosphere it takes two points of damage. This is applied to the front facing but the redirect defense token can be used. This is the only defense token that can be used. I a ship ends it's movement in one inch of the edge(hits the planet) it is destroyed. Ships cannot collide with defense installations.

When flotillas come out, i think planetary invasion would be a good objective. The attacker gets points for flotillas that reach the planet.(these land and are not destroyed when they reach the edge of the map) The defender gets points for destroyed flotillas.

Are those defences not extremely under-costed?

I have no idea, I am away from my Armada stuff and opponents, this is all just bone idle theorycrafting because I am having withdrawals and need some sort of armada fix.

But I wasn't looking at the costs in relation to the other ships, you have a set amount of planatary defence points for the mission to spend, and this is what you can spend them on.

Some of these seem massively overpowered. The Ion Cannon either needs a serious nerf or a massive point increase. I can have 6 or these and 2 shield generators with my seven points, and the firepower and defense would rival that of several ships. I would recommend a maximum shield generator amount of 1 for balance reasons, and have everything double in price.

Or gimp it by forcing the shield to drop so the cannons/missiles can fire
