Boba v chewie

By acerimmer, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all, not sure if this has been covered as can't seem to find it anywhere, so asking for help.

Boba fett crew card v chewie crew card..

Can Boba be used to discard Chewie before the defending player discards to nullify the face up damage card and regain a shield? Is it down to initiative to determine which player resolves card abilities like this first?

Cheers all.

No. Boba triggers after the attack, whereas Chewie triggers during the attack.

Neither.

Boba only cares that the card was dealt face up. It doesn't matter what happened to it afterwards - so Chewie could flip it face down, or Determination or Integrated Astromech could discard it entirely, Boba would still trigger, because all he cares about is that the card was initially dealt face up.

However, the OP's question was "can Boba be used to discard Chewie before Chewie triggers?"

Because of the timing, Chewie (crew) triggers during the Deal Damage step, and part of his resolution is the Chewie crew card is discarded. Therefore, by the time Boba triggers after the attack, there's no Chewie for Boba to discard.

Boba would have to choose another of the defender's upgrade cards to discard.

Although both abilities are triggered over the course of the attack, they do not share the same timing trigger, and as such, they are not decided by initiative. Boba's trigger is "after performing an attack" and that happens only when all seven steps of the attack have been completed.

Hope that helped. :)

Oops, missed that part, apologies, thought it was about Boba vs Chewie Pilot. Sadly no, Boba can't usefully discard Chewie crew before Chewie crew discards himself anyway.

Actually, Boba CAN "usefully discard" Chewie in the sense that Chewie needs to be used before Boba get used. You deal a face-up card and Chewie goes to work on in then you can just hold onto Boba to use another time or you can choose to take a different upgrade.

Now if Chewie does NOT get used when the opportunity presents itself then Boba can take the Wookie away without it doing anything. In essence, having Boba basically means Chewbacca is going to be used at the first opportunity where it could be discarded unless there happens to be a much bigger upgrade threat on the same ship.

Either way, everyone's taking a one-way trip out the airlock.

True but when Boba's involved to guarantee some use from Chewie the wookie goes before Boba decides if he wants to go or not. Then if Chewie doesn't go Boba can take him out without his getting used.
