How would Keyan Pilot + Ezra crew + HLC interact

By Daefish, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

Pretty unlikely this will ever happen but let's say I'm running Keyan + Ezra crew and HLC and I am currently stressed

I'm specifically looking at timing here.

I roll 4 dice with HLC - they come up Focus, Focus, Crit, Hit.

I assume I have to immediately change the crit to a hit because of HLC right?

But then I have an option to change one of the focuses to a Crit right? I can trigger Ezra to do that?

And then after that is done, I can use Keyan's ability to change the other Focus to a Hit, removing my stress correct?

Do I have the pick of which order these go off on? Or, worse, do I have a "stack" where I have to remember that the top most effect resolves first, and the bottom most resolves last, meaning I have to do this in the right order.

Thanks in advance, it's nice to have these weird little situations clarified so I know how to either build or react if I see something like this in the wild.

Edit: Alternatively what if I had Mangler equipped, and rolled Focus, Focus, Focus (for example). I can't change right away a hit to a crit, but I can use Ezra to create a crit, then use Keyan to create 2 hits, which then would let me use Mangler to change to a crit?

You can choose which order to trigger your dice modifications in, and there's no stack. You can trigger Ezra because you're stressed, and then trigger Keyan to spend the stress.

Same principle applies to Poe and Weapon Guidance.

The same player controls all of the effects mentioned. Everything except the HLC shares the same timing. You can resolve them in any order you choose.

My favorite Keyan build to use these days are VI, Firing Control System, B-Wing/E2, Hera Syndulla

Being able to make any manoeuvers while being stressed is great for Keyans ability and the Firing Control System just makes him more accurate while using stress for focus tokens. This has been really effective for me.

I am currently running a Keyan HLC build. His other upgrades are Rage and advanced sensors. I had thought about using crew Ezra but decided to use those points on Biggs or Tycho.

But to the OP question.

1. after initial roll all crits get turned to hits.

2. use Ezra ability to change focus to crit

3.remove stress (using Keyans ability) to change other focus to a hit.

edit: You are correct on mangler question

Yep that's all legit.

Worth noting that you can use Keyan's ability regardless of whether any [eye] results remain.

What? A HLC can hit a defender with a crit result? I always thought that whatever modification you use in order to generate a crit result on a HLC shot, in the end you have to change for a hit result. Like it's a cost of your additional dice given by HLC. Seriously, are you able as a defender to receive a crit from a HLC with Ezra?

Yes.

The HLC changes the [kaboom] results to [boom] results immediately after the initial die roll and *only* then. It doesn't affect [kaboom] results generated by rerolls (e.g. from Predator or Target Lock) or from changing or adding results (e.g. Calculation, Marksmanship, or Ezra).

Thank you for clarifying my thinking on this. I may just have to give this a try.
