R5-P8 vs Cluster Missiles/TLTs

By RStan, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I recently had a friend of mine play a game in which this encounter occurred. Tel Trevura equiped with R5-P8 was getting fired upon by a Black Sun Ace with Cluster Missiles. The Black Sun Ace had only one health left when making this attack. After the first volley of attacks from Cluster Missiles, R5-P8 was rolled and the result was a hit which did the final damage to the Black Sun Ace.

I believe that since it's two attacks and R5-P8s card says "After defending" it would trigger after the first attack of Cluster Missile and destroy the Black Sun Ace. A few local players have debated whether the second attack from Cluster Missile should've been completed as part of a simultaneous rule or that the full attack of Cluster Missile should technically finish before R5-P8 can roll.

Thoughts?

The Black Sun Ace should have been destroyed, but the second Cluster Missile attack still happens. This is the same logic as Gunner taking a second shot from a ship that Vader just destroyed. The attack has triggered, and nothing short of the defender ceasing to be a legal target (e.g. Valen Rudor moving out of range) can stop it.

There was another thread talking about interrupted attacks. I believe it was decided that once an attack begins and is interrupted it completes if possible.

Likely to be debate here but the way I see it you only get the first shot.

1) simultaneous attack is irrelevant, the ace already shot by necessity to trigger r5p8

2) after defending happens after each attack, cluster missiles are just 2 distinct attacks that happen to follow each other and the second skips weapon selection and targeting

3) there's no trigger or anything on clusters for the second attack it just happens after completing the first attack which includes competing the after defending and after attacking steps. It's exactly the same as applying tactician stress to a ship after each tlt shot, it's shot, stress, shot, stress.

If the attacker suffers enough damage to be destroyed before a subsequent attack Yahya place, that second attack cannot take place UNLESS the ships are the same Pilot Skill AND the second ship has not attacked yet.

Incorrect. See the FAQ on the interaction between Darth Vader crew and a ship firing Cluster Missiles killing itself between shots.

Same situation. Once a TLT or Cluster Missile has been started, it finishes regardless of whether the ship dies in between.
