Darth name generator fail...

By Ender07, in Game Masters

So I was trying to come up with an evil sounding name for my Sith Inquisitor yesterday and ran across a "Darth name generator." I figured I'd give it a shot, even though I wasn't using the "Darth" title due to the "rule of 2," it still had some cool evil names...

Then I got these results and questioned the person who built this in the first place...

Darth Broth?

Really?

What the heck kind of a name is Darth Broth?

“All fear Darth Broth, the Sith warrior who smells like soup!”

And Darth Crud?

"Oh crap, Darth Crud is coming! Good evening Darth Crap...Crud! I mean Crud...Crap!"

No mention of Darth Bradd, Dark Lord of High School Jocks?

Or Darth Foukkorn...the Dark Lord who hates vegetables in cob form and nu metal bands.

Or Darth Wesley, aka the Dread Pirate Roberts...

Or Darth Wesley, aka the Dread Pirate Roberts...

I always upvote Princess Bride.

Well Darth Vader supposedly means Dark Father, Revan didn't seem to bother?

So describe the characters, what's their characteristic?

What makes them different from say an Inquisitor?

What's Sith for Dark Hunter or Dark Overseer?

Heck why not skip it altogether and start off by making them more mysterious and go by something else so they don't have Vader & Sidious coming after them?

Darth Agrurr needs to be moved over to the Plot Humor thread, like now!!!

I can see some adventurous young...adventurers going through an old tomb. They see what appears to be an ancient fallen Jedi Knight. It looks like he had some mortal wound and died here from from his injuries centuries ago. Using his own blood, he left a message for those that would come after him, written on the tomb wall.

"Verily, I failed in my valiant, but nonththelss totally fruitless and vain attempt to apprehend or destroy this foul and despicable creature that the Councel has sent me to either apprehend or destroy. As I lay in hear...um, sorry, I mean, here in agony, I can't help help but wonder if the Councel knew they were sending to me my very death, if so why would they ask to pick up some blue milk on the way back from apprehending or destroying the most vile and foul creature known as Darth Agruur..."

And the hand written blood note on the wall ends. You can't quite tell if the hand written blood note was meant to stop there or keep going, Or if he had actually had written out his own death gurgle...

Also, if the BBEG monologues, and no one is around to here it, did he really monologue?

Oh man, my Darth names are only a touch better than those!

Darth Vizaj

Darth Arcanum

Darth Rohnyn

Darth Zarr

Darth Avarus

Not exactly subtle am I, eh?

Now we know how the dutch feel about Vader... Or how we norwegians and scandinavians feel when D&D publish adventures with the totaly cool and awesome warriors with the deadly and fearless barbarians named ... what my boring, dry math-teacher was called. or my sleepy grandmothers name, or that lame wedding dj at my friends wedding...

"Darth what?"

"Darth Agruur..."

"That can't be right! That's not a name!"

"Well that's what it says! It's written in blood, maybe he died while he was writing that part."

"Look, if he died, he wouldn't write "agruur," he would just say it!"

"Maybe he was dictating?"

"Oh shut up!"

I went with

Darth Havoc (Sith-Lord),

Lord Under (Inquisitor)

Lord Destro (Sith Assassin)

and Darth Vengance (Sith Lord)

Well my Bonus is: German Table so most english pronounced Names sound cool... even a Lord Under... (ok the name was given so my players would laught at him... bevor he showed them why this was his name... don´t under estimate Lord Under

Not a Darth, but an NPC in an upcoming campaign of mine, set about 250 years after RotJ, is the curator of a Jedi Historical Studies curriculum. I've "cast" Tom Baker as the Curator at the end of "The Day of the Doctor" as this professor, whose name is Meddyg Ciethre which, translated, means "Doctor Four."

Nice names, but where are all the words that, with an added "in", become actual English language words?

Said "pronounced" just has to sound english and my German players are happy ;)

But which added in are you calling for... some how faild my deception check...

btw: once again sorry for any spelling and/or grammar done by my worse dice luck on translationchecks

Darth Conceivable.

I once played in a Dark Side online game (using D20 Saga). I picked up a Latin dictionary, and then decided on the name Darth Cervix.

It sounded really convincing at the time, and the dictionary mentioned "Strength" to be the translation of "Cervix". Of course, there is also a medical meaning to the word, where it describes a part of the female human anatomy within the reproductive organs... Suddenly the name got a completely different feel.

And I didn't even need an online name generator for that, just a crappy old dictionary without an integrated medical encyclopedia.

Eww. :o

My group once ran a game where we were all Emperor's Hands, and we each chose a Latin word as a codename. I can't recall what everyone else had, but mine was Sicarius (assassin)

Foryunately, there is very little 'Eww' about it, as it is, in fact, the entrance to the uterus. Like I said, just a part of the inner anatomy. Still, I would advise against using Google while in images mode. Some of those medical schematics are difficult, others are graphic.

The dialogue with Darth Cervix almost writes itself.

"Foolish Jedi. My path has been long and painful, but the ritual is now nearly complete. My might is now fully dilated, and soon I shall bring a new creature, new power into this Galaxy! It will rule your every moment, both waking and in your fitful slumber. As I feed it with my own life essence, you will wallow in its vile excretions, and yet sing its praises. Prepare yourself, Jedi, for diaper duty!"

I'd use an English to Latin... that comes in pretty useful. I got evil/bane = malum, bite = mordetis, poison = venunum, death = mortem, shadow = umbra (but you'd get wiseass players saying Darth Umbrella I reckon)

Bastardised latin too.. bastardized languages worked for Warhammer :D

Every canon Darth has a name that is either part of a word that sounds evil or powerful, or is the word itself.

  • Darth Vader (Invader)
  • Darth Sidious (Insidious)
  • Darth Tyranus (Tyrant)
  • Darth Plagueis (Plague)
  • Darth Maul and Darth Bane (Words that suggest strength)

As a result, I try to find words or variations of words that represent either power or evil.

  • Darth Vigor
  • Darth Dominus (Dominant)
  • Darth Supremis (Supreme)
  • Darth Vile
  • Darth Lash
  • Darth Malignus (Malignant)

And so on.

Darth Vader, where 'Vader' is the Dutch word for 'father'.

Lucas himself is said to have mentioned this once, fitting with his TESB reveal by this menacing Darth.

I don't think there is much evil in a father (where I have had a normal one, fortunately).

I can see the other examples, though.

Which would be all well and good if that reveal wasn't brought to the table by Leigh Brackett during the writing of ESB. Just another example of Lucas retconning the filmmaking process to give the impression that Star Wars was Vader's story all along.

Being Dutch, I like the 'Vader' reference. ;)

However,I can see how retconning and 'hind-sight-interviews' can alter people's perceptions of stuff, like a single scene all the way up to an entire line of films. We all know the prequels to be the story of the rise, and the fall to the Dark Side, of Anakin Skywalker, finally turned Darth Vader. It seems to be written specifically just to shift the focus of the original trilogy from that farmboy-turned-hero-Luke (and friends) towards the redemption of said Darth Vader.
