Easy to run fun lists

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing

What kind of lists do you think would be easy to run but fun at same time? Minimal upgrades or upgrades easy to remember (VI, EU etc).

I think running Brobots for example is a pretty complex list, lots of upgrades, possible combos.

What lists are fun and easy?

For new players, fat turrets with Predator are very easy. Chewbacca with Predator, Oicunn with Predator, etc.

If you want to teach proper flying skills and focus on ships that have to maintain arcs, basic Tie Fighters and X-Wings are great for tutorial purposes.

The definitive answer really kind of depends on your definition of fun.

Poe Dameron (31)

Predator (3)
R2-D2 (4)
Autothrusters (2)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Total: 100

It has a name people know, it has a Turret which helps someone who struggles at keeping arc but also teaches the importance of movement due to the range 1 bubble. Poe's Regen is super forgiving if you mess up and it has a lot of ships on the board, a thing people love.

Palp Aces.

It has Vader, it has Soontir, a lot of really cool ships and really cool names. It's super forgiving with all the padding of tokens and Palp. It takes a real good player to fly it well, but a new player can fly it semi - competently and still have a lot of fun with it.

Boba Fett (Scum) (39)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Gunner (5)
Inertial Dampeners (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Dengar (33)
Veteran Instincts (1)
K4 Security Droid (3)
Unhinged Astromech (1)
Punishing One (12)
Total: 100

It's got Boba Fett, who doesn't love Boba fett? Who also doesn't love moving after you opponent, and rolling a lot of dice, and rerolling a lot of dice?! A new player will most likely be in range 1 of an enemy anyways, might as well reward them for it with Boba's awesome ability ;) Firespray is also an awesome teacher of arcs.

I feel like this defeats the WHOLE question the OP asked.

Go with generics then if you want simple. BBBBZ is great for beginners, or you can swap out some Xs for Bs. Or if you want easy imperial, 3 tempests with AC and either Vader or Fel tossed in.

2x blue squadron, ion cannon, FCS

2x Gold squadron, ion turret

4x shuttle with Engine.

Everything else is easy after you master this!

2x Red squad vets with PTL + IA

Poe + Predator + R5P9 + AT

How does what I said defeat the question while your lists somehow answer it? That was an uncalled for response.

I gave reasons to why the lists I posted were good, straight forward and forgiving while also fun.

What lists are fun and easy?

Biggs with R4D6, integrated astromech, 2x B-wings Daggers and whichever of the three you find easier:

Stresshog Y: TLT with R3-A2 with title.

T-70 Red Squad Vet*

T-70 Blue Squadron with R3-A2 and integrated

Nera Dantels* (basically just running her as a PS 5 B)

2 Z-95 Talas**

The starred are my favorites since they are PS3+ and I think that will be useful in the coming meta...

Simple?
PWTs, Regen OPoe

But so far the best list that always got attention of new players (just because new players enjoy RUNNING HEADLONG AT THE ENEMY)
is

Poe Dameron (31)

Lone Wolf (2)
R5-P9 (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
R2 Astromech (1)
BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
R2 Astromech (1)
BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Total: 100

These threads always lead to people posting complex lists, they may seem simple to experienced players but new comers can be overwhelmed by lots of different rules, abilities and upgrades they need to remember.

Best way to make it simple is to either reduce upgrades that are situational or keep number of ships low. One large ship with a couple of upgrades and a second small ship with no upgrades is a good start. This way as they are only moving a couple of ships they have time to check upgrades without getting lost in rules.

AP Ob vs Rookie R2D2?

Rofl.

Oh my gods. Why does the core set game take SOOOO long to finish.

easiest list around. 4 tie advanced with title card and acc corrector and one basic tie prototype. They are all at PS2 so you have flexibility in movement. and with the acc corrector all you have to do is focus and or evade every turn..

Fast and easy, 4 novice T 70 with R2 + IA. Same PS move first soeasy to see where to go, boost and good hitting

While forgiving, they are not simple. It's not fun when you look back and realize the battle could of gone completely differently had you remembered you could Palatine that asteroid or critical effect. There are a lot of interactions going on in those lists that I know for a fact new players will forget, even shield regening is forgotten by some more experienced players. So yes, I do believe you missed what the OP asked, not completely, no, but not adequately.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I think Hujoe nailed it: more upgrades makes for more chances of forgetting some important or critical component of your list.

My main X wing friend consistently runs brobots and he's forgetting upgrades all the time. Brobots in particular have a lot of options and moving parts to keep in mind as you are flying.

I myself made a rookie mistake at my first SC and forgot I mean totally forgot my integrated Astromech upgrade that would have kept my ships in the game longer.

So I guess the less that can be forgotten, the better!

I like suggestion of 4xT-70s with R2 Astromechs and IM. Enough ships to move around in formation, enough HP to withstand a lot of damage, and great action options.

I think a lot of us beginners who go crazy and buy everything miss out on a lot of the fundamentals that those who started in wave 1-3 have.

I think for a while I want to try to strip it back to basics and concentrate on the best part of the game: flying.

So the key to this request is easy AND FUN. I submit the following:

Pick a ship or two that you want to play with. Then keep your list at or near the same PS. By keeping it to only 1 or two ship types and the same (or nearly the same) PS this will cut down on mistakes caused by forgetting what to do when.

3 or 4 X-wings is a great place to start. Not a Rebel scum? Here is my beginner's Imperial list:

2x Royal Guard + PTL

2x Saber + Opportunist

This list teaches strategy, synergy, and the mechanics of the game. It's also very fun in a friendly setting.

Here is the first list a ran at a tournament (made the top 4) many years ago:

Gaven

Biggs

Blue Sqd.+E2+Jan Ors

Blue Sqd.+FCS

It's a simple list that worked very well against Biggs and 3 B-wings (and then later against BBBBZ). Every round Biggs will gain a focus and an Evade token. The first tournament I ran this list, Biggs only died once. It's still a good list, but with new cards out, it could be changed and made even better. Such as:

Gaven

Biggs + R3-A2 + IA

Blue Sqd.+E2+Jan Ors

Blue Sqd.

Or

Gaven + R2 + IA

Biggs + R2 + IA

Blue Sqd.+E2+Jan Ors

Rookie + R2 + IA

I've tried a few of teaching this game to people, and honestly the best way is to make a two ship list with no upgrades (usually an ace and a generic). Make 2 lists like this, keeping them relatively equal in points, and try for as many different pilot skills as possible. If you ships at the same PS, make sure one list is a point or two cheaper to show off initiative.

Examples:

Corran, Rookie Pilot

Gand Findsman, Xizor

This teaches moving, shooting, PS order, pilot abilities, and every single action except cloak and slam. From there add in upgrades and eventually move to full squads.

Now if you are talking about an easy squad with minimal extra rules to reference for someone who already knows the basics, I'd say 4 blue squadrons with advanced sensors, 5 Khiraxz, or for something a little more complicated:

Poe

VI, R5-P9, autothrusters

2 Red Squadron vets with predator and autothrusters.

Poe is actually pretty straightforward since he usually wants to focus, and the red vets are easy to use, autothrusters helps if they go against turrets or engage at range 3. Pretty much anything that doesn't require chaining action combos should be ok.

I gave a friend of mine this list:

Wedge Antilles (31)
X-Wing (29), BB-8 (2)

Poe Dameron (35)
T-70 X-Wing (31), R2-D2 (4)

Outer Rim Smuggler (33)
YT-1300 (27), Gunner (5), Millennium Falcon (1)

99 points

It has some tricks but not too many, and it puts a Falcon on the board which makes things more fun.

3x imperial firespray. Roll dice outta 2 arcs. No upgrades. Easy to explain actions. Decent dial. Iconic ship for buy in.

I think for a while I want to try to strip it back to basics and concentrate on the best part of the game: flying.

I can definitely see getting overwhelmed by jumping in to everything at once! You might try just turning back the clock and build with only wave 1 stuff until you're comfortable with that level of complexity, then add back your wave 2 stuff, and so on.

I'd actually recommend starting with a TIE swarm (6 named up to 8 generic) or semi-swarm (3 or 4 named or generic) with a heavy/Ace like firespray or Vader. These combinations can be wave 1-2 and fill a squad without many upgrades easily enough but still have pilot abilities to keep track of and excite. I started learning the basics with these myself.

I'm new, and everyone I play with is even newer! What I'm going to try to do is run 1 ace with generics. I think generics by themselves is boring, but 1 tricked out ace with generics isn't too hard to do.

That's a fantastic first step toward a more complex list. A Fat Han list is a great first Rebels list. Soontir and a Howl mini-swarm of Ties is a fun Imperial list. My favorite scum list is also easy to fly: Kath and 2 BSE Starvipers.

My wife was very please with trying to list out, actually she just bought most wanted and a Y-Wing just to test out that list. (we proxy upgrades)

Though Poe proofed to be not very forgiving when Jax bumps into his aft. She lost in the end to my triple ace list. Soontir Fel had still one hull left when the time limit run out and her last standing Y-Wing could not finish him in the last turn. Very fun game, and after we finished Soontirs Interceptor actually did leave the table, crashed to the ground and ripped off his left solar panel. A fitting end for the Baron after winning the game with one hull left. *grin*

Next time she wants to replace the Z95 with an A-Wing and maybe add one BTL-A4 title.
