"Logic? My God, the man's talking about logic! We're talking about universal Armageddon. You green-blooded, inhuman—"
I figured this quote would sum up the Wave III posts I've read over the past week or so...
So now I'ma make me a thread...because I can! and because I have a Venator! and I roll with the dark lord!
No...in all seriousness I wanted to toss out a few thoughts:
1. Why only two small ships clearly inspired scale wise from Rebellion?
Simple - they are easy to make and put out.
With all the glorious work FFG has done recently, it's easy to see they put too much on the factories plate and frankly there aren't enough tiny Asian hands to paint your star destroyers fast enough. These flotillas are easy to churn out, they have a simple wash and they roll through packaging...in short...this isn't a wave it's an appetizer.
2. So what is really the issue?
I think the overall issue here is quality control.
If you notice how the quality on ships is starting to decrease with reprints, restocks and such I think it's fair to say FFG has put the breaks on Armada as a whole until they can get the quality of their ships back up to spec. Something like this hit me when I unboxed my Assault Frigate and saw it looked nothing like what was advertised...in fact I've had issues with star destroyers with bad washes applied and the paint isn't all too hot. The Gladiator looks mega plain as well.
3. The hell is FFG really up to?
Is he not the chosen one, the one who brings balance to the force?
I really think this wave is going to bring some more balance to several fleets. For starters being able to repair ships in combat will keep them around an extra turn and perhaps make certain lists a little less scary when they cannot simply throw a handful of dice and wipe you out. Now granted I don't have the full details...but I'm seeing where these ships can go and I'm think ECM boats that can mess with black dice throwers and screw with long range comm's.
Oh and I'm pretty sure if these ships work out in their support roles...it'll bring the real fun stuff: Interdictors
4. Why should I be happy with this offering?
Life's too short to be pissed off over toy soldiers.
A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away (the Flames of War message board) I went down a very dark path of getting pissed off over toy soldiers, meta balancing, model quality to the point I alienated myself from a good group of gamers, I also made myself fall outta love with a game I put my heart and soul into for nearly five years. From that experience I got into Armada with a new perspective: Enjoy the little things.
Now I admit when I saw this dinky wave, I instantly went to the dark side of the gamer...then I realized "hey this could reaaaaaaally shake things up" and then looking into the concept of flotillas more I began to see the possibilities. Granted I'm sure bomber command is going to be a royal pain in the bantha...but it introduces a support ship role that this game doesn't have. Fragile ships will stick around longer and we may very well see this game evolve into something even more indepth.
Armada is basically space chess, there is no "one list to rule them all" the game doesn't end before your foe rolls dice (I have seen that happen and it was stomach churning.)
Also I totally intend to paint a GR75 all tagged up like Dr. Venture's X1 after the Monarch's boys got done with it.
