Stuck in a rut, can't seem to find "me" in a build

By Daefish, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey guys -

I'm thinking I'm getting stuck in a rut trying to find a squad I like that I can fly well. I've played in a few store weekly events and one store championship - I don't know if I've actually 100-X anyone, though I've gotten more points than the other person in a few games.

I like flying large base ships, namely Brobots (I didn't actually know they were top tier when I got them, I just thought their linked abilities sounded awesome) and recently been trying to find a place for Dengar next to a brobot or a Firespray.

I have one fairly regular opponent who plays Imperial Aces, specifically Palpmobile + Vader + Inquisitor. I can't seem to ever beat him even though I've gotten close. I'm wondering if I should be having him play other lists so I can get practice against other things, or if by improving my skills to eventually beat him with Aces will help me against other list.

My meta locally is actually really heavy with TLTs and Brobots (I'm really not that good with them). The TLTs are the most disheartening build to go against (no offense to TLT players on this forum, I just don't like them personally as a squad). I would consider running one or two, but not a whole squad of them.

I'm heavy with ships in Rebel and Scum, lighter with Imperials, though I do have imp aces + phantom + defender.

I'm either really just bad at this game (I'm like 0-7 against the aces with double large ships) or my matchup isn't great. I'm afriad I'm going to get about 50 responses saying "lolz brobots win against aces every day u r bad" but if that's the reality then that's the reality.

Here's my current build:

PILOTS

Dengar (56)
JumpMaster 5000 (33), Push the Limit (3), K4 Security Droid (3), Unhinged Astromech (1), Punishing One (12), Engine Upgrade (4)

IG88-B (44)
Aggressor (36), Fire-Control System (2), “Mangler” Cannon (4), Autothrusters (2)

Palp aces is a good tough list against just about everything. I think you should balance up your points a bit. Adding glitter, crackshot and hlc would really make IGB strong. Right now against you I think id try to bury Dengar and coast.

I actually did have IG88-B built as you said above. He got smoked pretty quickly, I think it was partially some terrible dice rolling on my part but that's not always going to be the case. I do know one hit was 3 green blanks against 4 hits so that took him to half right away. I'd give it another shot though.

I think my problem with the Aces is I don't want to joust necessarily but aces force the joust and I can't recover fast enough or protect myself enough. I'm not sold on two large ships with lower health/shield (17 total points on these two ships vs ghost having 16 points alone). I know the agi dice are better on these but I don't know the math enough to know if more agi dice are better or worse than more health.

On average, they should last about the same length of time (0 agi vs more agi). They just are not as consistent as 0 agi. Im a fan of 0 agi right now because I feel like defense dice without autothrusters is not very good against TLT.

VI on igb may be worth it against aces, even if you only tie the inquisitor PS. EPT's are too good not to be used imo.

Have you tried killing palpatine first? Does he split his forces on deployment?

So last night, the first game, palp was in the back left corner, angled towards the middle (as I faced it, his right corner as he faced).

He put the other two aces about midway through the map and turn one blew towards me with a 5speed, plus I think boosting. I had turned left to go after the shuttle and it was hard for me to recover from that.

In my defense I did have some opportunities to win, attacked one ace with the other one in my primary arc so I could use Dengar's return fire against it but it didn't end up working out.

Against PalpAces, I'm used to Boba/IG-B. PS10 Boba is amazing to catch Soontir, although there's still Vader. I use Gunner in this config to strip tokens and increase damage output.

With Dengar, if you're looking to build specifically against Aces, I'd go with:

Dengar (33)

  • Veteran Instincts (1)
  • Engine Upgrade (4)
  • K4 Security Droid (3)
  • Punishing One (12)
  • Unhinged Astromech (1)

= 54 pts

Boba Fett (39)

  • Veteran Instincts (1)
  • Engine Upgrade (4)
  • Tactician (2)

= 46 pts

PS11 and 10 give you the jump on Soontir. Boba with Tactician should cripple Soontir, even Vader, without much hassle. Only focus your flying on Dengar's ability whenever you can get Boba out of harm's way.

An alternative is flying a Bumpmaster, Palob and a high hitting ace, but it's considerably more difficult to fly against Aces.

dont feel bad. i lose with palp aces pretty regularly to my buddies scum list.

you could try it.....

he uses kath scarlett with all the proxy bombies and whistles

2x syndicae thugs with autoblaster turrets and some sort of droid. i think unhinged.

thats it.

whatever i try to dance around ......the other half messes me up while i nibble at all the hit points.

The more I take a look at Ghost and the shuttle the more I like them. Not necessarily paired together but even as individual ships.

What about something like this:

PILOTS

Lothal Rebel (42)
VCX-100 (35), Fire-Control System (2), Hera Syndulla (1), Engine Upgrade (4)

Chewbacca (58)
YT-1300 (42), Predator (3), C-3PO (3), Gunner (5), Millennium Falcon (1), Engine Upgrade (4)

Basically Fan Chewie paried with a 16 health beatstick.

I know how you feel with losing all the time. The only opponent I face on a regular basis is SeaLemons, and when we first started I swear I didn't win a game for 3 months. I got really disheartened. Then we went to our first tournament and the little bugger went 5-0 in swiss! It could just be a lack of balance between your skills. Having him fly some lists he isn't familiar with may help.

If you like large-based scum ships, try throwing in jumpmasters. Here's my build
