The only table in my house that I can play X-Wing on (I live with a low-level hoarder) is curved at the edges, but it has a leaf in the middle, how do I deploy?
Question about tables.

This is why you don't use Canadian tables.
Just play however you want. Just have fun
I'm over with tables.
Rescaling everything.
Making bases 1 foot square....pegs 4 feet tall....giant plywood templates ...using all the old AMT and ertl model kits and setting up rocks in the driveway.
This is going to be the best summer EVER
I would suggest getting a cardboard box for moving, keep it collapsed, then place it over the table. This should give you a bit of over hang but, you can then just put your mat on top, and bodda Bing, badda boom. Done.

Hey man, leave him alone!
It's not his fault they only have metric tables in Canada.

Go to closest hardware store and ask them to cut you a 3x3 mdf board.
Or you could do something like this:

Eerm, I don't have a mat, that table is the closest thing to a 3x3 space in the house.

That sounds cool, can I come over and help?

do the hardware store idea above.. get a 3x3 piece of wood cut, then spray black and do some brush spray stars and some toothbrush nebulae.. problem solved.. and something for the hoarder to keep around too.. bahahaha
go purchase one of those trifold craft boards. they cost like 6 bucks at walmart. they unfold to a 4x3 and if you get black you have a playing surface as well.
now my problem is the HEIGHT of the typical store "Magic" table.. waaaay to low. matter of fact i think I tweaked my back from a recent SC. being 6'3" and constantly having to lean down!! wish the tables were "Pub" height or even "Counter height" when i build my new super deluxe table you can be sure it will be taller than those cheapo plastic card tables with a 4x4 board placed on top!!lol
Put some sheet metal on a wall, attach magnets to EVERYTHING, and throw your table away.
Years ago I built a folding board/mat and its STILL awesome:
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1110198/my-mat-solution
Works great! And I'm sure improvements can be made. A friend of mine took the same materials and built one that has a Z fold in it. Hard to explain, but its 3x3 when flat, and there are 5 folds in the board so when its folded up its 1 foot x 1.5 foot. Much more compact than mine, but both fit in my mini cooper just fine.
I went to Ikea and bought a table that could hold a 3x6 space to play on as well as some extra space. Barring that I would buy a 4x8 sheet of MDF or 4x4 if you want to skip epic, that way you have a little extra space to set cards and such on.
You have two options. Just play with it as is, which is fine. You could even bend the deployment zones a bit if you wanted to.
Or for a fairly small amount of money get a 3x3 or better 3x4 sheet of MFD or similar, paint it black and use that. I'd recommend putting some of those little felt dots on one side so it doesn't scratch anything up.
a 3x4 sheet and those dots would cost maybe $10.
Get a 3x3 piece of cheapo plywood.
Spray it black.
Instant gaming table.
And if you get the really thin ones (no less than 6mm though) they don't weigh much either.
When you don't play, you can just put it along a wall or behind a sofa or something.
Alternatively, if you make it a really nice space painting (which is easier than you'd think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sjSzgaO-UQ) you can hang it on a wall as a painting ![]()
The cheap piece of plywood or mdf board really works for a home battle board.
Recommend you make it 3.5x3.5 foot though and mark out the play area. It gives you room for cards, templates and dice outside the play area.
Bah no one is going to throw you into X-wing jail if you don't play on a properly sized table. Just put some painters tape down on the table for some boundaries and have fun.
I had a similar problem when I wanted to start playing epic on my table. We home crafted a folding board with a detachable extension, so it would fit in my trunk. If you don't need it to be portable, just a flat piece of board will do.
And of course, for super casual play, you can use any size space you want, but understandable if that's not what you want to do.

YEP!
You'll need a cooler full of your favorite summer beverage. And probably some bug spray.
And I think I'll move the location to a nice black parking lot. We'll need the extra room if anyone wants to use an epic ship and straps a giant cardboard raider to a car trailer.

But we have to play when the store is closed, or we have a problem, Tie swarms are another one.
I got two pieces of 2'x4' mdf then plotted and painted a 6" border all the way around the board. Not only do I have a regulation play area I have extra space for tokens, cards, templates, and beer. I could hinge them together with blind hinges but I prefer to keep them separate. A few strips of non-skid tape strategically placed on the back keeps them from moving relative to each other.

Might throw him in a trash compactor though.
