X wing with WWII tanks

By petercooman123, in X-Wing

Looks interesting... and the price doesn't seem too bad. Not huge on having to assemble/paint, but it's not crazy. The rules do seem a bit stripped down, and very little dice modification from the looks of it may mean it has the "Risk" issue - if your opponent rolls well constantly and you don't, you may be screwed more often than not.

Will watch.

We have yet to see a lot of the upgrades so the dice modification might change based on those.

I used to own some FoW tanks. The assembly is ridiculously easy for them. I'll likely magentize my turrets for some so they can be assembled as either option as needed/wanted

Yea, my only worry there is that certain upgrades become "Auto-Includes". Like if there was a Predator-like effect, I could see that being just insane in a game where you can't do dice modification without it.

It's part of the beauty of X-Wing. I can try to get more actions and Target Lock more frequently, or I can equip an upgrade where I don't need to. The players have a choice, and each is valid. You also have the choice of "do I spend the focus here?" versus an upgrade which gives you something regularly.

The game seems almost too simple in a way. Move -> Shoot -> Repair with the hardest decision is how to move and what to shoot. That may not be a bad thing, but my biased X-Wing mind feels like it lacks some depth there.

How is this NOT some type of copyright infringement or something. Did FFG license out the game mechanics?

I`m not complaining, it just seems extremely fishy.

I'm not sure the core mechanics of X-Wing could be copyrighted.

You get to assemble and paint your own stuff (wish X-wing had this as an option.)

After 20 years of Warhammer/et al the assembled and painted aspect of X-wing was a big draw for me (and my immediate group).

I am the same, as a player first and a modeller/painter about 1 millionth, I enjoy that I can buy a ship, open it and play it at the store if I want.

Then there are the people who use 10 coats just for bases who look down upon your snow cam basecoat as you trounce them into the dirt in Warhammer.

while there are similarities with initiative the systems are very different. the only protection for games out there is patents and those are really hard to get and enforce and are mostly about the physicality of a thing used to play the game (click bases, card tapping).

i said i wish it was an option in x-wing. i'm quite happy the game comes pre painted but i would love to buy some cheaper raw plastics to paint.

The Char B1 isn't even in it, ugh.

If they stick to the Flames of War formula with different eras, there might be some Char B1 tanks coming as an early war expansion

Yeah, but then a bunch of a-holes will already have late war stuff and won't want to switch over. Oh look I lost another tank to an 88. Germans OP pls nerf. :P

I think the Americans and Soviets did a pretty bang up job of nerfing the Germans. No need for a nerf. L2firebombdresden

All that said, I'm not recalling seeing that much similarity between this and x-wing. X-wing's signature strength is the movement system, everything else is fairly generic game mechanics and sales model. But this doesn't have the hidden maneuver selection, doesn't have the maneuver templates, units don't vary in how maneuverable they are.

Would be kinda cool to play it with the x-wing maneuver dials and movement tokens.

You'd have more and less maneuverable tanks that way :D

Modelling could be fun. Adding camo bits and such. I'm with the crowd on this:opening a snub fighter and playing out of the chute is a tremendous relief for modelling fatigue. That and do I really need to add ANOTHER miniature game to my catalog? Probably not.

I will be giving this game a hard look. I already own a bunch of painted 15mm tanks since the A&A minis era so I will probably be quick to gather a sizable force if the game catches on here.

FFG produces X-Wing under license (of some description) from Wings of War which originated its manoeuvre system (aka the Flight Path system), as does D&D Attack Wing, Star Trek Attack Wing, and so on. So even if it was the same system, it wouldn't be up to FFG to defend that system.

Looks very promising.

And yet there's several hundred other tank rulesets already in use... and probably twice as many manufacturers of said tanks from cheap to ridiculous. Not impressed...

Didn't they already nerf the Germans, back in the 40s?

nah, germans just ran out of miniatures.

and guess what? USSR had lots of miniatures xD

and US had even more being shipped and some more at the printer

(but yep, nerfing germans is a sick sport visible in every game that has them)

If it doesn't have traverse and directional damage (rear armour is weaker) they've missed at least two tricks.

It is easier to do damage on the sides and rear. Rules page 12.

wonder if this will go to the modern age with full on NBC. APFSDS rounds/ hellfires etc... also i am NOT a fan of the having to paint your own stuff. with X-wing you are assured a decent level of assembly and paint. with this game somebody who doesn't have painting skills or is just lazy will show up with naked tanks!! lol now if the Tanks are super cheap that could be different. maybe if they were 1/72 scale or near that. or better yet in the accepted 1/35 scale that most armor models are produced in. and make bigger templates and play out side. that would be kind of cool... i know they make 1/72 scale prepainted tank miniatures as i have a few.. Now what i think would be cool is if they made an Armada type game for Star Trek using the same ships from Attack wing. but i digress...

So just spotted this new game made by gale force 9 coming out in june. Everything about it just screams x wing!http://tanks.gf9games.com/HowToPlay/tabid/117/entryid/75/card-basics.aspx

They should have made it more ARMADISH to my taste. After all, the tank has an epic momentum.
This as well. Looking at the rules, you can go from speed 3 to a complete stop and back to speed 3 turn to turn. While this kind of stuff can be explained in a 3D-to-2D game (like X-wing) where the sudden change of speed can represent a vertical maneuver, it makes no sense in a tank game.

Really? Have you not heard of breaks?

I have been keeping a eye on this for a while now and Im totally stoked that it releases in a few weeks.

I really love the little model kits. Quite different from the old Flames stuff that I have.

And FYI guys, yes you could use your old Flames/other 15ml tanks but like X-wing you need the cards.

But it will be fairly cheap to buy into (again like X-wing) assuming 100pts is the norm here too then you will need between 3-6 vehicles.

Panther is 32

M4 is 20

As a few e.g's

Wow....this seems pretty cool. I own A LOT of German 15mm stuff. The only downside is I don't own anything else. I wonder if there is a way to buy or download the cards and templates without having to buy the minis. I really don't need more 15mm WWII.

I do know that FoW had a short version of their game they called World of Tanks. I think it's a great marketing scheme to get video gamers into mini gamers. My son's friend is 10 and loves WoT. He buys little toy tanks all the time. He would buy into this. Maybe I can get my son into more mini gaming? At least his friend will be off a screen for a short while...
