X wing with WWII tanks

By petercooman123, in X-Wing

It most certainly share quite a few game mechanics. As someone who plays Flames of War, this could be an interesting game to try. I have all the models after all!

I'm hyped for this! Key difrences are

lack of fireing arks for most things.

Movement of attacker and defender make attacks harder to hit.

Movement is not templated but uses a short ruler.

You get to assemble and paint your own stuff (wish X-wing had this as an option.)

The Char B1 isn't even in it, ugh.

Reading into it it has a lot of similarities but also subtle differences:

same:

-pre order shows vinyl game mats 36x36

-moving is made by template (but every one uses the same one)

-upgrades can be made to different locations like crew, engine etc..

-initiative works the same as pilot skill (move from low to high then shoot from high to low)

-shooting and defending is made by number of dice specific to vehicle

- expansions cost about 10$ and include the vehicle and some (unique) upgrades

- has normal damage and a critical damage deck

probably more but those are the most important

different:

-upgrades are kept secret untill you use them (they start the game face down)

- you don't choose direction and speed secretly, you just state what you do when it's your turn to move

-there is a command phase after move and shoot, shere you can repair damage

those are the most noteable differences.

This is an interesting game i think, will watch closely!

every thing is a turret, except for tank destoyers/assault guns, who can only target what is in front of them.

Interesting. What scale is this supposed to be? 15mm?

The Char B1 isn't even in it, ugh.

If they stick to the Flames of War formula with different eras, there might be some Char B1 tanks coming as an early war expansion

After 20 years of Warhammer/et al the assembled and painted aspect of X-wing was a big draw for me (and my immediate group).

Yes should be 15mm

That movement system is different.

That movement system is different.

Yeah, and it seems really weird.

From what I could understand of the movement, you're basically going to have to turn your tank every time you move :/

I've been following this game since announcement in December. It actually comes out in April. June is when the Soviets get added. It is 15 mm scale uses the same plastic minis as FoW.

No you can go straight too.

Yeah, maybe there's more to it than that, but it seemed like all moves involved placing the back of your tank flush against the arrow, which would mean there's no such thing as a directly forward movement...

Looks like a very simplified X-wing.

Yes you can put the front flush against the arrow too.

I think a lot of game companies around the world have watched the success of X-Wing with awe and thought "we must get ourselves some of this".

It's a good system for squad level conflict.

High skill will be even bigger where you don't have a secret planning phase, of course. That will prove significant.

Otherwise looks like the build aspect of x-wing with a simpler, more wargamer style movement. Of course, terrain might count for a lot more, and that's where the real meat could turn out to be, too...

Yeah, but then a bunch of a-holes will already have late war stuff and won't want to switch over. Oh look I lost another tank to an 88. Germans OP pls nerf. :P

That's not what the movement example says

"Then pick up the tank and place it anywhere along the Arrow squared up against the tail"

And the way the diagram shows it, you either turn, or are moving sideways. Very strange.

Looks interesting... and the price doesn't seem too bad. Not huge on having to assemble/paint, but it's not crazy. The rules do seem a bit stripped down, and very little dice modification from the looks of it may mean it has the "Risk" issue - if your opponent rolls well constantly and you don't, you may be screwed more often than not.

Will watch.

Tail of the arrow not the tank.

We have yet to see a lot of the upgrades so the dice modification might change based on those.

I used to own some FoW tanks. The assembly is ridiculously easy for them. I'll likely magentize my turrets for some so they can be assembled as either option as needed/wanted

Interesting. Will have to keep an eye on it.
