Sensors and scanners. The fluff and the mechanical.

By Djack, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello all! Was wondering if yall used any specific types of sensors or even specific radars and the like.

I've got things like:

Bio Sensors for some older technology, short of the full on Bio Scanning equipment. Able to pick up biological readings of up to x km, etc. Life Form scanners for speciality.

Ion Sensors for ionic readings. Ion storms, ion engines, weapons if they were large enough or maybe concealed or something.

Thermal Sensors for thermal readings, to pick up on all kinds of exerted or external heat.

Magnetic sensors to pick up on magnetism, maybe for resources on an asteroid.

Obviously I'm not writing anything too defined or detailed as the purpose of this post isn't about that as much as it is to maybe help me brainstorm some definitive systems, home brew or otherwise, for my sensor readers.

If you've got any suggestions or anything for other systems, it would be most appreciated. Especially if you've got an in game example or an idea like it.

Thank you!

Yep, check out Sturn's stuff for sure.

However, the scanners (at least the big ones on ships) in Star Wars appear to be mutli-purpose and cover the gambit of sensor needs. (Detection and ranging, energy sensors, mass analysis, geological sensors, thermal and magnetic equipment and on and on. More of the "less is more" dynamic so prevalent in this game.

Thank you both! It's not exactly what I had in mind, but this is a fantastic source of information and I believe I'd be better of adjusting myself with the sensors/scanners aspects to better fit to the provided resource. Appreciate yall!!

There are several handheld scanners throughout the Core books and supplements. Without a book in front of me, one of the hand scanners in Core is very generic. IIRC you could specify it was a scanner of a certain type. But, I don't think that is necessary if you are able to access supplements.

My Signals Intel document is about long-ranged vehicle or station sensors. Vehicle sensors in RAW are given broad descriptions of "Passive" or "Active" which I believe covers a long list of devices. Not just a radar dish.
