The joys of Game Preparation

Ok so a little bit of background…

Last session my players Xeverux (Falleen Trader), Hidi-Oshi (Nautolan Scout) & Janna Crow (Mandolorian Thief/Slicer/Gunslinger) travelled to Garel to complete a spice deal given to them by the Hutt Buaku Anjiliac. They’d got 75,000 credits worth of Tempest spice that they were to deliver to Buaku’s contact, the deal was that they complete the spice exchange & return the credits to Buaku where he’d pay them their cut of 10,000 credits… simple!!

Anyway, after arriving in the Garel system in their Dynamic Class freighter “The Echo Rising”, narrowly avoiding the Imperial Customs Inspection party finding the spice (conveniently hidden in their newly purchased smuggling compartments) they head off to complete the deal in the Warehouse district of the city.

Due to some pretty awful decisions by Xeverux, and some equally awful dice rolls on his part the deal went pear shaped really quickly as their buyer had been ambushed by a rival group of smugglers & his credits stolen. A firefight broke out between the PCs and the smugglers which ended with the Smugglers forcing to PCs to lay down their weapons whilst they loaded up a cargo skiff with Buaku’s spice. We ended the session as the smugglers sent a group of 4 goons to waylay the PCs so they could get away to their ship which was hidden in the canyons to the south of the city!

So... in preparation for the next session (last night) I’m thinking ok, we’ve got a gunfight with the goons & then they’ll be after the rival group of smugglers so I spend a considerable amount of time planning out what was in my opinion a fairly cool chase scene through the city, across the desert and into the canyons to the smugglers waiting ship… easy right! NOPE!

Once they’ve dealt with the goons (capturing one) my PCs decide to completely ignore the fact that the smugglers are getting away with both Buaku’s spice & the credits he was due!! Janna Crow does a quick reconnaissance of the warehouse and discovers a fortune in high end textiles due to be shipped to the lucrative markets of The Core Worlds… she then gets in touch with a contact and arranges for them to steal said textiles and arranges a 25% finder’s fee (pulling in around 25,000 (ish) for the crew)… clever I thought!!

Whilst this is happening Hidi-Oshi & Xeverux “question” their captive using their fists and the butt of a blaster carbine and find out where the rival smugglers have hidden their ship in canyons, they relieve him of the payment given to them by the rival smugglers and leave him tied up in the back of a speeder truck with his dead buddies!

They then decide to head back to The Echo Rising, they prep the ship (speedily) then take her up and over the canyons where they’ve been told the smugglers ship is hidden! After a number of sensor roles with far too many Triumphs for my liking they locate the smugglers ship, a YT1760 which is landed in one of the narrow shady canyons. They land The Echo, slice the security on the YT1760 (**** those Triumphs again) and Xeverux and Janna Crowe steal the ship whilst Hidi-Oshi waits for the smugglers to return. 15 minutes later they arrive on their skiff and speeder bikes and are forced to surrender or die when faced with Quad laser that they’ve recently had fitted on The Echo!

To cut a long story short the PC’s come away with a modified YT1760, 75,000 credits from the deal & the 75,000 credits that they can take back to Buaku for a hefty (whilst slimey) pat on the back and much kudos… plus the 25,000 that they stand to make from Janna Crow’s contact who stole the textiles for her when/if they return to Garel!

Awesome!!! Love this game.. even tho around 5 pages of prep went out the airlock :)

No how do I relieve them of all that cash…. Muahahahaha!!!

Do they have a group stronghold? They start at 50k credits and get more expensive as they upgrade... there are also modifications to be made to their newly aquired ship. Loads of ways to lose your money in this game :)

Your post pretty much encompasses everything I love about this game. I don't think I've ever had a game session plan survive contact with the players, but with other systems I would be actively stressing about all the prep gone down the drain, but I find that half the time I live for those moments where everything goes off the rails, but in an awesome way.

And as DiegoOnasi points out, there's plenty of ways to lose money in this system. I've found that even massive payouts only go so far because the PC's ambitions rise accordingly. I know that eventually my PCs will burn through that cash (often in the pursuit of bigger, better weapons), then their ship will get beat up and they'll need to enter into some sketchy job to pay that off (and usually they find a way to turn that sketchy job into a profit, meaning the cycle will start again).

I have to agree, in this session my prep went out of the window within about the first half hour of a 4 hour session! After the initial moments of internal panic I just ran with it & let the players direct where the action went! My group are all experience role players which also makes my job easier but I have to admit this has to have been my favourite session this far using Edge of the Empire where my plans have gone completely out the window :) The nice things is as well is that none of them had a clue I was winging it for most of the night!

Since the game the other night I've been getting a stream of texts off one of my players whose already planning what he wants to do next session :) It's got to be one of the most involving rpgs I've played!

I don't think I've ever had a game session plan survive contact with the players,

With three qualificationseparate for that session all despair related

1) Whenthe human enforcer (styled after a shadowrun street samurai) intimidated the muscle (including the corrupted sherrif) sent to intimidate them, I didn't expect the sheriff to get a despair on his fear check or the player to use that despair to make the sheriff $#!t his pants.

2) when the Droid gadgeteer with a jet pack crashed into the water trough

3) when the human enforcer dueling the other cyber samurai rolled a despair and fell off the roof of a second story building ending the duel early... only this last one ended up affecting future sessions (which only affected future sessions because it was after this session that the enforcer's player told me what he wanted his side story to be and I started his side story in the next session using a rematch with the cyber samurai that he had just previously lost to introduce the sidestory).

Other than that everything went exactly according to the plot plan (I didn't plan out every dice roll) and it was one of my players' favorite sessions

I once prepped a session in EotE where my group would steal an "ancient sports relic" from the captain of a space station (a la Deep Space 9) which was turned on it's head pretty quick.

The group boards the station, and the security officer advises them that weapons are not allowed on the promenade (ty Odo) to whit one of my "creative" players decides he doesn't like that rule and refuses to lay down his arms. Security take him into custody and takes away his blaster carbine and pistol, but they miss that he has a hidden wrist rocket on him.

They get to the security office and the PC manages to get out of security's grasp and then proceeds to threaten to blow them up...he aims and fires when they don't drop their weapons and gets a despair...soI madehim blow a hole in the hull of the brig and things start getting sucked into space!

They managed to get away but they had to find a new way to get back up to the station. They had to disguise themselves so security wouldn't recognize them, and still steal the baseball...I mean "ancient sports relic." *cough*

They get back on the station by stealing an ore freighter from the nearby planet, then steal some janitor-type outfits and hide in plain sight before befriending the owner/bartender from the local casino/bar.

When they finally steal the "relic," they realize they can't just leave nothing in its' place, so they "magically" find some paint and paint a stun grenade to look like a baseball and set it on the pedestal (ty destiny point).

This whole session was a giant "fly by the seat of my pants" kind of session, but it was memorable and fun as heck!
