Ships on the board before deployment - what would you do?

throw a fit and find another game, obviously. unreasonable requests be damned.

Flip Table is always an option :P

Okay so I know some people put their list out on the table so that their opponent could quickly go over the list you know check to make sure it is 100 or less points and not 101 points. Still in deployment I can see the confusion as trying to decide what ships are deployed and what ships are not. I also know some people like to use their ships to mark range 2 from the edge so that they know where to place obstacles.

There really is no harm in asking to move the ship in hand or ask them to be turned around facing the table edge so you know that those ships are not deployed.

Here's the really tricky thing about Vassal: the natural way to play is with your ships flying away from you, but if one player does that, the other has to play 'upside-down.' Especially for newer players, this can really throw them off. So in one tournament the convention was that you play side-to-side, so that neither player has an advantage.

Okay, so you've established sides, but you're so used to placing obstacles that you place them as if the bottom of the mat is your edge. Then, once all the asteroids are placed, your opponent takes their first ship from the table, and places it at range 1 of the left-edge of the mat. Your heart sinks as you realize that you've just placed asteroids in completely the wrong way for your squad!

To prevent this from happening, it is customary to place your ships between range 1 and 2 so as to mark which edge of the mat is your edge when placing asteroids. And for the most part, this custom solves the problem without issue.

There's a thought - would it be hard to add mirror and/or rotate modes to Vassal so if you did play uppy-downy ways the player playing from the top could flip it so he sees it as playing from the bottom?

I've thought about that, but I don't think the program is up for that; it's a very simple program.

This is the best thread I have read in a long, long time. The series of posts where mazzo and richard started interacting was pure gold. I swear they MUST be an old married couple for that sort of bickering to occur.

I'm disappointed that Richard seems to have taken a break though...

who else plays table top simulator and wants to get a game?? =)

(flip table is disabled, serious games plz. )

You're not the first person to say that! :P

Why doesn't everyone just put their ships and placed obstacles into the area between range 1 and range 2 like I do? It's an easy way to identify things that haven't been placed yet, and doesn't get in the way of anything.

Actually putting your entire squad into the actual asteroid placement area during asteroid placement is just weird.

Why doesn't everyone just place them outside the play area until it's time to deploy them like I do?

You may find there's no problem having them in the play area early, so may many others, but for myself it throws off my mental map of the board, that low level feeling of "he's coming from this direction", you know? If it puts some people off, why do it (if they've asked nicely not to)? Is it asking a lot to put them outside the play area?

I like when my opponent is off his game for small issues like that.. sorry if that's a problem, but it's not my issue if you have an issue with ships on the board.

when I game with people I usually set my ships in the starting area and then set my asteroids in the middle to start off the game. Then we each start setting our 'roids. if it bothers someone they can move them to the side ... once done we can start lining up the ships. I usually set up on one side or the other and draw my ships from where I set them originally, usually in the middle of the 1-2 range area center board.. I don't play on vassel and from some of the things I've heard, I'm glad I don't.. lol..

if this makes me a bad person.. maybe I am.. at a tourney recently I played a guy that requested I cut his damage deck as it was part of his 'ritual' for the game.. I said I don't cut decks.. he nearly begged me to do it, and stated I'm the only one to ever refuse him.. lol.. he lost and I was amused.. my buddy also at that tourney played him for the win.. also refused.. my buddy took the store championship that day haha.. a good time, but I could see the guy was still frazzled after all the games were done.. I suggest not letting people know you have an issue.. competition is tough sometimes.. and I do play to win, but in a fair manner, I'd never cheat to win.. but if something, like you mentioned, was a known thing.. I'm your nightmare.. I don't let anyone get under my skin..

I'm disappointed that Richard seems to have taken a break though...

Easy for you to say, but I don't get a break. I sit at the next desk to him 8 hours a day, 5 days a week!

In all seriousness though, I play at least a couple of evenings a week at a couple of local game stores with about twenty different people ranging in age from teenagers though to guys in their fifties. Not once to the best of my knowledge have I ever annoyed anyone nor have I ever been in an argument with any of them about X-Wing or anything else.

When I play with mazz0 though we end up bickering more often than not. Just saying.

where are you guys at, just curious.. I'm in the Chicago area

Fair enough, I won't go into whether that makes you a bad person or not, but if you're going to be like that I'll bring up the fact that it's against the rules. If there's a disagreement that can't be sorted out in a friendly manner, I assume you'll agree you should default to what's in the rules?

Tournament Rules, page 2:

1. Each player places his squad outside of the play area next to his assigned

player edge.

5. The player with initiative places the six unique asteroid tokens from his

core set next to the play area. He chooses one of these asteroid tokens

and places it into the play area. Then, his opponent chooses one of the

remaining asteroid tokens and places it into the play area. The players

continue to alternate until all six tokens have been placed. An asteroid

token cannot be placed at Range 1–2 of any edge of the play area or at

Range 1 of another asteroid token.

Six hours a day at most :P

At many tourneys and our game store we don't have all this extra room all the time on the side of the board.. but if you wanna be that guy, I can be that guy too.. lol.. I try to be friendly at games, and I'm usually having fun.. but if you want a TO to come over and make a snap decision.. so be it.. I just wanna play and it's easier to set everything in front of myself to get set up..

now the devils advocate in me comes out.. you have an issue with stuff on the board, what if your opponent has issues with things on the side.. or, maybe he has an OCD issue and needs his ships and 'roids on the table in a certain manner to keep his attention to the game.. what do you do then.. haha..

That all said, I'm usually not a huge ******* when I game with people, but I do like to set my opponent on edge if I know something bothers them.. I do have a friend that has OCD issues.. and I know I can throw him if I do something drastic.. lol.. we keep threatening to mess up his card folders and reorganize them for him. each time we get a new alt art card, he has to move all the cards down to fit in the new one, he can't just stack it with the regular one.. haha..

Edited by oneway

also.. Rule 5.. it's out of date.. we no longer do it that way at tourneys..

At many tourneys and our game store we don't have all this extra room all the time on the side of the board..

Totally understandable. Not an issue on Vassal.

but if you wanna be that guy, I can be that guy too

What guy? I want to be the guy who agrees things in a grown up, friendly manner designed to please everyone as much as possible, where it doesn't have to come down to what's in the rules. You're the one who specifically said you don't do that. I think we're both trying to be very different guys.

If we can't come to an agreement ourselves then I say default to what's in the rules. Do you disagree?

also.. Rule 5.. it's out of date.. we no longer do it that way at tourneys..

The fact you ignore a certain rule (for which you may have a good reason) doesn't make the rule out of date.

Edit: Oh I see, you meant the rule I quoted wasn't the most recent. You're right, but that part is...

Each player places their three unique asteroids and/or debris cloud

tokens next to the play area to form a pool of six obstacles. The

player with initiative chooses one of these obstacles and places it into

the play area. Then, the other player chooses one of the remaining

obstacles and places it into the play area. The players continue to

alternate until all six obstacles have been placed. An obstacle cannot

be placed at Range 1–2 of any edge of the play area or at Range 1 of

another obstacle.

...still there.

It's the start of the work day, and I'm arguing on the X-Wing forums. I think I will have a pretty good day, thank you! :P

any time.. haha..
