New to the Game so very 1st list!

By Trench Runner, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey All

have had one game using the starter set and naturally loved it !

I have picked up the starter set , TIE interceptor , TIE Defender and Firespray-31 with some extra cards (from a well know internet auction site...) . Will grab the Veterans Expansion when its out and add the TIE/D title change to Brath (to allow primary and secondary weapon to be fired)

This is basically made from what I have available. 100 points

Firespray - Kath Scarlet +Autoblaster +Veteran Instincts+ Gunner + Engine Upgrade

TIE/d - Brath +Ion Cannon +Predator+ Engine Upgrade

I literally have no idea how this will work and hope to get first game in this week. Is it a bad list? I have a few other upgrade cards to hand .

Have a rough idea of how the two could interact and hoping they complement a little.

Going to get some rebel ships as well at some point for a more swarmy feel

Can see a "must have one more ship syndrome" happening..

Thanks!

Welcome to the game!

Defenders are not easy to use! You have to fly them carefully and a lot of people end up putting them in too many enemy guns, thus killing off the defender before it can do good work. To avoid that, you have to be very good with positioning.

As to the list itself, I think there are some things you can cut:

Autoblaster on Kath is unnecessary. Its not a very good cannon, honestly. I suggest putting it back in the box ;)

Engine on Brath is not super necessary, although if you have the points it can be handy at times. Heavy Laser cannon + predator is an excellent pairing for Rexler. With only 2 ships, you need to do A LOT of damage. Unfortunately, the ion cannon is not going to cut it at this time. This will of course change when Imperial Veterans comes out (TIE/D makes a big difference!). Until then, use HLC or no cannon at all.

And once veterans comes out, TIE/d and tractor beam looks to be very nasty. Tractor a small ship into range one, 4 die attack with one less agility? Brutal. I think multi defender lists are going to show up once veterans hits.

But anyway, welcome to the game! As blade has said, autoblaster tends to be a trap card (one I fell for when I got my first B-Wing). Kath does fine with no cannon (or a mangler cannon, it guarantees a crit and thus can trigger her ability more often). The biggest problem for autoblaster is that most ships that can equip it already have 3 attack dice, meaning at range 1 they shoot with 4 with their primary. Autoblaster (even with the special rules) just isn't worth 5 points. Not knowing what extra cards you have (and FYI, you can say eBay here, it's not against the rules that I know of, it was usually GW that frowned on that back when they had forums, guess it just stuck with the community), you may not be able to fully kit him out, but Soontir Fel is a top notch ace for the empire right now. While his best wingman is emperor Palpatine (which requires investing in the Raider), he does great on his own or in a triple aces list (or in any list really).

Generally speaking, more ships is better than upgrades. I know your collection is limited, but even dropping the autoblaster, gunner, and ion cannon for an academy pilot to use as a blocker may be a little better.

That being said, welcome again and fly what you like!

Thanks for the warm welcome all and advice

I went for the Firespray as it just so cool looking, that's a good enough reason right?

Ok interesting that a 5point gun is a bit naff. The upgrade cards I have are form the starter set, TIE interceptor, TIE defender, B-Wing (I got a couple as the GF wants to play with them - she really likes b-wings for some reason) Firespray and I grabbed a couple of Engine Upgrades separately

In that case will give this a bash and then try that Soontir Fel chap as well

Firespray - Kath Scarlet +Veteran Instincts+ Engine Upgrade

TIE/d - Brath +Predator+ Engine Upgrade

TIE Obsidian Squdron Pilot

thanks!

A great purchase for you now is the Scum and Villany expansion set,

Is that the "Most Wanted" pack? I was thinking of the Imperial Aces pack instead is that worth picking up?

thanks again for the advice all

Firespray is the coolest ship in the game, so yes great purchase by you. However, the S&V Firespray is just all around better right now. It's by no means worthless for Imps but they tend to have so many better options when you start digging into it. S&V Boba Fett pairs great with about anything they have to offer and S&V Karth is a great beginner ship because buttfire is always fun to learn on.

As is however, I think the generic bounty hunter is the best Firespray as the points you are paying for the cooler named ones aren't worth their abilities really. Better to load up the cheaper one with the heavy cannon and gunner, and then maybe squeeze in a 3rd ship.

Imperial Aces is definitely worth getting and unless you're looking to change factions away from all those Empire ships you've bought don't worry about Most Wanted yet. The Firespray's are better for scum (sadly) but nothing else you own works with Scum. So keep on what you're doing sir, Aces gets you the rest of the Interceptor pilots you don't have and push the limit which is fantastic for many builds.

Really what you need to do is buy EVERYTHING!
