Help me make more mistakes

By drjkel, in X-Wing

I got into this game to play with my sons in November 2015. I got hooked, my oldest got hooked, the middle boy is somewhat interested, and the younger one is only allowed to watch for now (he's 2! and already pulled off a few TIEs' wings).

Many, many mistakes were made since ;)

We've been to 3 tournaments this year and it was a blast, though we didn't get too many wins. The oldest has expressed an interest in playing at a tournament, and I'm thinking he may be mature enough next winter or so. HoTAC is a big thing in our household right now, though we often have TIE/fo masquerading as TIE fighters.

I have a business trip to Washington coming up in early April and I sold my wife on the idea of "much cheaper ships, policies changing April 1st" and she ok'ed more buying! My plan is to fill out the mistakes I haven't made yet, that is the the Scyk, the Mist Hunter, and the epic ships, save the Tantive (only really missing R2-D2 crew). I still have some slight leeway left, both in my luggage and money-wise.

I want to play all three factions, my plan being to alternate which one I bring to tournaments, but in my games with adults, I've had much better success with imperials and scum, they work better for me.

My current plan was: TIE/fo (Comm relay and Juke), TIE Phantom (Tactician and FCS), and a TAP (to run Valen and the Inquisitor). I'm debating swapping two of those out for a second Punishing One though.

I'm open to being swayed by your arguments though! Help me make (more) mistakes!

UPDATE: My sons overruled my plans, they argued that getting the Tantive is more important than doubling up on some ships at this point. At least I set my priorities for future purchases at my FLGS! I'll be flying back 4 Epic ships in my carry-on, this promises to be fun, it's not like I need to bring clothes with me, right ;)

TIE FO has everythign in it on its own. i think the phantom does as well without having to buy to much else to go with it. same with the TAP as far as a I know. looks like 3 solid choices as a starter kit . go for it i say.

Oh, it's not starter at all ;) At this point, it's seconds! The only expansions I do have twice at the moment are the Aggressors, that just made sense.

Four hawks ... is a good way to go...

Out of curiosity, what does your collection look like at the moment?

One of each expansion except: epic ships, scyk, mist hunter, and tie interceptor (though I have a soontir card and cardboard).

It's just about the plastic crack at this point ;)

I love the Scyk, but it's generally thought to be the worst ship at the moment, so definitely pick up the Mist Hunter. But when you're that close to a full set, I can't imagine not just finishing it with the Scyk and Mist Hunter.

Gotta buy em all chinpokomon!

If anything, it's worth getting a Scyk to surprise your opponent by one-shotting his Soontir using a HLC on the rare occasion. I guess I was lucky as this happened on my first use of the ship (and then sadly never again).

You know, if your son plays, you might be able to work in things like birthday gifts for him to increase the family collection. Also, if he does good at something....or you need motivation for good behavior, you can buy him a new small ship as a prize for doing things right. Make all A's? Get him a ship.

THIS. THIS. THIS.

I have five kids, and four of them play this with me. I also have adults that play. Because I have a big family, I don't really have a lot of cash to buy everything all the time. But, I'm happy to scrape together a little bit here and there to buy a ship probably every couple weeks or so.

I did sell my wife on the reward thing, recently. I am redoing my own roof completely on my own, and it has three layers. HARD JOB. Anyways, because I'm saving us about $3,000 - it justifies buying a couple ships. I'll be getting the Decimator and the Jumpmaster soon!

The Scyk is not a needed ship. No key upgrades and a ship that is not very usable in the current game.

The Punishing One is great by itself or in 3s, I'm not sure a second is needed unless you want to get to the third for the current hot tournament list.

That said, the Tie/FO, the TAP and Phantom are all excellent imperial ships that have a lot of great stuff. (Tactician in the phantom!). The Mist Hunter is worth picking up for the great scum crew and tractor beam.

I think it would be a big mistake to delve into Epic. While it doesn't look like a different game than X-Wing, it certainly looks like a spin-off that takes longer to play, is more complicated, and obviously costs more.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you, so I decided to gradually get one of everything other than epic, trying to keep the factions balanced at the same time.

If you do want to dip your toe in epic, get the rebel transport and the Gozanti. Both come with more regular ships (x-wing and tie fighters) and unique pilots/upgrades. You can put those slightly larger ships on the table and fly 'em around! Or just sell off the epic portions of them if you don't like it and keep the upgraded x and ties.

But yeah, at least complete our your collection of 1 of everything. Even the Scyk is fun on the casual table!

Edit: as for the 2 year old... I'd suggest picking up a few of the micro machines ships, or maybe the hotwheels ones. MUCH softer plastic, a little harder to break. And they are close to the same scale so he'll feel like he's playing too!

At this point, I’m selling this as “dad’s game,” so that they can do something other than play X-wing once in a while. As it is, they spend most of their free time playing X-wing with their Hot Wheels ships, debating which upgrades would be good and how they interact. Though I love X-wing, there are other things out there ;)

The oldest has asked for some for his birthday and was denied this year. Then, two weeks later, my boss’ boss gave each of my sons a ship for Christmas (HWK, K-wing, and Punisher), so they already have theirs. The youngest is very insistent that I’m not allowed to use both HWKs without his permission, as the other one is his.

The Epic ships I’m getting (Gozanti, Raider, and Transport) are for the normal ships’ upgrades and to have cool display pieces. Though we’re likely to put them on the table at some point too.

That’s what I thought about the Punishing One. I plan to run Dengar with Boba or IG-B at my next tournament, but the Wolfpack is not something that tickles me.

The Scyk was to complete the set, and it’ll almost surely get included in a future Scum veterans pack, which should address its failings some. Similarly, at some point I may get the TIE interceptor pack just to have the complete roster of pilots.

Going forward, I’ll probably get a ship or two each month at the most (except for Imperial veterans, I need triple Defenders).

Thanks for the sanity check, I knew making more mistakes made sense ;)

I'm not sure if I agree with this. For one, there is always Cinematic. Epic is technically 300 vs 300 pts, but Cinematic is basically "whatever you want". So, you can use an epic ship in a 200 vs 200 game. Or make an unbalanced game with an objective that isn't kill all the other ships. The campaigns that come with the epic ships are also pretty cool and a lot of fun.

I second this. I loved the campaign play of Tantive IV. Two days of fun with my son!

Update:

I asked my sons' opinion, and they were of the view that getting a very cool Epic ship (the Tantive), even if we don't get many cards to use in tournaments, is a much better choice.

So we'll get 4 epic ships from CSI before Asmodee's price changes and keep on giving all our "normal ships" business to the FLGS.

This still allowed me to prioritize my next purchases ;)

Enjoy your Epic Ships! Generally I feel the Blockade Runner is poor value - UNLESS you have a play group that really wants to use it (which is the case for you).
