Jake Farrell and Push the Limit timing question

By sharrrp, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Okay so I feel pretty confident this works but I want to get a consensus ruling.

So first off the FAQ explicitly states that if you have Push the Limit and Experimental Interface equipped on the same ship both can be used to grant a total of three actions and then receive 2 stress tokens. The sequence goes like this:

1. Do an action.

2. Trigger PTL to perform an action on the action bar

3. Trigger EI, interrupting the flow of the PTL card and do an action on an upgrade card.

4. Receive a stress from EI completing it's resolution

5. Finish resolving PTL by receiving a second stress

You could also swap EI and PTL in the sequence. This works because the cards both say "DO your action thing" -space- "Then receive a stress" so there is a gap.

Now this is relevant because my actual question is about Jake's ability and timing with PTL. The exact text on Jake is this:

"After you perform a focus action or are assigned a focus token, you may perform a free boost or barrel roll action."

This is important because the A-Wing does not have Barrel Roll on it's action bar but it does have boost. So obviously Jake could Focus, Free Barrel Roll, PTL-Boost, take a stress, that's easy. However, there might be a situation where I would want to boost first then Barrel Roll. So based on the PTL/EI interaction it seems to me that I should be able to Boost, PTL-Focus, trigger Jake's ability interrupting the PTL for a free Barrel Roll, then finish resolving PTL and take a stress.

The only reason I'm not 100% sure is because the wording is slightly different. PTL/Ei both say "Do A; THEN; Do B" whereas Jake's ability says "After you do A you may do B" which other than Jake's power being optional mean basically the same thing in common speech but the "After" in there makes me wonder about the timing of the PTL resolution and initiating Jake's ability.

I did this in a Store Championship and after explaining my reasoning my opponent allowed it but I'm still not 100% sure I was right.

You played it correctly.

The wording on PtL and Jake is actually more similar than it looks at first glance

PtL: Once Per Round,

Jake: ____

PtL: after you perform an action,

Jake: After you perform a focus action or are assigned a focus token,

PtL: you may perform 1 free action shown in your action bar.

Jake: you may perform a free boost or barrel roll action.

PtL: Then receive 1 stress token.

Jake: ____

So if the "after" meant that Jake couldn't BR or boost when he PtL's for a focus, then the EI+PtL combo wouldn't work either.

So just like that combo:

1. Do an action.

2. Trigger PtL to perform a focus action.

3. Trigger Jake, interrupting the flow of the PtL card and do a barrel roll or boost action.

4. Jake is resolved.

5. Finish resolving PtL by receiving a stress token.

EDIT: Welcome to the forums!

Yep, Jake fits into the stack just as PTL and EI do, so PTL jake gets three actions for 1 stress, as long as one of them is focus triggering a BR or Boost.

Please confirm that this logic applies to the Tie Advanced Prototype title.

Yep.
