Marcy has Special Modifications...

Are Modders able to add hard points to a sil 4 starship with a talent?

Yes. There's a bottom-row talent that adds 2 Hard Points to the Signature Vehicle.

Edited by Maelora

Or none of the above?

I wouldn't say no to being Jaime Sommers.

I used to have that doll, Farrah Fawcett hair and all.

Are Modders able to add hard points to a sil 4 starship with a talent?

Yes. There's a bottom-row talent that adds 2 Hard Points to a vehicle of choice.

Ah, which covers a question I've always wondered about but never bothered to ask - if my outlaw tech can add hard points to vehicles. Looks like "no".

Buy into the Modder tree and it appears you'll be able to add them to your party's ship. That's probably the best we're going to ever get, though.

Although, I have home-brewed a brand new ship attachment to do exactly what you want! It's not official, obviously, but you can show it to your GM and see what they think:

IMPROVED CUSTOMIZATION MODIFICATIONS

PRICE: 1,000 x Silhouette

DESCRIPTION: By removing non-essential parts and systems, you increase the ability the ship to be further modified.

HARD POINT COST: 1.

BASE MODIFIERS: Increase ship's number of Customization Hard Points by 1.

MODIFICATIONS: None.

RARITY: 3.

Any chance we could get more infor on these:

All Terrain Legs

Amphibious mod

Decoy Buoy

Encrypted Computer

Enhanced Repulsorlift

Enhanced Hyperspace Shields

Gunner Droid Brain

Laser Focusing Array

Overcharged Ion Engines

Pseudo-Cloaking Device

Secondary Transponder

Security Measures

Slicing Computer

HARD POINT COST: 1.

BASE MODIFIERS: Increase ship's number of Customization Hard Points by 1.

If it costs one Hard Point and then adds one Hard Point, isn't that kinda redundant?

Overcharged Ion Engines

Speed +1, Handling -1, 3 HP required.

Shortcut and Tricky Target Talents as optional mods.

Sil 3 or less.

Kinda like eating celery. Or watching Donnie Darko.

Boy, are you guys gonna be cross when you realise I don't have the book and I'm just making all this up!

Good joke though, huh, guys?

Guys?

Yes, it's an entirely pointless waste of money.

That's the joke :P .

Never mind

So... an attachment that increases hard points by 1... that costs 1 hard point.

Huh?

We fell for it! :)

Eeek!

Okay, I was gonna tell you guys all about the new 'No Disintegrations' Bounty Hunter splatbook that I also have, but now I'm not gonna tell you because you were mean to me :(

Wait, yours is called No Disintegrations? Mine is called All the Disintegrations.

Huh.

Wait, yours is called No Disintegrations? Mine is called All the Disintegrations.

Huh.

Mine is called, "All Your Bounty Are Belong To Us."

How's the art?

The usual high FFG standards. Good to see some of the pictures of the ships, because that's what players ask about.

Nice picture of a twi'lek chilling with her droid BFF.

The picture of the Besalisk in the species chapter looks... different, slimmer somehow. I assume it's a female? I don't know, and I don't wanna know!

Wait, yours is called No Disintegrations? Mine is called All the Disintegrations.

You obviously have a cheap, fan-made knock-off, about as legit as the faux lightsaber I had in 1979! :)

Marcy, thanks for everything you've posted. I have a few quick questions, if you don't mind.

My group is playing a game set in the Firefly 'Verse but using the rules-set from Star Wars. Two of our players are techies: one is a slicer while the other is a cowardly mechanic played by a very creative player.

For the slicer: what does the "slicing computer" do? Are there any other specialized pieces of gear? Right now, he has a "personalized hacking rig" that we statted on the fly.

For the cowardly mechanic with the creative player: He loves to do stuff on-the-fly in the middle of a scene, like turning off the lights or hotwiring the electrical wiring to help the other players electrocute the mooks who are outnumbering them... Any talents that would lend themselves to that sort of approach?

Glad to help.

Slicing is expanded on quite a bit. The system they suggested is kind of a 'decker duel' between the attacker and the one defending the system. There are also security programs of various difficulties.

There's s special series of actions; Access System, Activate Security Program, Disable Security Program, Enact Command (lets you play with whatever tech the system is controlling), Expel User, Lockdown, Trace User, and there's a whole page devoted to spending threat, advantage and the like. I think it's as close as we'll get to Matrix rules, and it would be easy to build on or write adventures for, I think.

As for equipment, there's three new tools: Dataspike, Ealewon A212 Tracing Console, and Signature Modulation Pad. The first is a kind of one-shot tool to make it easier to disable security. The second is a large terminal that makes it easier to defend a system. The third is a kind of cyberdeck that makes it harder to trace you.

There are actually general rules for building 'gadgets' that would probably help a tech character making customised tools.

For the guy who likes to do stuff on the fly... The 'Contraption' talent is always nice, but the Signature Ability 'Inventive Creation' might also suit your needs.

Also, the 'One Check Combat Resolution' rules on EoE page 324 can be good for this - that need not end up in killing your foes - turning off the lights or dropping them down a trash compactor shaft can end the combat just as easily as gunfire. It's a narrative game, and I do this all the time with our tech, BeeDee. There's always vehicles or buildings or something close by that can be used with Computers or Mechanics.

You don't have to get into specifics, but how does FFG handle the Cyberpunk 2020 "The Netrunner does awesome Cyberspace hacker stuff while the rest of the party watches him roll dice for an evening" problem?

I would think this could be solved by rolling a slicing engagement into a normal combat encounter. They all use the same turns, it's just you're focusing on two encounters at once.

But perhaps Special Modifications has some more specific wisdom to upload into our brains.

I'm not sure. We used to play a LOT of Shadowrun, and I tended to do the decking runs between the adventures, just one on one. If we'd had email then, that would have been perfect!

Oh man, that takes me back. "Okay, you guys all get a lunch break. Netrunner, come over here for a bit."

I like how later Shadowrun and Eclipse Phase made hacking & cracking more of an Augmented Reality paradigm, it allowed a cohesive play experience.

Thanks for the repsonse, Marcy. One thing that we were hoping for with the Mechanic... Since ship-to-ship combat isn't especially prevalent in Firefly (it's more about running away), Solid Repairs is a largely useless talent for the character. We were hoping there might be some sort of "Innovative Solutions" (for lack of a better term) talent in SPECIAL MODIFICATIONS that we might be able to replace it with, I actually got as far as pitching a few custom ideas, then we decided to wait to see what the book might have. Looks like there's nothing like that?
