Help me entering Wave 2 (list creation)

By Elkerlyc, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hi everyone,

Background (feel free to skip)

While I have played wave 1 I have not been able to make time for any more Armada after the immediate release.

Despite it being a most excellent game it was hard to fit in my rather busy schedule.

(X-wing, Flames of War, Game of Thrones & Star Wars LCG, work, wife, sleep)

Wave 1 I played rebels, mostly double assault frigate plus a corvette, backed up by some A-wings. so initially I leaned towards trying imperials this time but alas; the ISD was out of stock and will arrive AFTER the tournament.

The question at hand;

What list would you recommend to me? Bearing in mind that I am rusty (at best) with Armada game mechanics.

Coming weekend there is a small armada tournament.

What better place/timing to rekindle the Armada flame?

I need a simple-to-play list. I do like to think I have a good grasp of tactics (a lot of war-game experience) but let's make things not hard on me please.

I have each and every expansion once with 3 notable exceptions:

1) No ISD (yet; was out of stock)

2) 2x assault frigate

3) 2x squadrons (goes for both rebels and imperials though)

I am leaning to a rebel list (lack of ISD was the clincher) but also note I had more experience with AF lists.

Any and all help/tips/suggestions is much appreciated.

Thanks a bunch in advance.

I'll be the first to admit, I don't play Rebels often, in fact, I haven't played Rebels. But, I did my best, and came up with something that looks kinda like this:

Fleet for Elkerlyc
Author: ianediger

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 393/400

Commander: General Rieekan

Assault Objective: Most Wanted
Defense Objective: Hyperspace Assault
Navigation Objective: Minefields

[ flagship ] MC80 Command Cruiser (106 points)
- General Rieekan ( 30 points)
- Home One ( 7 points)
- Intel Officer ( 7 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
- XI7 Turbolasers ( 6 points)

Nebulon-B Support Refit (51 points)
- Salvation ( 7 points)
- XX-9 Turbolasers ( 5 points)

Assault Frigate Mark II B (72 points)
- Gunnery Team ( 7 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)

1 Jan Ors ( 19 points)
3 X-Wing Squadrons ( 39 points)

1 Dutch Vander (16 points)

Fleet created with Armada Warlords

Please note: I suck at creating Rebel lists (see: above the list).

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go take a shower and play a game on Vassal to restore my Imperial pride. ;)

Edit: Realized I left out Dutch, added him in. Otherwise, you'd be sitting pretty at 377, which is a hell of a bid. ;)

Buy an MC-80 to get Ackbar and a Rogues and Villains pack. Run AFG x2 and a Neb B with Yavaris. Add Boosted Coms, and run a bunch of squadrons. Alternately drop the Yavaris and the Rogues and Villains pack and run 3 AFG and Ackbar and Squadrons. If you have TRCs, use those too. Simple list. Powerful. Squadron game requires some skill to fly.

Line your AFGs up like this

--> --> -->

and start them at speed 2.

Digesting what has been said how about the following?

Points: 390/400 (willing to spend a few more points, just not sure on what)

Assault Objective: Advanced Gunnery
Defense Objective: Hyperspace Assault
Navigation Objective: Minefields

[ flagship ] MC80 Assault Cruiser (114 points)
- Admiral Ackbar ( 38 points)

Assault Frigate Mark II B (72 points)
- XI7 Turbolasers ( 6 points) -> ideally I'd give this to my other AF but I seem to have only one copy of this card.

Assault Frigate Mark II B (72 points)

CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- Jainas Light ( 2 points)
- Leia Organa ( 3 points)

4 A-Wing Squadrons ( 44 points)

[edit] ; I tried to make this list rather n00b friendly. Leia for correcting some planning mistakes and as few as possible upgrades giving me less chance to forget them.

Thoughts?

Drop the MC-80 to a Command version and add ECMs to it. This will also allow it to squadron command all the A-wings.

Is the extra squadron you can command worth the loss of one red die?

Is the extra squadron you can command worth the loss of one red die?

No, but being able to protect Ackbar with ECM is. For this reason I'd also put Lando or Raymus on the MC80. Lando for damage reduction, Raymus for increased engineering power. (plus he means you can store nav tokens instead of having to spam this command)

To be pedantic, it also depends. 1 non bomber black dice is more potent than a single red dice.

Could you upgrade teh CR90B to a CR90A? Ackbar side dice wont activate until you have a target at blue range on the CR90b, whereas the CR90A will allow you to shoot 3 red die out of the side (assuming its not obstructed or Jaina)

Dropping the turboslasers, upgrading the Corvette from B to A plus adding ECM to the flagship makes the following:

1 • MC80 Command Cruiser - Admiral Ackbar - Electronic Countermeasures (151)
2 • CR90 Corellian Corvette A - Leia Organa - Jaina's Light (49)
3 • Assault Frigate Mark II B (72)
4 • Assault Frigate Mark II B (72)
5 • A-wing Squadron (11)
6 • A-wing Squadron (11)
7 • A-wing Squadron (11)
8 • A-wing Squadron (11)

Leaving 12 points for some upgrade or another.

I am still looking at the XI7 turbolasers. (well; looking at everything but it is so much to digest atm)

Looks good.

For your last upgrade either XI7 or Engine techs on the MC80, TRC on the CR90, or gunnery teams on an AF-II

Thanks for all the feedback thus far.

2 remaining questions;

1) how important is a points bid? ATM I look at either a 5 or 6 point bid. Is that even remotely enough?

2) Thoughts on missions? I picked 3 earlier on but that was more of a guesstimate;

Assault Objective: Advanced Gunnery
Defense Objective: Hyperspace Assault
Navigation Objective: Minefields

Usually, the bid depends on your local meta. In my area, I can get away with a three point bid. But if I go somewhere else, a three point bid might always get me second player.

And this early in the morning, I'll be crap making tactical decisions, so I won't currently comment on your objectives.

It depends on the meta like the above poster said. At a big event I went to I was under bid twice on my 10 point bid out of 5 matches. One guy bid 11 and one guy bid 12. Going first can be pretty huge but I think it depends on your list how awkward going second can be.

Going first can be pretty huge but I think it depends on your list how awkward going second can be.

That has to do with objectives I guess?

Some pointers on those?

Some lists really like to go first. 5 ship builds with a fast killer like Demolisher + 4 raiders or MC30 + 4 Nebs/CR90 thrive on it being able to delay the killer ship until after all enemies have activated then speed it into a double arc situation. In the next turn it thrashes a target and speeds away. Generally speaking Imperials prefer first turn and Ackbar broadside lists aren't really too bothered. With a 3-7 point bid you should be fine giving you the choice some times and on others your opponent may give you the first or second player that you would have chosen.

Advanced Gunnery: makes a lot of sense for your MC80. Probably so powerful that nobody will ever select it...

Dangerous Territory: is a nice blue objective damaging enemy ships if they want to claim tokens.

Fire Lanes: might be a nice yellow objective since you have 3 big ships with good long range red dice (even though Ackbar doesn't count for claiming objectives) and decent firing arcs. Contested outpost can be a blander version but it does tie you to a particular location more than the spread out tokens of fire lanes.

Just a quick run-down on what I ended up with and a very brief report how it worked.

I took:

• MC80 Assault Cruiser - General Dodonna - Electronic Countermeasures - Enhanced Armament (151)
• Assault Frigate Mark II B - Paragon (77)
• Assault Frigate Mark II B - XI7 Turbolasers (78)
• CR90 Corellian Corvette B - Leia Organa - Jaina's Light (44)

• A-wing Squadron (11) x4 = 44

First game vs rebel; he had also an MC80, an MC30 and two corvettes, Han Solo and Dash Rendar (or the ship)

We exchanged squadrons in effect but I traded capitals poorly, losing both space hippo's for the corvettes.

I made some bad decisions on top of rather poor dice. Choosing to go second was a very poor decision this game.

Second game vs 4x Victory Star Destroyers, all with a gunnery team and Motti (plus perhaps some other small tidbit?)

This game went pretty smooth all things considered. Hyperspace assaulted the Paragon slightly behind Motti who was on the flank flying straight towards my MC80 and the second space hippo. My A-wings had a field day and fired dem black dice after my capitals stripped away shields. Motti went down first, a second Victory followed albeit that he took the non-titled AF with him.

Third game vs an ISD (Screed, Relentless, Montferrat plus other bits I forgot) a Victory class II (nekkid) and a Gladiator (pimped to move and shoot and all sorts of extra black dice) Last but not least 2 bombers, an IG88 and a Firespray.

This guy had stomped all before him and ended up winning the tournament.

But...

I won. :)

I opted to go first and could catch his Gladiator before unleashing his potential in turn 2, from then on I could batter his ISD.

Who went down in turn 5. He had left a limping Vic II and a mauled IG88 in exchange for my plucky A-wings and the Paragon.

He ended up wining the tournament still due to him scoring more points in his games.

But I don't mind. too much. ;)

So. . . I am not going to recommend anything. In all honesty, it won't help you much if I did. It's not that you are not a good player or not, it is the fact that you need the experience first.

So instead, my one piece of advice. Test, everything. Gain that experience and find what works for you.

My Advice, Buy an isd... At this. Point you will realise the POWER OF THE DAARK SIDE! And want another ISD no problem... Now you will notice the Cookies are REALLY good so you will want a Third ISD...Problem is that you have probably ran out of budget but, no worries Simply Sell that Pickel on a Stick and a couple of the Potatoes the rebals refer to as "ships"...with newly acquired funds buy a Third ISD... Now abandon all ties to the Rebellion and begin massing a fleet so powerful no one would EVER cross you and Overthrow Palpatine And become A THE GALACTIC EMPEROR!!!
