Gonk while using Experimental Interface and PTL

So it appears that using Experimental Interface and PTL is legal. Just results in two stress tokens being applied. My question, can you see a situation in which in a Jumpmaster, it would make since to use these two upgrades in order to automatically gain a shield and an action? You would be in trouble for a few rounds, but the Jumpmasters Turret and good green left turns could help out. Thoughts?

I don't think this could happen as after you PTL you receive a stress, which means you can no longer take actions, as such Experimental Interface could not be triggered as you can't per for any actions, even free actions when stressed.

This was just posted by a guy on my local FB X-Wing Group:

Interesting ruling from Frank Brooks at FFG.

Rules Question:
Hi X-wing Miniatures rules question: The new 'Gonk' card has two possible effects on it. Can both actions be used in the same turn via Experimental Interface? Or is the action 'Gonk', preventing it being used twice under the 'same action' rule.

You are correct, since both actions are “Gonk” actions, you cannot do both (add and remove) actions during the same round.

That's news to me.

I don't think this could happen as after you PTL you receive a stress, which means you can no longer take actions, as such Experimental Interface could not be triggered as you can't per for any actions, even free actions when stressed.

This is incorrect; there's a nested actions tack in X-Wing, so in theory a JM5K properly equipped could do as follows:

Take a focus action

- trigger Push the Limit to take a Barrel Roll action

-- Trigger Experimental Interface to take a GONK action

-- Gain a stress from EI

- Gain a stress from PTL.

Or of course, GONK to take a shield, PTL to do an action from your bar, EI to GONK the shield onto the ship, then gain two stress.

Apparently Frank thinks you can't do that. That doesn't seem quite right to me, but what do I know. It would be good to get an FAQ on that. I'm really surprised there hasn't been one already TBH, it seems like the kind of thing that would come up in playtest.

And TBH, if they had been intended to be the same action, why wasn't the card written Action: you may either take a shield... or assign a shield... etc?

That doesn't seem right. You cannot perform the same action or upgrade card action more than once per round. The 'Gonk' has 2 separate actions with 2 separate effects. I do not see how these actions are related other than being printed on the same card. I've got a whole action bar on all of my ship cards and I'm allowed to perform more than one of those actions per turn. Why couldn't I do this with 'Gonk'?
