A buddy and I had our first actual game of Armada yesterday evening using only the starter box and the learning scenario, with no upgrades on ships and no objectives. We had a blast (pun pun) and he's strongly tempted to get into Armada himself. The Imperials were victorious, destroying both Rebel ships and 2 X-Wing flights for the loss of 2 TIE Fighter flights and a heavily damaged VSD, over the full 6 turns. Just goes to show you don't need the newest shiniest cards or models to have a good time.
First game
Great! Have you found a local group to play with yet? If you have not looked, I would recommend trying to find a FLGS or other group to play with, as that is a good way to see what ships you want to purchase. Often times experienced players will let you borrow their ships so you can do a 400 point game.

I'd even argue the game is more fun without all the later super effective card combo's you can put on ships.
I actually love the combos. The learning scenario is fun the first time through, but man, barely even scratches the surface.

Yeah, but having taught the game.to a lot of people, the manuever/firing arcs mechanics need to be second nature before you even think about upgrades.

For tournament play those combos are so very important to eek out as much performance as possible from your ships.
For casual play tho, you're totally right. I think for new players especially it helps a lot to throw out a force, keep it simple and focus on chucking dice and flying. Makes for a crazy good time.
Play is super casual right now but if our FLGS runs a tourney we might get more serious
we found that Armada seems to have some of the depth that we found lacking in X-Wing. Only ever played a couple of games of the latter.
We have been playing the game for something like 10 times at our company game club, and I agree. The base game is actually pretty good as is, and even without the cards.

Have fun with it and learn the mechanics. Once you get those down, raise the point value and start putting in upgrades.
