Focus when no defendants left

Hi all

First post on this forum.

I was wondering, if a defendant loses all of his units so that none are left to defend and the attacker still has ready attackers that can only deal unit damage, does he have to focus these without dealing any damage or can they be withdrawn from battle and stay ready?

Per the rule book on Resolving Strikes, pg. 20:

A player does not have the option to pass during this
step. If he has at least one ready participating unit, it
must focus to strike.
It does not matter that there are no targets for the Combat Icons, it still focuses to Strike.
