ID tokens - time for a change?

By hismhs, in X-Wing

Hi all,

Who'd like FFG to stop giving us number ID tokens with each new release, and instead start providing us with some more pleasingly thematic squadron designations instead?

For the Empire, what about 'Mu 1', 'Mu 2' and 'Mu 3' etc., as introduced by the Tie Fighter series of PC games? (Repeat with 'Alpha', 'Beta', Gamma', 'Delta', 'Omicron', etc. etc.)

For the Rebels, what about 'Red 1', 'Red 2', 'Red 3' etc. (repeat with 'Gold', 'Blue', 'Green' etc. etc.)

For Scum, suitably intimidating call-signs such as 'Scimitar', 'Dagger', 'Wampa', 'Gundark', etc. etc.

To me, having number ID tokens in the fifties and sixties seems utterly daft.

What think ye?

I don't think those fit on the token very well.

I won't be happy until I have a full set of 70s for my ID tokens.

[This post is completely tongue-in-cheek.]

I'm a big fan of matching ID tokens to Target Lock tokens

I just use blue target lock tokens.

I agree.

L70ETC.... oh wait... wrong game...

I'm fine with numbers and there are a lot of letter designations with acrylics. If you want Red 1-5+ get some Acrylic ones that are Red with the numbers. Alpha, Beta, etc are fine with letters in my book. I could see some that had some iconic figures on the tokens for some pilots, but they have to be very distinctive or it won't work very well...

Sometimes I end up using the cool looking mission ID token (the smuggler one from the Falcon) if I have just one ship to tell apart. I'd be okay with some symbol based tokens that didn't use numbers. Aurebesh ID tokens would be really rad!

Nothing says you can't paint over the number token, or paint them white/lite grey and make your own "nose art" decals. Then seal with spray varnish.

I don't think it matters much because nobody flies 50 identical ships at once.

That said, the TL token idea works very well.

unnecessary, and potentially confusing.. Empire has a Wampa.. and Scimitars.. rebels have daggers.. you see where I'm going here.. that said.. paint over the numbers with your own call signs, and have the unique tokens at the game.. this system is easy and works.. also... I don;t use any above 9, so.. 1 through 9 is fine for me..

Honestly, tokens that are just a single block of colour would make like loads easier. You could automatically see which fighter is which, without spending time having to work it out.

I used 33 and 34 in my last tournament since it represented the squad points on both of those ships.

That's how you could use your tokens in the 50's or even 60's.

It makes the calculation of points destroyed quicker at the end of the game and you can figure out half points pretty quick too.

I made these for the bases of my X-Wings. Used in place of numbered tokens. You get the idea ....

Yes. I know these are for named unique pilots which are easy to ID by their base plates. But nothing is stopping you from creating your own individual images based on helmet designs.

Colourblind people might disagree...

Good point, hadn't thought of that. Perhaps coloured tokens with high contrast numbers in the middle. Best of both worlds?

I just made my own up. I base painted them first. I printed out an icon or picture on a color printer and then used a glue stick. I also made some with 40k decals.

I like the idea, but I do not think it's feasible with the token as it is, unless FFG did a total overhaul.

I think simple things like the colored bases and the existing ID tokens make sense, but obviously you are free to make some yourself. I wouldn't mind if the token was a bit bigger and had names like that. Or if there was an additional token/plastic piece which would add the name with the existing number tokens attaching to it. Would add some flavor.

I would prefer it if they stop wasting resources to give me tokens that I already have hundreds of. ID tokens, target locks, stress, focus, evade, crit, ion, all of them. Just release an accessories kit and stop wasting resources putting this in the expansions.

I understand. But you have hundreds of these tokens because you have bought several expansions and possibly multiples. How many did you have when you bought your first expansion?

I like the fact that each expansion comes with everything you need to field it .. and multiple ID tokens give us the spares to manipulate into something more personal. I do understand it is a waste of resources though when we have so many, though I'd be reluctant to buy an accessories kit.

Yeah, I did that in my last one with 21, 29, and 50.

Interesting timing. There is a seller on Easy (who makes some great Acrylic tokens in case you are looking) that has come up with an interesting idea for ship ID and target lock.

Its a combination of a numbered sleeve for your ship card, a clear overlay that has the same number for your ship base, and a target lock token with the same number.
