Hawk Feeds Poe?

By Bozman, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So i'm new to X-Wing and wanted to try something using the HWK as I don't see it out there in many lists.

My thought was that Kyle and Poe would synergize well as Kyle can feed Poe them focus tokens all game. My first list was just tying to use those two and then fit something extra.

100 pts

Poe Dameron

R5-P9, VI, Autothrusters

Kyle Katarn

Blaster Turret, Recon Specialist, Moldy Crow

Red Squad Vet

R2-D2, Autothrusters

But then I realized how fragile the HWK can be that maybe I should go with a different build and came up with the below.

Poe Dameron

R5-P9, VI, Autothrusters

Kyle Katarn

TLT, Jan Ors, Moldy Crow

Biggs

R2-D2, Integrated Astromech

Idea here is to have Biggs take the heat off Kyle. Biggs has R2-D2 which gives him sustainability and with Jan Ors, Biggs gets evade tokens. I have 2 points left and thought about giving Poe Weapons Guidance, but not sure if the tech upgrade is worth the 2 points.

So, any ideas? Thanks!

Accept that Biggs is going to die, but if you are flying this type of situation, you might consider the following:

Poe Dameron. With a change in the landscape and as you are flying Jan Ors, consider adding Comm Relay and swapping Veteran Instincts for Juke. This makes Poe even more survivable than normal and isn't something you can do if you do not have Jan to pass the initial Evade token. Feel free to keep handing focus tokens to Poe from Kyle if needed, though Biggs may get as much use out of them as Poe will (cause, most of the time Poe won't have to spend the focus token, he just has to make sure he gets one each time for dice modification and potential regeneration).

Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors looks good together but will die soon after Biggs does.

Biggs. Drop R2-D2 in favor of R4-D6 to help weather the very big canons pointed his way. Blocking damage is often as important as attempting to regenerate it the next turn. You won't be able to save Biggs, but taking the points off of him to beef up Poe is very useful in this one very situational squad (aka, don't try this on Poe without Jan Ors). Let Jan pass Evade tokens if possible to Biggs for the extra survivability.

If you find you are having trouble with controlling your opponents, you might think of putting the Ion Cannon on Kyle instead of the TLT. Either is fine, just will be influenced by what you find yourself flying against.

If you are having luck with Biggs being survivable, then keep doing it. If he dies a lot (and most of the time expect he will), this is a way to maximize your end game guy without gimping up your squad. And honestly, Poe should be a beast as long as you don't land on asteroids when carrying an evade and a focus token and should never spend either of them in normal rounds unless it is a matter of death (cause once you lose that evade token without Jan on the board, you have a PS8 pilot with 5 points of dead weight on his neck).

Interesting, never thought to use the Comms Relay/Juke combo with Poe/Jan. Have you ever run it? Seems so unexpected it could be used with devastating results.

As for Biggs, my objective was to keep Biggs close to Kyle and Poe stays within the 3 range to get the focus as needed. That way both Poe and Biggs and soak damage.

I haven't... I am running Poe and Red Ace with the Stresshog. I pick up an evade on Red Ace through damage (hopefully an asteroid... though I have yet to do it out of 6 games). I really like having that synergy, but I would consider it if I could free up the points for Jan somewhere that wasn't on a HWK-290... the Stressbot is hard enough to keep alive and with 2 Regen T70's, the HWK is Target Number 1! It is my preference, but having Jan already in a list with Poe, it is something I would really try for.

If you want Jan, but are concerned about the survival of a Hwk, you can try a B-wing.

T-70 X-Wing: •Poe Dameron (36)

Autothrusters (2)

Adaptability +1 (0)

•R5-P9 (3)

T-70 X-Wing: •"Red Ace" (38)

Autothrusters (2)

•R2-D2 (4)

Comm Relay (3)

B-Wing: Blue Squadron Pilot (25)

B-Wing/E2 (1)

•Jan Ors (2)

Total: 99/100

You could swap AT off of Red Ace for IA to give Poe Comm Relay.

B wing's a nice idea, but I really wanted to test out the Hawk. The idea behind the list is to have a Kyle in the Hawk give Poe focus, that way when you get those three eyeball rolls with Poe, you can spend your focus and still have one for R5-P9.

I played your 2nd list in a Store Championship on Saturday and placed 3rd going 3-1 with a first Rd bye and losing in the first cut game, although I know someone that won a Store Championship that features 31 players with BB-8 on Poe and Predator on Kyle.

Haven't play tested it yet but I have put this together

Bandit squadZ's x2

Poe

VI,R5-P9, comm relay, AT

Kyle

TLT, Jan Ors, Moldy Crow, Stealth Device

I like it, definitely worth testing - Another idea is to take out stealth device and replace a bandit with a prototype pilot with chardaan refit.

This allows you to have a high maneuverable blocker that can be annoying to pilots that are trying to get to Kyle, but this would definitely require some good flying

I could see the A-wing as a good blocker.

But with SD on the hawk if you have a decent build up of focus then you should be able to keep the hawk around a decent amount of time. Plus the Jan just convert focus as needed.

I would like to test both ideas soon and see which blocker works better with the list

I completely understand and get it. Just don't think stealth device is good since once you get hit, you're back to being SOL and that could very well be on the first attack run with one bad roll. I don't like to be dependent on a one and done ability when you can use those points on something else.

Regardless, definitely test away!

I just Kyle with Jan Ors crew and TLT to support Poe and Red Ace in a tournament and it did pretty well. Yes the HWK is squishy and tends to die but between TLT fire and token support, it is too dangerous for your opponent to ignore. That leaves you with 2 regening ships by the time the HWK has gone down and hopefully a fairly weakened enemy.

"Kyle Feeds Poe"? Good idea!

Jake Farrel can gain benefits from Kyle too.
