I've seen a friend and now seen an article on a website set up a large base at a 45 degree angle. I was under the impression the base had to be within range one of the end of the board.

Is the below legal for an initial placement?

Yes, as long as it's touching the player edge.

Edit: it's in the Rules Reference, page 13, Large Ships, third bullet point. (VanorDM beat me to the reference.)

Large ships can extend past the range 1 line.

From the RRG page 13.

During setup, a large ship’s base may extend outside of Range 1 (or a mission’s specified setup area) as long as it fills the length of that area. A

large ship cannot be placed with any portion of its base outside the play area.

Oh wow, I completely missed this rule. I'm really glad I ran into that article.
