EU made Canon

By Mackaywarrior, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I have been spending some time getting re-familiar with the new Star Wars canon (reading the comics, new books, etc) and I am starting to feel like there may be more EU canonized then previously thought. Not everything can be made canon in a book but most of it could be.

For starters (and probably the reason most of us are on this forum) The 10 Book X-wing series still seem like canon. Nothing seems to be contradicted these books and the fact that the First Order and Snoke act like an imperial warlord makes me think the legends of Wraith Squadron and Rogue Squadron are more than just bed time stories in the Star Wars Universe. A lot of us played the rogue squadron games and I can't imagine Disney is going to tear that rug from under us. In my mind, the 10 X-Wing Books are still canon.

The Han Solo Trilogy seems to be the one most at risk these days. In the Star Wars comics they hint towards the bounty that is on his head but with the Han movie rumored to come out it is safe to assume a lot of that trilogy will be rewritten. Rey's conversation with Finn in VII seem to support this when both of them know different stories about Han Solo. It means a lot of the galaxy doesn't know the real story of Han Solo. However, give me a character named Bria in the new Rogue One movie and I will consider Rebel Dawn canon. Truth be told, if Han could be an imperial who freed Chewy from slavery then I would be happy with what Disney has done with the character I grew up with.

And then there is the one we are all waiting to be canonized, the Thrawn Trilogy. As far as we know, Han and Leia only had one kid and his name was Ben. At the end of the Thrawn Trilogy they have one kid named Jacen. So already we have contradictions but that doesn't mean our favorite parts of the story are ruined for us. Rumor has it Thrawn will be a character in the Star Wars Rebel series which gives us some hope. Unfortunately, I feel like the Thrawn Trilogy is just legend until we can have some hard evidence that it happened.)

All books that take place 30 years after Endor have been nuked by the newest movie in my opinion. So it is with the heaviest of heart that I declare Cade Skywalker no longer Canon.

What stories do you think are still acceptably canon? Are there any stories you think are no longer canon?

For the most part, everything released after April 25, 2014 is canon and everything before is not. There are some exceptions here and there (such as TV shows and movies), but that date holds true for the most part.

But think of it like the marvel cinematic universe and the comic universe. Just because the movie timeline isn't following the comics doesn't make any of the MCU movies any less enjoyable. Same thing with star wars. Disney has free reign to selectively canonize anything that they want to build the universe, pulling on the best of the EU.

I get that. I was just thinking what legends could still easily be canon.

I honestly can't see why people love Thrawn so much. He was a terrible Admiral. I read a fan-fic years ago with a Grand Admiral who came back quietly, began trading with the crime cartels to set up an underground exchange rate for Imperial currency versus Republic credits. He used trickery and illusion to convince the Corporate Sector he had new ship killing missiles on hyperdrive equipped TIE's to bring them back into the fold. He stole Republic shipyard facilities, hiding the theft by destroying a substantial amount of what was left. Then used those to build a modified SSD in a nebula. He used secondary market X-Wings piloted by his own people to convince neutral worlds the Republic was staging fake piracy attacks on them just to come to their rescue as a means of getting them to join. He attacked on so many fronts at once. It was awesome . Even at the end of the fiction, they didn't beat him. He'd suckered enough of the Republic fleet into an ambush that he crippled them and it was essentially done. They threw everything they could muster into a last attempt to hold him back, and he was crushing them. A side character showed up with an unexpected fleet and joined the battle, but it still wasn't going to be enough to win. Then all of a sudden, he ordered his forces to withdraw. His own troops were confused since they clearly still had the upper hand. He replied that yes, they had more than enough to win war, but the new arrivals had inflicted enough losses that they'd never keep the peace. So he withdrew rather than throw away lives on both sides, and went back to where he'd come from to rebuild.

And he did everything through a network of intermediaries. No one knew the Empire was back in force until he lured them into the first trap and wiped out over a third of the New Rebuplic Navy.

There is no way Rogue Squadron is still canon, with how they have portrayed the formation of the New Republic and decline of the Empire.

Han rescuing Chewie is canon, according to Wookieepedia.

Much of the EU, in terms of character names, etc (sometimes bits of backstory), is still in the Holocron - and being drawn on and canonized.

Even where it contradicts "early G-canon" like radio plays, novelizations, etc.

So "guy who tries to start a fight with Luke" in ANH still has his EU name and backstory (Dr Cornelius Evazan, mad scientist) not his ANH radio play name and backstory (Roofoo, small-time punk).

Your on the right track, in interviews people making the stories have said basically everything is still canon, it just the fine details that may become non-canon. And since few post ROTJ stuff is written for in-between ep 6 and 7, these few things that can clash with said fine details. Also going by whats written for latter events Rogue Squadron can still happen not only because of what was written by the authors in interviews, but the lore itself. The Main Imps that are the first order retreated, it makes a point in lore to show there also break away Imperials, just like in legends, are running around and even have conflicts with the original imps.

Link ples.

Star Wars Aftermath implies the dissolution of the empire shown in the Xwing Novels was vastly accelerated- so much that Aftermath itself could be considrered a fresh take on the Wraith Squadron books, despite happening far sooner and with different characters.

Commander Thrawn is rumored to be a Rebels villian in season 3, and Aftermath has a mysterius "Fleet Admiral" in the epilogue who strongly implies being thrawn. He could concevable promote himself to Grand Admiral, fight the new republic, and eventually be defeated at Jakku instead of Bilbring.

We have Poe Dameron's comic coming out soon to replace the old X-wing series.

They can take a lot of the old Legends and make them canon, but I think they will probably tweak anything that they do at least a little bit. So, we aren't sure if they will tweak anything or not. Overall, I'm sure the bones of all the old stuff is still going to be there.

really wish rogue one was about rogue one.... ^_^

Its implied that he may have orchestrated Jakku

I always considered the EU to be the main part of the Star Wars universe. It was far larger than what we were given in the films. Now that they have thrown it out none of it is canon even if there is nothing contradicting it in any of the new films, books or cartoons yet. They do seem to be stealing bits from the EU though. The Ben character is lifted wholesale from the New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force series, just given a different name.

That kind of "lifted plot thread" doesn't really seem like a good example of a recanonization though. Kylo isn't really much like Caedus when examined in detail.

What I like seeing are proper recanonizations.

It really all depends on the following question being answered.

Is the EU non-canon unless included in a canon source, or is the EU canon unless contradicted by a canon source.

Right now there is no official answer for that, just different interpretations on what was said. Myself I lean to the EU being non-canon unless made canon.

Well, we know what is canon, therefore what isn't on the list isn't canon.

Ben?? Where?!?!

Kylo Ren is not Ben if that's what you're referring too. Kylo is very clearly a temper-tantrum Jacen. I cringed a lot when I heard Ben Solo on screen.
