What´s the verdict on Gonk?

By Sixter, in X-Wing

Gonk seems like a really nice crew member for only 2 points. Yes, it does take an action to load shields on the card and another to recharge the actual shields on your ship. I figure it should be easy enough to slow play in the beginning so you have at least 2 shields ready on the Gonk card when the actual game begins.

Gonk seems like a really strong late-game card because you give yourself an excellent chance to reclaim full points for your big base ship instead of possibly conceding half the points. Just the presence of Gonk might influence how your opponent is forced to play his endgame, so he might be forced to chase instead of flee for example.

Rebels have proven the might of regeneration. Will Gonk become a key upgrade for Scum?

In most cases simple Actions like focus or TL work better than an action crew, consuming two actions per 1 shield.

The combo I've been using is Gonk + Experimental Interface + Wired. That fits on anything with a Crew and EPT; Firesprays, Jumpmasters, HWKs, YV-666, and G-1As. The YV and HWK are questionable because they only have 1 Agility or 1 Shield. The G-1A has 1 Agility, but you can augment it with an Evade token and even Sensor Jammer. The Jumpmaster and Firespray each have a bunch of shields and total health, plus the Firespray can Evade.

My favorite so far has been on Kath with a Heavy Laser Cannon. She's always throwing at least 4 dice with re-rolls, and after storing a few shields she can Evade + regenerate every turn (plus the Wired re-rolls on defense). A lot of fun. I want to try it on 4-LOM next since he can also foist the stress off onto a hapless victim.

I used Gonk on Dengar in a store Championship at Common Ground Games. Slow playing at the start I built up a few shields, in the end game regaining the shields back to more than half is great. R5-P8 on the other hand was doing me damage half the time.

Gonk is a donk.

Seen the rebel regen? yeah, you can have it as well! But you know, rebel's one works without costing you action economy, but takes up DOUBLE that

the verdict from me is that everytime I hear GONK! I think of some strange alternate universe Pinky who's replaced NARF! with the droid

Other than my buddy constantly calling it "Gronk" as in, Gronkowski, it's great. Gonk + Experimental Interface, a combo you can trust. Add Wired (as above) for more shenanigans.

Is the Gronk droid accused of deflating shots?

I think it is an amazing upgrade. I like it most on Firesprays because they hit and run naturally because of the aux arc, and can combine that with 2 bombs. The JM5K is also an amazing choice because the other upgrade slots can give you amazing action economy anyway.

Gonk + Experimental Interface is a delight, lemme tell you.

I'm kind of thinking Gonk + Exp Int on 4-LOM just to be annoying up close.

Used Gonk on Palob with Mindlink. Ended up making finals with him at a SC yesterday. Very good upgrade that kept him alive far longer than he should have when under fire. Was almost always able to get 3-4 shields on him at the start.

Honestly, the game I used on dengar, he regenated 3 shields over the game. That's more then enough to warrant 2 points and a few actions that weren't going to be used any how.

I ran a Slaver with Bossk/Gunner/Gonk/EU today. Slow rolled early racking up shields on Gonk. Since he never really needed to do any actions since Bossk/Gunner had offense covered he could use it to recover a shield. Tempted to try EI instead of EU but I did find the boost useful a handful of times in the match.

Not as good as R2-D2 for the verdict. Taking 2 turns of actions to regen a shield is really slow. You will have to find ways to bank shield tokens then when under fire feed them back to the pilot card. hopefully you will have enough to survive the onslaught but if it is not going well you won't have the opportunity to restock the tokens on gonk.

Gonk is decent but not amazing.

True, but R2-D2 doesn't work very well (*cough*at all*cough*) with a Scum build...

...or when you need to do a white or red maneuver, for that matter.

Shhh you are being too logical you guys, R2-D2 for president! He does no wrong, has no draw backs, and doesn't cost twice the price!

Regardless of if is use shouldn't a Gnk droid be used by all sides. It is after all a Gnk.

So, on Gonk's card there are two separate actions available.

Does that mean you can use PTL and then use both actions in a turn to get a shield?

PTL doesn't let you use card actions, just action bar actions. Experimental Interface however........

Oh, I see that now. Awesomesaucey.

I guess I gotta put that YT-2400 on my list. So much to buy....
