Weird locations to play a game

By Hexdot, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I have some relatives involved in the comercial pilot career. Yesterday I talked with a relative via Skype who is copilot in a long range Airbus 380, and told me that while on flight and when taking some time to relax, take a nap, or the like, sometimes he play a quick MTG play... 30.000 feet above the surface.

And when I was in the military I played too some MTG and RPG plays while guarding an ammo dump. The most boring job in the world...

I play X-Wing and some other games on my lunch break at work. Not as exciting as on a plane or whilst guarding ammo.

I have played Battletech in an Airplane, single mapsheet and single mech each, not enough room for more than that. I also have played Battletech in the sands of Kuwait, and the Swamps of Georgia. I have played D&D in an airplane, in Korea, Kuwait, Georgia. Typically in the field, aka camping for the military. I have played 40k outside on a beach. That is about every location I've been to that I've played a game.

I once made a little hombrew Aliens strategy game. There were marines, corporate mercs and xenomorphs (controlled by some dice rolls). The marine APCs were about the length of my little fingernail, and the whole "battlefield" was magnetized to the inside of a biscuit tin lid, and the rules and dice stored easily in the tin.

Despite the effort to make it I only played it rarely with two other players, mostly on trains, once on a bus, once from the top of a castle battlements during a reenactment. TBH my rules were pretty bad, addapted from some free ones I found on the net.

Beware combining miniatures games and Taco Bueno. My wife and I tried that once, and when a Wasp stackpoled, the fire department got called.
