I'm super tired, but I'm going to try and remember as much as I can before I forget everything.
The list I flew:
Whisper, ACD+VI+Kallus+FCS
Inquisitor, VI+Title+Autothrusters
Omicron, Palp
99 points.
I started the list playing Whisper. This was my first 100 point tournament, but I've played in some other tournament types and I've always done well with Phantoms so I felt I had to play one here. I like the Palpmobile, and with the Tie Adv Prototype coming out I had the ability to fly Whisper with Palp.
I flew the Tie Adv Prototype 4 times last night and liked it, so the list was confirmed.
I'm terrible at names so I'm sorry if I forgot yours.
Game One: Ghost + Dash
He had a PS3 Ghost and Dash decked out. I eased my ships toward the middle of the board, then jumped to try to close the gap with Dash and get in the donut. He flew Dash a little too fast but by the time he realized it it was too late. I did bump Whisper into The Inquisitor and lost her to a surprise Ghost 5k (which I totally forgot existed) but it was after I tore Dash to one with the Prototype right behind him. Palpmobile managed to turn around and get back into the fight, and he and the Inquisitor took the ghost off the board, but he did get half the shuttle.
1-0
Game Two: IG88B+TLT Y-Wings
We got into a scrum in the middle of the board, I forgot Palp the first two turns but he dialed up a segnors when he had stress. I parked his IG on a rock and Whisper was behind him and cleaned him up, then she chased the TLTs around and killed them. I think I lost the Inquisitor but I actually remember very little about this game.
2-0
Game Three: Delta Defenders x3
He was running them with Twin Ion Mk2, two of them had Ion and one had a T-beam. Kallus named the T-beam. Whisper hid behind a rock early, he rolled poorly and I rolled great. Not a whole lot to say, there were a bunch of 4k turns but Whisper was too crafty for PS1 defenders. Dice and dodging won me the round.
3-0
Game Four: 3 TLT Y-wing + Z with Feedback Array
I name the closest Y with Kallus, medium-roll up to the center of the board. Inquisitor gets a great range 3 shot in but loses his shields for it. I sneak him up behind a rock and flank with Whisper. Feedback array surprises me for some reason. The critical moment comes when I'm able to sneak a barrel roll away from the array, into R1 of two of his TLTs, and blow the third up. Now Whisper is behind the TLTs and cleans up, and I think The Inquisitor once again sacrifices himself for the good of the Empire
4-0
Game Five: Brobots with Mangler, Seismic Charges, Glitterstim, Tractor Beam, Crackshot, Autothrusters
My opening I did something a little different and paid for it, the shuttle didn't get into the mix fast enough. I was doing okay though until I tried to be smart and thought he'd go long with his brobot and turned the wrong way with Whisper, losing her while he still had both bots. That one bad play pretty much was the game, and I took my first loss.
4-1
Right before round 6 (the final round) I take a look at the standings and see that I'm in 4th! My opponent is in third on MOV, and I'm reasonably sure we can ID into the Top 8. I offer it to him and after some initial confusion as to how it works he accepts. We actually go across the street to the pub and grab some dinner, he had taken a picture of the standings and we actually mathed out that we were indeed guaranteed to be in, and he said that now he understands how it works he would have accepted right away.
4-1-1
We end up 4th (him) and 5th (me) and have to play in the quarterfinals anyway!
Quarterfinals: Stresshog, TLT, Z, Poe with VI and thrusters and R2D2
Apparently the dinner did me zero good, as I fly Whisper right into a debris cloud and into the teeth of the stresshog. I proceed to have the hottest green dice of my life and then blow up the stresshog. Whisper kills the other Y with some Palp help, and the Z dies to The Inquisitor. I did manage to fly the Palp shuttle into a debris field and bump Whisper leaving me no option but to eventually end up flying off the board. This has been a combination of the worst flying I'd done coupled with some of the best green dice ever. Karma comes back to eat me though, Whisper eats a crit at no shields from Poe and flips a Direct Hit. Palp flies off the board, and now its The Inquisitor vs Poe, which I'm probably going to lose. He decides to 4k turn though, and Poe lands just barely off the board with the corner of his base. I didn't deserve it, but I'll take it.
Quarterfinals Win (sort of)
Finals: Brobots (Again)
Same guy I lost to, pretty much the same rock setup (big field on his side of the board). This time I get the Palp shuttle into the mix a little faster and the Inquisitor takes a better line. I swing Whisper along my starting edge, and he goes to joust her. Decent green rolls and Palp keep her alive, but she loses two shields. In pretty much the same place as I made my Whisper mistake the first time I played him I manage to play it right, bumping one IG and stay out of arc of the other. We fight down in the corner of the board that I set up in, but his greens are pretty hot and my Inquisitor is rolling cold. I eventually burn one IG down to 3 hull and try chasing it around the board, getting it to two while he finishes off the Inquisitor. In probably some of the best flying I'd done ever I manage to take the Lambda through the middle of the asteroid field without landing on any rocks. Its a grueling game, I need to take the last shield off the other IG to get the points or kill the first IG, but time is called one point away from winning. Probably the best game of X-Wing I've played, very close. There were a couple close calls that I probably could have done better, and I had forgotten Kallus this game which may have mattered (but actually I don't think so).
Semifinals Loss.
In the end, I think I'd rather play Intelligence Agent on Whisper than Kallus. Partially because I often seem to forget Kallus, but also the Intelligence Agent is something that would have helped me more often in those knife fights.
Overall a great tournament. I'm always really pleased with the community when I head out to play and I really should leave my basement more often.
