Returning to Closed Location

By mgatesy42, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Can anyone tell me what happens when an investigator who is in another world returns through a gate to a location in Arkham that is closed? This happened during a game recently when the Mythos card closed the Science Building for one turn and I returned to that location during that turn.

I could not find anything in the rules about this. I would guess that the investigator remains at that location, but otherwise the turn proceeds as normal. This would seem logical, as the location is closed, so the investigator cannot leave, and there is no one there force the investigator to leave. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks.

Clearly you didn't look hard enough lengua.gif .

"Q: What happens to a monster that emerges from a gate
that appears at a closed location? Or if a location closes
while there is a monster and a gate at the location? Is the
monster trapped inside the closed location?
A: The gate replaces the location, so while the gate is open
there is no closed location for the monster to be “trapped”
in. Put the gate over the closed marker. If the gate is later
closed, then resolve the effects of a closed location – i.e.,
any monster or investigator at the location that appeared
with the gate is tossed out into the street." (FAQ, p. 4)

*You enter the gate while the university is open*

*Guards close the university for the night*

*You come out and close the gate, guard comes in to see what the noise is about*

Guard: Hey, what're ye doin' 'ere, this uni's closed!

You: I was closing an other worldly gate, sir

Guard: You've been having too much whisky, now get out, out, OUT!

If the gate replaces the location, does that mean that Mythos cards that send monsters in locations back into the cup do not affect monsters guarding portals?

No, they are still affected. After all, even though the Woods has been replaced by a gate, it is still part of the Uptown neighborhood.

The whole concept of "gate replaces a location" was fundamentally good, but it causes confusion. For example, if there is a gate at Independence Square, and the Mythos card shows that a gate is supposed to open at Independence Square, you don't simply ignore it because Independence Square does not exist anymore: there is a monster surge. Similarly, the Manhunt in Arkham mythos card would still remove monsters from locations with gates, because they are still locations.

It's best when you realize that this is only relevant really for having encounters, locations that are closed (as described above), and fulfilling Tasks/Missions/Personal Stories. An investigator the Graveyard who has Necrophobia wouldn't lose sanity if there's a gate on the Graveyard. However, one with Claustophobia would: a location with a gate is still a location, after all.

Am I right on these? Are there other examples that should be mentioned?

Thanks for the answer, that's exactly the way we played it, so I agree with you.
