Can you come up with a way to generate more focus in a single turn?

Sorry, but your list highlights why Attanni Mindlink is practically dead on arrival.

The card cleary states you can only give a ship a token "if it does not already have one."

You can't stack multiple focus, or multiple stress.

Mindlink is far from DOA. You just have to come up with a better list for it.

I don't think an entire list of it is a great idea. However, I do like a pair of:

Gand Findsman 25

-Attani Mindlink 1

-Electronic Baffle 1

-Outlaw Tech 2

Nice and easy. Even on the turn they take a red maneuver they can both end up with 2 focus (judicious use of baffle required). Should be pretty strong.

Doh, better read the card beforehand playing with it when I cant sleep.

Fair enough. I might be exaggerating when I call it DOA ... but it would have been more useful if it allowed stacking multiple focus.

Only the Moldy Crow would get to keep the focus tokens at the end of the combat phase, but the ability to let multiple ships stack focus leading into the combat phase would have awesome offensive and defensive uses.

Rather than deny focus stacking or make this upgrade share stress, I would have designed this card differently:

Attanni Mindlink

Scum Only.

Each time you perform a focus action, each other friendly ship with Attanni Mindlink must also be assigned a token. During the next activation phase each friendly ship with Attanni Mindlink cannot perform focus actions during its perform action step.

This would allow you to stack multiple focus tokens (if each ship with Mindlink picks focus as its action) for one activation/combat phase, but the penalty is that all your ships with Attanni Mindlink will be unable to focus during the next round of actions.

If the upgrade was designed this way it would have been much easier (and appealing) to put this into scum lists to boost offense/defense for one round of combat ... and it would severely reduce the defensive/offensive abilities of many scum ships for the next round of combat.

As it is now, there are very few ships that I would consider running with Attanni Mindlink ... and I doubt I'd actually run this upgrade on any of them because the first time one of my ships with low pilot skill performs a red maneuver they will potentially deny actions to my high pilot skill ships.

Worse still, imagine if I let a low PS ship perform a red maneuver (giving stress to my other ships) and I forget about the stress sharing and assign a red maneuver to my high PS ship ... according to the rules my opponent then gets to chose my maneuver and he/she can move my ace into the perfect position to be killed.

Attanni Mindlink is a high-risk, low-reward upgrade at the moment. It should be a Zero-point upgrade the way it currently works.

You're just not thinking far enough outside the box.

  • If Palob starts combat within range 1-2 of an enemy with a focus token, he steals not only one for himself but for everyone with Mindlink.
  • If Kaa'to Leeachos starts combat within range 1-2 of an ally with a focus token, he steals not only one for himself but for everyone with Mindlink. Possibly including whomever he just stole it from.
  • If Manaroo passes a focus to one ally with Mindlink, she passes it to everyone with Mindlink. Possibly including herself.
  • If Guri starts combat within range 1 of an enemy, she picks up not only a focus for herself but for everyone with Mindlink.
  • If anyone with Mindlink is stressed, they can still receive focus tokens through the Mindlink.
  • Guri, Kaa'to, and Palob can all still generate focus while stressed.
  • Plan your moves carefully, and yes, the first red maneuver will stress all Mindlinked ships, but each of those ships that then does a green maneuver will clear it immediately and be free to perform an action. How about a focus to pass back to the ship that just did a red?
  • If a Mindlinked ship is already stressed, it doesn't care if another does a red move, it won't gain additional stress.
  • Other pilots, like 4-LOM, can even turn the stress into a weapon.

I had a really good list somewhere that incorporated multiple of these, but I can't seem to find it. I do know that it included the Moldy Crow title on Palob so he could have a few foci stored up for Kaa'to to steal even if everyone was stressed.

I'd've made all the mindlinks in a squad together cost 1 point, though how you write that I don't know. That would seem about right for its current wording.

Or made it so that it worked to remove stress as well as put it on - so one person could take a green and everyone would clear a stress. That might make it actually usable at its current price and opportunity cost - maybe it would have to go up to 2 points, but that would be a bit dear.

Mindlink just feels a little too limited in its current form to be worth taking. You'd be better off in many if not most cases just taking Crack Shot.
