Duplicate material, what to keep and what to toss?

By Metal Mech, in X-Wing

Ok so right now I have 17 ships, with 8 more on the way. I already have a crap ton of tokens. I am a bit OCD, and like to collect at least one of everything, but having a bunch of extra stuff I am not going to use bugs me as well.

So the point is, what do I keep as far a duplicates and what can I get rid of? For starters I am guessing I can keep one of each of those "Rule Cards" and dump the duplicates. The number tokens that go on the flight stands, do I really need more then two? Same for the other tokens. Starting to get way more then I think I could even use in a Epic game. Is there a certain number I should keep? Should I keep a certain number in my gaming supplies then bag and store the rest in case I wear the others out? Would I just be better off replacing them with a certain number of plastic tokens and dumping the cardboard ones all together?

Just working on trying to get my stuff organized and this is what my current thought process is at the moment.

Keep everything. Put in a Ziploc bag and put on top of fridge.

I recently organized a second batch of all the normal tokens and templates and range rulers and a damage deck into a core box and left it at the play space at home. This way if I have a game at home all I need to do is pack the ships. And all my travel normal Templates and tokens are all ready to go in the travel case already.

As Leonidas would say. "Throw away nothing! But keep from them everything!"

I have my standard bag of stuff, as I always offer to be able to run new players through a complete squad, but I too have a huge pile of duplicate stuff. It's all in a banker box on the top of my game shelf, all neatly sorted in the zip bags they come with, so if I want to sell/trade anything I can easily give back the exact bag of bits that a ship should come with.

A "go bag" for X-Wing games?

I love it!

My "go bag" is my home bag as well, one of the foam trays is simply filled with all the stuff need. I grab that Feldherr bag and I am ready to go. ;-)

I personally do not expect more than 12 ships on the table (4 for each player, if you´ve got two people to play with). So I kept 12 stands and two pegs for each. Then, just as you said, I kept 3 out of each rule card. Then I estimated a number of shield, evade and other tokens, kept them and threw everything else (including mission tokens) in a plastic bag.

I am also kinda crazy, so I tend to keep all my games in their core set boxes and this is a way how to do it. And no, I didn´t put my Falcon and Firespray into the core set box :) I keep them in a YT-1300 box together with all their stands, pegs, pilot cards and needed tokens.

By the way, just count how many copies of the same ship you have (3 tie fighters, 3 interceptors, for example). So, you will need number tokens just to distinguish between those 6 ships. Then, throw the rest of the number tokens into the bag of oblivion :)

I expect to field a lot more than that for Epic games... even if they are few and far between. Besides, I sometimes like taking photos of the entire fleet and 12 simply will not do! I keep it all. Some of the tokens that won't fit in my plano boxes go in the latest core set I have along with the 3rd set of cardboard templates. But get rid of anything? I might give something to a younger player that cannot afford to play but is deserving of being able to... along with the tools to do so, but I cannot see me throwing it away carelessly.

As my collection has grown I've stopped punching out all the replicated tokens. I only punch the ship plates and dials now, leaving the rest still in the card. Easy storage and easy to round up if I trade or sell something.

I took out unnecessary duplicates (unique pilots and upgrades) and excess cards, rules cards, tokens etc and put them in a box. If any of my friends get into the game they're welcome to them.

I keep all tokens on hand (I have a big tackle box) but only use my acrylics that I won. But anytime someone needs 20 more stress tokens for their stress hog I got em.

As far as the numbers go, I kept all of mine but I would make a separate batch (numbers 1-9 for example) for anytime you're feeling swarmy but don't want 23, 45 and 16 in the same squad.

Things get lost, broken or unusable. After a lot of use the cardboard tokens may wear, always pays to have spares.

And yes, this is how you start out to become an X Wing hoarder.
