At this point in the game's life cycle, virtually everything.
I'm still really new and I rather like the two ship packs (most wanted, rebel and imperial aces), as you seem to get a lot of decent upgrades. Rebel Aces and, later, an A-Wing and a B-wing gives you a fairly adaptable rebel fleet.
I have been somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer choice of ships. Playing casually means that none of them have gone unflown. Essentially, buy the ships that you love the most and give them a go.
Jumpmaster good for scum starter.
Most Wanted for Ys and Zs.
Kwing for Rebels, TLT card.
Y wing.
Decimator!!!
Shuttle
And soon the Defender.
Luke with BB8 and Poe with R2D2 would be my first Idea.
Poe with BB8 and Biggs/R2D2 might work too.
Elites are then a question if you share those cards as well and how to split them. etc
edit:
Well and for building your squad up with additional expansions: The Ace Expansions are a great start. After that? Literally everything and nothing. There are tons of awesome lists around, checking the streams of last worlds might give you an idea what you want to play. Deciding what ships you love and then looking how to use them into great list would work as well, etc
Oh and using proxies can be fine as well, depends in what environment you want to play, etc
Edited by SEApocalypseI started recently too. I´d say get a Falcon! It has the iconic look and some great pilots and cards (especially veteran instincts) and lets people you show the game to fly a relatively easy ship.
Welcome to the prack addiction.
I'm relatively new, the best advice I was given was just buy the ships that look cool and you think you'll have fun with. You can worry about the other stuff later.

Though the outrider is **** cool as well and it comes with Lando, can ignore obstacles and that sweet Heavy Laser Cannon … ;-)
But yeah, eventually you will get a falcon as alliance player, even it it is just for the engine upgrade and veteran instincts.
In many regards this game works best if you get "one of each" anyway.
ohhhhh to go back to day one the joy and obsession of learning it all
Enjoy and have fun
The most recent releases are usually the ones requiring the fewest additional cards to be competitive. That said, Rebel Aces is a very strong pack. If you're interested in Scum, Most Wanted and Punishing One are worth picking up. Empire is the faction FFG has struggled the most with, so the cards you'll want as an Empire player are spread all over the place (for example, if you want to play Soontir Fel you need to pick up the Interceptor, Imperial Aces and the Starviper). However, the upcoming Imperial Veterans pack is very strong, and the TIE Adv. Prototype seems very playable right out of the box.
Which factions do you like, and what ships appeal to you?
Edited by OkapiCongratulations and condolences. A nice game but one that may be murder on your pocket book if you want/try to "keep up" with everything that is possible.
There are no easy answers to that question anymore
Once upon a time the easy answer to what works well with two cores would have been the Falcon but now there are just so many more possibilities that is really depends on what you want to try doing. Another word of caution is that even if you want to stick to "one faction" you will often find that upgrades you want are only available to ships in other factions so most people will end up with ships of all types.
Welcome to the neverending crack addiction buddy!
The aces packs are great (as well as additional starter sets to get more dice, templates, and ships for cheap) but at the end of the day just buy what you like. There are an infinite number of 'good' squads and yes some ships and cards are more competitive than others but what will make the best squad and provide the most fun is one with ships you think look cool.
Plus at 15 bucks for most ships it's not that pricy to try a few out and see what you think.

One good place to at least reduce that problem is to trade some cards or just downright share them. Just like the OP did with the starter packs. Just a third player is missing for scum, to keep that gold old "one of each" up and make getting into the game cheap and keep it that way.
Good advice by everyone. And they all have more experience than I. Like the OP I too have only 1 of each Core Set. Although the Aces packs are frequently recommended, I have a slightly different strategy. I plan on buying 1 T-70 X wing Expansion Pack and 1 TIE/fo Expansion Pack. This will give me enough for very basic and less than ideal 100pt. lists for both Imp and Reb. I absolutely love Scum but am holding off to get at least a couple full lists flying before jumping into another faction. When I do though, I plan on at least 1 Most Wanted being the entry point.
One other point: Once you get to the point when you are thinking about specific pilots or upgrade cards, the http://xwing-miniatures.wikia.com/wiki/X-Wing_Miniatures_Wiki lists exactly what upgrades come with which ships.
Good Luck. Try not to be in a big hurry to buy more and more stuff. Fly what you have, and upgrade when the time feels right.
The community where I live is a good size and plus theres another thats a 45 minute drive away. Im looking at the Rebel only since its what I play in armada. Also I plan on getting the Falcon, Outrider and Rebel Aces. I want a squad with a bulky guy, maneuverable and then someone who can kind of do it all. I had tried empire and they just did not fit my style. And thanks everyone for the great advice! I'm glad to be a part of this community now!

If you buy both aces expansions you are definitely a lot better off and can aswell build 100pts squads without problems. Well, technical even just the TFA core and both ace packs are already 100 pts squads for both sides. You basically buy the old core just for R2D2 and nothing else. And I am not saying that this is wrong, but it is clearly not money effective. It is still nice to have, especially as TIE/ln swarm is still good.
If you're on a budget. Both aces pack are a good starting place after the core to get some recognizable ships and good upgrades for cheap

Can't argue with that option either. I originally purchased the TFA Core to try the game. Since I will be providing all the components for my casual games with family and friends, I decided the 2nd Core was the way to go. I decided Orig. Core for R2D2, Biggs, and the simple fact of less redundancy. I chose the X-pak route because of IA and the fact that I like almost ALL the TIE/fo pilots.
To me it sounded like the OP has decided to fly Rebs. With one T-65 and one T-70 already in the hangar, 1 additional T-70 even at full retail is only $15.00 and enough to fly with. Especially because it provided the all important IA for the T-65. Not to mention tanky Red Ace and/or Ello. Obviously everyone has different situations, and my purchase strategy may not be the best for everyone.
Edited by EyegorThrow out the X-Wing (they suck atm), grab yourself one of the nice big ships like the Falcon or the new Ghost, as they'll give you enough to make a full 100pt Squad with what you currently have, and contain a bunch of nice cards for the other ships.

Xwings are great! Especially in casual fun games! I love running Wedge and Wes.
Starting out, like everyone here said, go for the Aces Expansions. Rebel Aces have two of my favorite pilots in Nera and Jake, plus the crew cards of Jan Ors and Katarn are sweet.
YT-2400 is awesome. Fun, competitive, and great upgrade cards: Heavy Laser Cannons, Proton Rockets, Experimental Interface, Gunner, Lone Wolf, Lando, Stay on Target
K-Wing is a must, not only a fun badass ship, but comes with two TLTs.
The Falcon is cool, but not necessary. Best thing about it is Veteran Instincts and Engine Upgrades. Fun in casual games I guess, but I dont really fly mine anymore and I have only been in this game for 4 months. But if I ever show this game to people, it's the first ship I pull out since it is so iconic. It looks badass and is an attention grabber.
Proxy cards until you find out what works and what doesnt. I ordered Leebo off Ebay for like $2, haha. Thought it was a cool card until I learned Ion tokens dont go away after the round is over. So definately proxy before investing in the real cards.
Have fun!
I know that the Scum faction is still being filled out and I would suggest Not investing in them to begin with. ( I know Someone will have to disagree! ) They are all fun and eventually get them all if you must. I have collected them all and as a life long gamer am quite happy with this game. I don't play the huge ships but they have some great cards in them for normal play. The Imperial Raider adds some much needed firepower to the Tie Advanced. It's a great game and The huge make for some nice overpriced obstacles... lol.. Just have fun with it..

Yeah at this point buy what you like and stay the bleeps away from tournaments.

I just bought into X-wing three weeks ago. I bought two of the regular core sets, rebel aces, imperial aces, the falcon and slave 1. Armada is taking forever to release stuff so I decided to spend my armada fund on X wing and it's pretty good and luckily it's different enough from armada that it doesn't feel like I've already played it. I am picking up the new ships tomorrow along with the outrider and all the scum ships including most wanted.
Buy what you like. Fly what you have. My wife is a TIE swarm player with a tremendous win:loss record at the few casuals she can make. Me, I get my butt kicked more regularly flying a range of new toys. Latest is a Kwing ace and three Xwings, because I think it's fun.
