They won't. 400 is clearly what they're balancing the game upon, but just because the book says something doesn't mean it can't change.

I think the game balance would be mostly the same at 500 points.

And I would not be surprised if the secret final goal is 600 points after a few waves. But well ... thats just me.

I think for me, 500 would be about right...

I hope they do increase the points down the line. I can house rule anything but it just doesn't feel right to me to play the game at something that isn't tournament legal.

If I communicated that wrong, I apologize for the confusion. I would never dream of playing on the entire mate. The mates have 6" sides for each player for holding ship cards, upgrades, defense tokens, etc.

I do have and play on a 4'x6' mat. My buddies table doesn't let us use 6" of that but 600 pt games work really well on it. By turn 5 it's down to the mop up, and having the extra maneuver room is cool. Victories getting up to speed 2 and staying there because there's room.

Well I heard from a man down the pub who knows a guy whos knows this plumber who does really good work for next to nothing, he said the merchant he buys his showers from knows a fella who said it was going to be 500 points.............

I guess my point is to play what you like. Playing with the one friend of mine will probably be 600pts on a 6'x4' map. From experience the game dynamics hold up, plus the battles look really cool with all that stuff on the table. I just got a vehicle so I can start playing at a local game shop. I'll probably have to go back to 400pts and a standard map to start with there, but I think they'll come around.

As far as tournament play go's I'd have trouble caring less. I play for the fun of the game and don't mind losing if I had a good game. Looking at my local game shops websight The buy-in for their last tourney was $10. I know you can win cool stuff, but if it's not as fun I'd rather sit on the side and play pick-up games. I'm just not a competitive person I guess.

I don't have anything "official" but I think this is a given. They can't keep releasing new ships without increasing the points cap. People will want to play their new ships.

After 3+ years and 8 waves of X-Wing still being at 100 points... This is far from a given.

I may have read your remark wrong (foot in mouth lol). If you were addressing my comment that they can't keep releasing new ships and comparing that with X-Wing, let me clarify my basis why I think that's apples and hammers. X-Wing is all about the dog-fight. You can mix and match the exact fighters, but it's still all about the dog-fight (imo). I don't see players fielding full squadrons of every fighter released (heck, there's not enough room on the mat). It's more akin (imo) to the Lance combat dynamics of Battletech; it's meant to stay small.

But fleet combat? Heck, just compare the names: X-Wing (singular) vs Armada (a sizable fleet). Fleets made up of backbone warships, support ships, frigates, fast attack, etc. I don't get new ships to "upgrade" or "replace" the others, I get them to add to the build of the overall force while still breaking down into playable "task forces." I'd love to see an Endor size fleet campaign! But I don't know, that may just be me.

I'd love to see that too, but Armada isn't the game that could do it. The ships are too large to properly recreate a battle that large.

Frankly the name of the game is a bit misleading, Armada was never about Fleet sized battles, it was always going to be about 1-3 VSD or bigger ships with some smaller supports and fighters. It was never designed with 6+ ISD's and all their support ships in mind. That is something that is very unlikely to change, especially given FFG's statement about the points staying at 400. Armada is a Skirmish game at it's core, just one with cap ships.

The other thing and maybe this got mentioned, maybe not... FFG is big on Organized Play, tournaments and the like. They view this as important to the health of the game. As such they have to consider tournaments and the like, an increase in points would almost have to mean an increase in time, and right now Armada rounds are bordering on the too long. So they're unlikely to do anything that increases that.

All that said... Do what you want, plenty of people play 500+ sized games and if X-Wing is anything to go by the game is likely still well balanced even at larger point values.

I do not believe this will ever happen. And the reason being is Akbar.

I am not one of those people that think Akbar is too powerful. In fact in our tournament scene he has never won a tournament.

But look at what he does. He is balanced for 400 points. If you start increasing points and increasing ships, he becomes more and more powerful. Even more then the other commanders.

All the other commanders I feel stay about the same value no matter what points you play at, but Ackbar...

Could you imagine a 600 point fleet with 12 corvettes and akbar? That is potentially 24-48 extra dice every turn. No other commander increases in power like that.

The game is balanced at 400. If they ever increased the fleets they would have to adjust a lot of cards. Even flotillas since they give fleet wide benefits.

I'm actually fine with the size. But Fleet and more to the point Armada are terms people typically associate with a large number of ships. But you're right a fleet doesn't require X ships, and Armada is simply a fleet of warships.

A lot of people bought or at least looked at Armada expecting it to be a much larger game in terms of the number of ships per side. That isn't something FFG ever advertised or really even hinted at, but people see a game called Armada and I think are at least somewhat justified in thinking there would be more then 3-5 ships per side.

Star Wars: Task Force just does not have the same ring to it as Armada.

I think the point limit for Tourney is fine. As has been touched on by many, myself included, the Tourney point is irrelevant to what limit you choose to play on anywhere but in Tourney (and in prep for it). As far as not enough space for larger fleets, I suggest referencing "floorhammer." There is no reason one can't increase the size of the playing field (so long as you actually have the room). Simply set a limit of points per field, up to the total number of fields you can accommodate. I've seen 4 of the long tables pushed together with 8 players (4 per side) as task force commanders all taking part in a single massive engagement.

Long as you enjoy it, it's just time and money.
